ITT, your 5 favorite video games of all time and (if you feel like) a short reason why...

5) Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
My favorite out of the series, and definitely my favorite stealth game of all time (Along with MGS3). Also my first metal gear game, this game was one of the first games I played to have a deep, intriguing storyline that kept me playing and wondering what would happen next.

4) Final Fantasy X
My favorite final fantasy game, also my first like MGS2. For me this game had just about everything, a good (imo) storyline, good characters, and solid turn based gameplay. While rather linear, the game really opened up when all the side-quests became available, ensuring more play time after beating the main story. The sphere grid was rather fun to have as well, allowing for some variety in your characters later on.

3) Starcraft
The best RTS I've ever played, and one of the only games I have played rather regularly ten years after it came out. Also probably my first RTS game (I swear the trend ends here >.>). After having loads of fun with the campaign, the map editor, and custom games I soon learned the wonders battle.net and LAN play, which keeps me to this day at least occasionally playing a round or two.

2) Ocarina of Time
NOT my first Zelda game (The original I believe was my first). This game defined well-made, with amazing environments and graphics for its time, OOT holds many good memories with me, this is one of the few game's I've played through more than 2 or 3 times (though how many completed ones is probably 2 or 3). This game always had a permeating sense of mystery to, I always felt like there was something to explore out there.
This game holds a special place in my heart.

1) Mass Effect
The perfect blend between my two favorite things, shooting and leveling up. ME combines both the greatest elements of Bioware's RPGs and morality systems as well as a fun (if sometimes clunky) shooting and cover system. While the non-story worlds were often lacking the game really shine on its main worlds, where one of my favorite sci-fi stories is told. The cast is solid, with Saren, Anderson, and of course of Shepherd all having great voice actors. This game's story in my opninion was well thought out and well executed, with some of my favorite cut-scenes in any game. This is the only game I've beaten more than four times, and one where I remember each playthrough. My first was playing the game and experiencing the story, the second was doing the optional stuff, the third was going renegade, the fourth and fifth were beating the game on the two highest difficulties, and currently I have a sixth started, where I will make all the choices I want to follow over into mass effect 2.

Honorable Mentions: Devil May Cry 3, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Shadow of The Colossus.

I can't do a top 5. I just love a lot of the video games I own a lot. It's just hard to choose.

Well I'm not much of a gamer but I guess I'll take a wing at this.

1 - The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time - Out of all the games I've ever played this has always seemed the interesting in both gameplay and storyline. And its also one of the first games I've ever had for my N64.

2 - Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal - I've always been a Pokemon fan and the Gold/Silver series was my favorite out of all of them. Just the right amount of Pokemon and the awesomeness of going back to Kanto and kicking Team Rocket's ass all over again. :P

3 - Rush 2049 - The only racing game I've ever liked. Hell, I LOVED this game. Not only does it have racing, it's got battle mode and stunt mode. Plus trying to get all the coins that were hidden on the courses was a great challenge.

4 - Golden Sun I & II - Excellent RPG. Engaging story, nice job system and the Djinn summonings were always cool to watch.

I don't really have another favorite game...so let's go with...Kingdom Hearts! Square + Disney = win.

1) Tekken Tag Tournament
I think this game has to take the cake based solely on how much time I've played it, and how many copies of this game I've gone through. I think I've put more hours into this game than any other. I'm a huge fan of Tekken, and this is by far the more polished entry in the series.

2) Tetris
Short of Tekken Tag, I think I've played more Tetris than any other game. Considering how old the game is, and how much I still play it to this day, I'd be an idiot not to place it in my top five.

3) Metal Gear Solid
Like a favorite movie, I've played it, and replayed it, and replayed it. Sequel sucked though, what was up with that?

