Does this mean we're going to get a volume 13?

The manga now has 6 chapters that have not been collected into a volume yet and there isn't a conclusion yet. I thought the manga was planned to be only 12 volumes?

So what happened?

Maybe the last volume will be longer than the regular ones? Wouldn't be the first series to do that.

However, was there ever anything official about the "12 Volumes" thing anyway? It keeps getting thrown around every so often, but I don't remember any official note on this, so it might have just been an urban myth to begin with.

Well of course. Volume 11 ended with stage 76, and the latest stage is 84. That's 8 stages in a series that has averaged 7 stages per volume. The better question is when will we be getting volume 12? They could feasibly have published it any point in the last year.

Nothing really happened. Sadamoto is just really bad at being a manga-ka. Back in 2003, Carl Horn sat down with Sadamoto at Fanime. Sadamoto told him that it was planned to be 11 volumes. And I believe that was shifted to 12 at some point. But as it currently stands, there's stages up and into a 13th volume. I'm pessimistic about his ability to fit the rest of EoE into the next 7 stages (84-90). I'm betting on the series ending at 14 volumes (96-97 stages).

EDIT:

I did some fuzzy math, and with 8 stages (76-83), Sadamoto has managed to retell 33 minutes of the 86 minutes of EoE. So by that pace, he would need to do a total of 21 stages. The first two are in volume 11, which leaves 19 stages for 3 volumes (12-14).

Well, so much for that Spanish-translated interview from a few year's back where Sadamoto said his manga would be 13 volumes long (the same interview he mentioned his manga ending will be the EoE route).

*Asuka has a lance battle with an Eva and slits its throat*

Makoto: What's it look like outside?
Maya: Less than 1 minute until it deactivates. At this rate, Asuka will...

*Asuka slices an Eva in two*

Scene: Cage
Shinji: No way, this can't be happening. I made a promise with Misato to go
and save Asuka. I made a promise yet I can't move Eva...that's no good.
Move. Mother, move. Move, mother!!!
*Eva-01 activates, breaking out of the bakalite and crushing some nearby
soldiers*
Shinji: Mother...

Outro: Eva awakens! Shinji and Asuka's destiny is...

Guess next month will be a pretty big month for seeing how this is going to
play out with respect to instrumentality.

I laughed at that last part. "C'mon mother, I need to try to save Asuka only to be disappointed when she gets killed at the last second!" I totally see that happening. But I would rather be pleasantly surprised and see Sadamoto's version of EoE start to work through the sheets. Maybe something different happens besides Unit-01 spreading its wings and Asuka dying.

Shinji will likely get out to help but Asuka will still get it or something and it in turn triggers 3I.

Or perhaps we will have a 3I occur but with both Shinji and Asuka involved somehow instead of just Shinji triggering it.

Though wonder if it really was responding to Shinji's will since it activates to crush some soldiers which were probably no doubt a threat to Shinji.

Shinji though has less than a minute to get out to help which is not much time to get onboard eva and outside to do any good. Have a feeling hes still going to be too late with this time frame.

At least one of the usual sites has the recent stages, but they haven't been keeping up for a while. They only posted stage 82 today.

They are usually up at the Torrents section of THAT BOARD. Stage 83 in particular can already be found there.

Hmm, i'm starting to think that Sadamoto is trying to speed things up in regards to finishing the manga. He did state that he wants to be done with it before they start working on Rebuild 3.0. I'm certain that the stages corresponding to the second half of EoE will be drastically different from the movie version.

Looks like stage 84 will be doing Great Justice to Misato.

Has Ritsuko been shown confronting Gendo yet? I wonder when/how that will play out in realtion to everything else. Though I still think Shinji will arrive in time to actually see Asuka die.

And in terms of the manga-ending, instead of a Last B of sorts, I'm getting the feeling it will have a Shinji & Gendo slant to it, whether or not it's somewhat hopeful.

Not yet, but I believe that Ritsuko was last seen inside the Magi where she said she would see her mom soon.
