Well, I haven't seen this topic around anywhere and I asked the question to someone, so while I wait I guess I can ask the rest of the forums, and if this topic needs to go into another section of the forums I will gladly place it there.

Anyway, my question about the song is, who exactly sings which part in the song? And also, why? I have heard before there was meaning to why each of the three characters sang their respective parts of the song, but without knowing who sings which part, that is kinda confusing for me.

I tried myself to figure it out... too little success, the three of them are hard to discern from one another at times, sometimes it's easier than others...

anyway, can someone help me please!

This topic title sure will be confusing to the non-weeaboos... but I'll reply to this post sometime tomorrow in regards to the lyrics.

What I'll mention now though, is the meaning behind each of the seiyuu taking turn with singing a line relates to their feelings for Shinji. Also, Kotono Mitsushi, Misato's seiyuu, said she felt the line "I'll never be a goddess or anything like that but I'll still live on" describes Misato really well.

Hope that helps until I can give a better reply.

thanks, in my ears I felt it was Asuka who had more lines >.> I keep thinking it was her that says the line that goes, "and yet you are merely gazing at me, and smiling" or are my ears fooling me

Okay, here you go. Lyrics come from teh Evageeks wiki: http://wiki.evageeks.org/Cruel_Angel%27s_Thesis I had to fix one or two things, such as "kono sora" being written as "o-zora", lolwut.

There's a link to the full song here, which somebody decided to copy/paste the audio into the visuals from the Official Test Type (full) video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8k3pKHwJDI

I took the time to look into this since it seems like nobody else has. If anybody wants to put this on the Evageeks wiki, feel free, if it fits there (just please give me some kind of credit for taking the time to do this).

For reference's sake:

Rei Ayanami/Megumi Hayashibara
Asuka Langley Soryu/Yuko Miyamura
Misato Katsuragi/Kotono Mitsuishi
All three seiyuu

English:

Like a cruel angel,
young boy, become the legend!

A blue wind is now
knocking at the door to your heart, and yet

you are merely gazing at me
and smiling.

Something gently touching--
you're so intent on seeking it out,

that you can't even see your fate yet,
with such innocent eyes.

But someday I think you'll find out
that what's on your back
are wings that are for
heading for the far-off future.

The cruel angel's thesis
will soon take flight through the window,
with surging, hot pathos,
if you betray your memories.
Embracing this sky [universe] and shining,
young boy, become the legend!

Sleeping for a long time
in the cradle of my love

The morning is coming when you alone will be called
by a messenger of dreams.

Moonlight reflects off
the nape of your slender neck.

Stopping time all throughout the world
I want to confine them, but...

So if two people being brought together by fate
has any meaning,
I think that it is a "bible"
for learning freedom.

The cruel angel's thesis.
The sorrow then begins.
You held tight to the form of life
when you woke up from that dream.
You shine brighter than anyone else.
Young boy, become the legend!

People create history
while weaving love.
Even knowing I'll never be a goddess or anything like that,
I live on.

The cruel angel's thesis
will soon take flight through the window,
with surging, hot pathos,
if you betray your memories.
Embracing this sky and shining,
young boy, become the legend!

Eh, why the hell not. I might as well kill two birds with one stone. Again, please credit me if this is posted on the Evageeks wiki or whatever.

Evageeks wiki page for reference: http://wiki.evageeks.org/Fly_Me_to_the_Moon

Here's the official video Full version of Fly Me to the Moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1B4nOCv-kg

Then translated part of the interlude comes from Platinum episode 16.

Rei Ayanami/Megumi Hayashibara
Asuka Langley Soryu/Yuko Miyamura
Misato Katsuragi/Kotono Mitsuishi
All three seiyuu

English:

Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, darling kiss me

Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you

Translated from Japanese:

Do you love me?

Hey, you wanna kiss?

Why don't you become one with me?

Who are you?

Loneliness?

Who are you?

If you become one both in mind and body, it's a very, very comforting feeling.

Who are you?

Pleasure... Sky of reality... Cruel strangers...

Who are you?

English:

Do you love me?

Do you love me?

Do you love me?

Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars

Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars

In other words, hold my hand
In other words, darling kiss me

Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forevermore

You are all I long for

wow, thank you!

Hm, seems to be not as much switching of voices then I thought there were. At points I thought there were times where Asuka/Rei, Rei/Misato, and Asuka/Misato, sang parts together at times, not just all three >.> I guess I mistook one of the VA's for another. Any idea which two I might be having trouble finding the difference in?

My guess is Misato and Asuka.

I hope you liked the fact I decided to look into Fly Me to The Moon, as well. It's been bugging me for awhile that nobody else stepped up to look into those.

Yeah I did like you included it! and yeah >.> sometimes the three of them sounded similar too each other @_@

From how I was hearing it, I thought Asuka had more lines >.> being how she secretly does like/love Shinji, even though the lines she does sing pretty much blatantly proves that, figured she had more lines

*shrugs*

Blame it on how I like the pairing of Asuka and Shinji, especially since that pairing survived since the proposal... you know they ought to release a "all-Asuka" and "all-Misato" version of the song since they did it for Rei

They really should. There were at least TV-length versions of Asuka and Misato singing the Ending and this is what I've noticed with how they sound:

Rei's seiyuu is the best/most polished singer of the three, Misato's seiyuu has the best pronunciation with English (She actually says "Worship" instead of "Worsip"), and Asuka sounds the cutest.