4) Armored Core (Series)
Armored Core is a game that my mother grew to hate. Specifically the Garage music that you hear almost constantly as you tweak and upgrade your AC. I really need to pick up Silent Line, Last Raven, Nine Breaker, Nexus, and For Answer. This is a series that I feel the need to have every single installment of, even if each subsequent game is just a little bit shinier.

5) Final Fantasy VIII
Yeah, go ahead, hate me, I liked Final Fantasy VIII more than VII. I also like Squall, and the story, and the junction and magic system. VII was good, but VIII really sucked me in. I've played through the game several times, which for me is a feat when I have this horrible inability to complete games that surpass ten hours of game play. I've put at least 200 hours into this game.

1.)Smackdown Vs. Raw series
With how cheap and lame pretty much all of the storylines in the actual thing have become nowadays, I think its much more entertaining to go with the games storylines and/or make your own wrestler and take him/her to the top. Plus I usually enjoy any game with CA_Blank feature (ie: wrestler, character, fighter, etc.)
2.)I have to say Tetris as well, Monkey. Because its just a timeless game that can be done on any console.
3.)The original Super Mario Bros.
I mean its a fun, simple, classic, entertaining game that IMO really got the industry taking off. Plus lets not forget the genius of WARP PIPES. ;)
4.) The Mega Man series, or more specifically I,II, and III.
These three, the first three, really stand out above all the others. It's like the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequel trilogy up until Revenge of the Sith. Also the weapon/power-up collecting system is pretty much timeless and was fun and innovative. It also gave us one of the most powerful (according to game informer or some other mag) video game weapon of all time: The Metal Blade.
5.)And Finally, if not really the best of ALL TIME, one I greatly enjoy playing; the entire Guitar Hero series. Actually it ties, with all the Mario Party games I have played in the past. Just good, simple, fun for a whole group of people.

JRPG's are for weeaboos who want to fap to 'em 3D boobs and who like ridiculous, overwrought "deep" stories and stupid emo characters with stupid hairstyles. Normal FPS's are for cheaters and ADHD cases without brains. Console gaming in general is for teens and kiddos that are turning gaming into RUINED FOREVER state. Adventure games used to be da shit but nowadays they're just lame and suck if we forget new Sam&Max. Platformers are great if you're kid and old platformers are fuckin' gold for everybody. Mario 3 > all this modern shit

Last good action game was Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. After that they made it all emo and shitty.

Multiplayer FPS's had couple of nice titles such as heavily modded Battlefield 1942 (fuck BF2 and its broken hitboxes) and America's Army (with Red Orchestra most realistic title out there. AND fucking awesome). Counter-Strike is for helium voiced kids and those goddamn kurwa-shouting polish bastards. Damn Poland...

Fighting games are ok but repetitive and lack any kind of substance. Guess Tekken 3 was da shit for me.

5. Deus Ex (PC)



NUFF SAID. One of last games before gaming started to go downhill in general and one of grand accomplishments of PC gaming. Addictive, original and FUCKING brilliant. It's awesome winrar from start to finish. Sure it's ugly motherfucker but so is Clint Eastwood nowadays.

4. Metal Gear Solid (PSX)

Genius 90's goodness that's quite possibly best game of original Playstation. This is what Hideo Kojima was able to do before he went all faggy and turned into shoddy director with no common sense and whose narrative vocabulary was made up from ridiculous conspiracies, silly mechanames and derivative and lame babbling about meme theory and other sorts of bullshit.

Best sneaking game of all time alongside Thief 2. Fucking gold with great plot and characters.

Also: no gay prettyboy Raiden. Yuck.

3. Fallout (PC)

Citizen Kane of RPG's. If you like RPG's and don't give huge props to Fallout you suck. Goddamn know-nothings.

Still kind of perfection of RPG. Bit too easy on combat side but as a trade one of best and most cohesively build gameworlds ever. Untill Bethesfags came and fucked everything up with their Fallout 3 bs.

Also, it's fucking Fallout. First RPG in which roleplaying was truly possible. (Really, all I said above was meaningless extra.)

