We don't really do final verdicts around here (shameless postmodern humanities students that we are). However, I believe the general consensus was that, while Asuka had not slit her wrists in #24', it was clear that suicide was her intent, or at the very least heavily on her mind. We have her words about being worthless, and her folded clothing. It's fairly clear what meaning is meant to be taken from the scene.

I personally thought that LCL was in that tub, but that's just me

The LCL idea is what comes closest to my theory. I think the tub is sort of a replacement-Entry Plug (a pretty dry and dirty one) because she isn't allowed to go back to the real on after she'd failed. I admit it's not so obvious but i like it better than the suicide idea. It could also be a reference to the scene in Episode 2 where Misato tells Shinji to take a bath (don't know what she says in the English Version but it gotta be something like "bathing cleanses body and soul")

Why in the world would it be LCL in the tub? It's not like that stuff is just lying around.

I haven't found any mention in the thread, but after seeing Ep 22' I wonder why nobody mentioned the connection because in Ep 24 Asuka has her very own Bath Tub (no need to share with Misato and Shinji).

I mean this scene for everyone who doesn't know which scene I mean. Could you please explain why she doesn't? I can't remeber a scene where Shinji or Misato uses the rusty Tub (which doesn't mean they couldn't but I kinda don't think so^^)

It was just plain resentment of Misato and Shinji. And there were scens of Shinji and Misato using at SEPERATE times.

The rusty tub isn't in Misato's apartment, it's in some random destroyed house in the part of Tokyo-3 that got wrecked when Rei self-destructed Unit 00. Either way it's not really "her" tub, she's just using it.

also, it's not uncommon for people in Japan to use the same bathwater (not emptying it for the next person) because of their almost anal "green" policies. Asuka is pulling a "fuck that noise, that's nasty and I'm a selfish western person."

Not quite, the water is heated by the bath and that takes quite a while so they all use the same water. And they shower before hand aswell.

That's part of it; I've met quite a few Japanese people who also do it to conserve water, my own family included.

Aren't confirmation of sorts awesome?! :boingy:

Some interesting information I noticed from Eva Mailing list.

Source where some other items of interest might be: http://lists.onegeek.org/pipermail/evangelion/2010-January/005738.html

Gwern Branwen on Eva Mailing (Protoculture Addicts #41 (July/August 1996) article transcripts) wrote:24. Nagisa, The Fifth Child

Asuka, nearly starved and dehydrated to death, is discovered by NERV agents and brought back to the headquarters.

Whether or not these are just how the article was written or Gainax themselves endorsing the summaries, it still supports the idea Asuka WAS indeed trying to commit suicide (and while it doesn't imply she slit her wrists, I guess this is a case of the means not matter compared to the fact she did try to die).

Also, the summary on Episode 25 and 26 supports the idea that Instrumentality was rejected. :kawaii:

I'd say that just describes her condition, not her intent.

It explains her condition at any rate. Interesting that Asuka would choose to pine away rather than make a quicker exit. Coupled with her please that she did not wish to die in #25', is she really trying to kill herself, or was death due to her condition merely something she not longer concerned herself with?

I always thought she was just at a point where she didn't care and didn't really mind to die.

its RUST, bloode doesnt stain, it floats, if it was blood, it would be more aparent that she scracthed the tub so hard with her nails that it bled, then a sharp object cut blood trail.