2. Fallout 2 (PC)

ENUFF SAID. AGAIN

Not as cohesive or perfect organism as Fallout. However game is a lot bigger, in fact it's FRICKIN' GIGANTIC, has better and more varied combat. Also New Reno is first glimpse of sheer awesomeness Chris Avellone is capable.

My Top 3 are about equal in quality. All are all-time legends for a reason. That reason is: they rock

1. Planescape: Torment (PC)

What can change the nature of Man?

This is not vidya game. This is art like motherfuckin' Picasso or Shakespeare. Do you like philosophical depth? Do you like deconstruction? Do you like unique setting? Do you like brilliant dialogue? Do you like fuckin'-best-ever level characters? Do you like turning cliches upside down? Do you want to play best written game of all time?

Play PS:T and find answer to the question "what can change the nature of Man". Play PS:T and start to forever despise FF bishounen pretty boys when sheer badassitude and GAR that is your ugliest motherfucker on planet "named" The Nameless One. Enjoy the stunning, magistral art direction and utilisation of Bioware's Infinity Engine. Enjoy the fun combat (though it becomes easy with mage around halfway but that doesn't matter since spell animations are killers), perfected RPG system and real ability of roleplaying. God knows how rare that is in RPGs, especially nowadays. And the music is fantastic and unique

Hard to choose but My list would be someyhing like this:

1) Final Fantasy 7 (1997): While it's a bit overrated but I love the series for everything it has like the gameplay, story, graphics, and the music.

2) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: A lot of people already have this on their list but I can't help it since I love it so much. The game has a lot of nostalgia to me since I love the areas that lets you room around it. The story and the gameplay in general are just amazing.

3) Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001): I love the Metal Gear games and I love them all (the canon ones that it is), and it's so hard for me to choose to put which one on the list. If I had to choose then Metal Gear Solid 2 is the one. The game has a balanced out by the best video game story yet. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty also sets an example to how a sequel should be done and the artsystel, and music itself is awesome too.

I have not finish MGS4 yet if I do then it will likely take MGS2 spot.

4) Devil May Cry 3: A dark, fun, fast, and stylish action game like no other to me. The game has great characters, nice background music, and I love the tone that the game has. The combo system flows very nicely and I had a lot of fun when I first got this back in early 2006. I just love fighting hundreds and hundreds of demons at once.

5) Super Mario 64: Another game I love due to nostalgia. Everything is awesome since their is so much you can do in the game. The gameplay was far beyond anything for the time, the music was great and it had tons of replay value. I wish the DS remake was done better since I was rather hype up for a handel remake, and the game turn out rather bad.

System Shock was a groundbreaking First Person Shooter with Survival Horror and RPG Elements set in a Cyber Punk future. It wasn't exactly a smashing success in sales, but it produced a sequel that was probably one of the best FPSes in history and spawned one of the most memorable villains in all of video games. The ground work for not only Bioshock but Deus Ex was laid here.


4.) Fallout 2

Play game, do what you whatever you want in it. Want to be a bounty hunter gunning down radio scorpions and mutants with high powered guns?

Want to be a porn star and pimp out your wife?

Want to save your home villiage, or just be a thug in New Reno?

Whatever you want, Fallout 2 has it.

3.) God of War

ARES!!!!!! Give me victory, and my life is yours!

Yes the orginal hack and slash with a brain gets my number 3, for obvious reasons. Its just that damn good. You kill monsters and people with a visual style that makes Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star blush.

The boss fights are cooler than anything you'll see in any Hollywood Blockbuster, for a reason. Not only is because of whats happening on screen, but its also because of the tight control scheme that should inspire all so called action games.

2.) Bio Shock

A major take that towards current Halo and Doom games that take place on the same lame settings, this shows the type of settings games should create. The world is a indusrtual, vibrant one, full of color and flair. Advertising is everywhere, and hospitals are competeing with other hoisptails in a cut throat fashion. To use the toliet, you have to depoist money. All these little details, add up to craft a rich, yet creepy world.

Of course, Big Daddy. God damn that those fuckers. Best bosses I've ever seen.

Game play is epic to say the least. A small example, set someone on fire, than fry them when they jump in water, when they jump in and try to put out the flames.. Just Epic.

1.) Silent Hill 2

Despite knowing that it is impossible for his wife to be alive, James travels to Silent Hill in order to unravel the truth behind the letter, finding a cold, oppressive and empty town shrouded in a perpetual fog. During his exploration of the town, he meets several people: Angela, a disturbed runaway; Eddie, a psychopathic slob; Laura, a young girl who seems to know Mary and bears a grudge against James; and Maria, a stripper who is the splitting image of Mary and who implores James to stay by her side and protect her.

There is even more to this town then meets the eye though, as it seems to change for each one of them. To bend into a personal place for each one of them. Is this their own little hell or own personal therpay session? The town called for them, and restless dreams there will uncover something for all of them. But are those things they are even capable of dealing with?

Well, besides those, i can think of:

Operation Flashpoint:
To put it bluntly, it is THE realistic first person late 20th century combat simulator. Vast open spaces, an almost limitless number of controllable vehicles and the genuine tension of knowing you may die (yes, YOU, the game is utterly immersive, IMHO) at any given moment is priceless. No health bars, no superweapons, no zombies: pure blood and sweat combat (well, as far as a couch potato like me can tell, anyway).

Thief 2:
This is one of the rare instances where i rate a sequel higher than the original. While Thief 1 (which i also love to bits) was the game that pionered the concept of the "sneak 'em up" (Metal Gear? Wha?), the second installment perfected it. Perfect level designs, intuitive, challenging, but never frustrating gameplay, immersive as hell, and the art (The cutscenes! The soundeffects!) just oozes style (steampunk style at that). A++-wesome.

GTA series:
I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet. So i will: massive, guilty fun (didn't play anything past 3, though). And that's it.

I have Bioshock the bump because of the killer setting, witch flies past anything ever created in gaming. SS2 only beats out Bio-Shock a tiny bit in gamplay, and that ain't all that matters.

Also I consider this the Golden Age in gaming, not the crap years. Yes, the FPS orginality is deader than dead and all that. But the whining from most PC vets is insane (no offense)

Games like MGS 4, No More Heroes, Killer 7 the upcoming Silent Hill Shattered Memories, GalCiv 2 and of course Dwarf Fortress are singals that the shit is still out there, waiting to be found and explored.

Also there are good JRPGs out there, despite whatever Be "I hate anything that looks Japanese" Yantzee says. Just because most of them suck doesn't mean they all do. Key point, the Persona games.

Persona 3-4 would have made on the list, but System Shock 2...BARLEY beat them out. Those games have it. I don't know what it is, they have it

Another game I forgot to mention was Snatcher. Very well done game, and was made by Hideo Kojima also. It's one of his best games that is not Metal Gear next to Lunar Knights and Zone of the Enders IMO.

5. Hitman: Blood Money. Contracts almost ties out of ingenuity with the level designs, but Blood Money takes fifth place because of the sheer amount of thought that went into the game.

4. Pokemon Silver/Gold. Improved upon the few failings that the Red & Blue had, plus added a fucking awesome day/night cycle with related events. Not to mention an outrageously high-yet-not-unreasonable amount of little critters to catch! As much as I dig Platinum, I still can’t compare it to the fun I had on Silver.

3. Half Life 2. This game has everything. If it weren’t for my factoring nostalgia into the gaming experience, this would easily be my No. 1 game. I still haven’t played a game this amazing.

1. Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Yeah, I know, it ain’t Ocarina of Time. It was the first Zelda game I ever played, and it’s been the one I’ve gone back to revisit so many times that I’ve lost count. Plus, it’s awesome.

Gears of War 2. Plot, story, characters, and development were all terribly clichéd and unreasonably flat & stupid beyond words. But I don’t play Gears for the plot, story, characters, or development. I play it for the guts, the blood, the headshots, the explosions, and the violence. And that’s why I’ll probably be playing this for quite a long while to come.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I don’t think an explanation is needed for this.

I didn’t intend this list to come off so snobbishly retro, but . I don’t play games as often as I used to anymore, and when I do, I don’t usually have the time to get involved in something like Fallout 3 (which is an awesome game that I’m barely into, even though I’ve had it for months… :().

(to me best setting would be Fallout universe, propably... you can't go wrong with retro50s and postapocalyptic future)

As for Bioshock vs SS2, I'm not going to start debate but in my opinion Bioshock is so much worse in all areas (apart from graphics and setting. Got to love the genius art direction) it isn't even funny. Gameplay was terrible IMO. But well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions

Of course. I just enjoy poking fun at JRPGs. My dislike for JRPG's stems from the fact they aren't roleplaying games at all (though let's not start debate on what exactly is roleplaying game )

That's my "first game" I think. Legendary. Playing that 5 yo was scary and exciting as hell. I still think it's good game albeit I haven't of course played it in ages :)

I can't give these number designations so I'll just list them. Also, note that the choices encompass multiple games because they have similar elements that endear them to me.

Metal Gear Series

A brilliant, convoluted, sometimes mindfuck of a story. The idea of trying to sneak in and not let your presence be known rather than running in shooting the hell out of everything was something different and fun and challenging. It remains one of the greatest gaming experiences of all time (ALL TIME!), in my opinion.

Touhou Project Games

These Shoot 'em ups are some of the most difficult games I've ever played. It's like standing in the rain and trying not to get wet. The music is absolutely some of my favorite video game music ever. The fandom is up there with Evangelion as some of the most dedicated and rabid fans and there are a plethora of awesome music remixes, doujin art, and general crazy otaku stuff.

Katamari Damacy Series

These games are just awesome. Surreal/absurdist Japanese humor at its finest. Roll shit up and get bigger. Why is it so much fun? I can't say much about this game, you just have to play it and experience it for yourself. It's extremely addictive and just a wonderful game.

The Classic Survival Horror Games

This would include Resident Evil 1-3, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill 1 and 2, and the like. These games were great for me. It's very much a love or hate genre but the tank controls, the lack of ammo, the emphasis on avoiding enemies rather than wasting precious bullets, the weird camera angles, all made you feel panicked about what lied in the next room. The atmosphere was great, reminiscent of horror B-movies. These games were awesome when I was younger and remain awesome to this day.

The MOTHER series

I've always thought these games were great ever since I played EarthBound as a kid. It was an RPG set in our time and environment rather than the fantastic worlds of most RPGs. The main characters use things like baseball bats, frying pans, bottle rockets, and toy guns as weapons. They're great games and anyone who likes charming stories and characters along with brilliant Japanese humor should definitely play these.

I'm kinda surprised no one's mentioned Myst & related sequels yet. I almost included them on my top five, but I forgot to add them to my honorable mentions. I'd say the first and second were the best (even though parts of Riven were downright impossible, but the graphics & visuals for its time were out of this world). The third (Exile) was fun and brought the difficulty back down to something reasonable, and I never finished the fourth... whatever it was called. And the fifth changed the gameplay so much that I never got into it.

Oh shit, I even forgot the first two Oddworld titles. I played the hell out of Abe's Oddysee & Exoddus back when they came out. I loved that stuff.

Dino Crisis

I forgot about this game series, I love the first two games (I like to think the 3rd game never exist) and I forgot how much fun the first two games where.

I found this thread thanks to the new similar thread feature. The shit of one particularly childish member has been cleaned out and it's open for business again. Don't make me regret doing this.