But yes, Yuko and Kotono* singing the opening would be nice. Heck, even Megumi Ogata/Shinji did, though it was for a live concert so her voice isn't as good as it can be (oddly enough, the her take on Fly Me to the Moon for a live concert sounds better in terms of her voice).

*Kotono admitted she's not a polished singer in some interview, but her fans still like her... She even sang the songs on that Lilia from Ys album, 3 of which were in Eva and 2 in Rebuild.

I've noticed that too, lol. Not to go off topic or anything but when I heard
SPOILER: Show
Asuka gets jealous of Rei liking Shinji in Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0 and tries to impress Shinji with cooking
part of me thought

"God! They should have had her play her violin or something, and have her pretend she is doing it for the fun of it"! But I guess that works too lol

Since barely anybody replied to this so far, I might as well ask:

Do we know for CERTAIN that each of the seiyuu's lines are meant to be based on their feelings for Shinji? I mean, did Anno himself tell each actress what lines they'd be singing? I know the titles for the 3 singer version of the OP is "Director's Edit II" and the ED is "Main Version II" according to the Addition Album, where both songs can be found...

The lyrics matching each character's feelings for Shinji (Eva opening especially) is something I've heard several times before, but some actual SAUCE on the matter is always nice.

I have the original Japanese edition (non-pirated) version of Addition, and the booklet has nothing in the way of liner notes or anything that might indicate directorial intent. The writeup in Eva Fan Club (Eva tomo no kai) on Evangelion Addition doesn't mention either of the songs in question.

I will not go against the word of the almighty founder, just wish to add my own little theory onto the table

The title itself seems to imply it was directors intent on each characters feelings on Shinji, cause half the time (I know sometimes this is not the case but really a publicity stunt) a director's cut of anything is a change or addition to something that furthers the directors idea's on some things... and the lines they say in the song are far too perfectly picked for coincidence, With Asuka inexplicably getting the lines that seem to imply romantic interest (in my opinion at the least, coarse I could be wrong)

I agree completely, that's why it's somewhat disappointing that there doesn't seem to be much available on the subject. :(

It's an interesting question. The line selections are pretty ambiguous, but can we see patterns in it...?

I excerpted each character/seiyuu's lines from each of the 3 marked up sets of lyrics. (In order, so it's CAT, Interlude, FMTTM.)

Rei wrote:A blue wind is now
knocking at the door to your heart, and yet
that you can't even see your fate yet,
But someday I think you'll find out
that what's on your back
are wings that are for
heading for the far-off future.
Sleeping for a long time
in the cradle of my love
Stopping time all throughout the world
You held tight to the form of life
Do you love me?
Who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you?
Do you love me?
Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars
Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forevermore
In other words, I love you

Asuka wrote:Something gently touching--
you're so intent on seeking it out,
Moonlight reflects off
the nape of your slender neck.
The sorrow then begins.
People create history
while weaving love.
Even knowing I'll never be a goddess or anything like that,
I live on.
Why don't you become one with me?
If you become one both in mind and body, it's a very, very comforting feeling.
Do you love me?
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars
darling kiss me

Misato wrote:you are merely gazing at me
and smiling.
The morning is coming when you alone will be called
by a messenger of dreams.
So if two people being brought together by fate
has any meaning,
I think that it is a "bible"
for learning freedom.
You shine brighter than anyone else.
Hey, you wanna kiss?
Loneliness?
Pleasure... Sky of reality... Cruel strangers
Do you love me?
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
I love you

Asuka's set of lines are pretty straight forward, especially the last half. Could hardly ask for clearer expression of romance, I mean, come on - "Why don't you become one with me?" or "darling kiss me".

Interestingly, Misato's lines are also somewhat romantic with "Hey, you wanna kiss?" or "All I worship and adore / I love you".

This ties in well with the EoE kiss and with the commentary on Misato's little attempted-comforting scene in NGE TV, although I know I'm not in the majority when I see MisatoxShinji as a real possibility (as far as Misato is concerned).

SPOILER: Show
No, wait - I lied! I swapped Misato and Asuka!

Now is your mind blown?

As far as Rei goes, the selected lyrics make a great deal of sense if we think about Rei's connection with the Moon in the Proposal and with Yui's characteristics - Yui encouraging Shinji to live on, Yui singing, I mean, existing forevermore. And if we stretch a little, some of the lines even look like they apply to NGE events - 'Stopping time all throughout the world' wouldn't be a terrible description of Instrumentality.

As far as Asuka - the only lines which don't have any obvious meaning are 'The morning is coming when you alone will be called / by a messenger of dreams.' Everything else reads well as a description of her relationship with Shinji or her personal problems (eg. "Pleasure... Sky of reality... Cruel strangers").

So. My verdict? Either the selected lines do map well onto the characters and offer further insight, or they're so ambiguous that you can read any damn theory into them and I've done just that.

Obviously I prefer the former, but I'm interested in whether anyone can argue for the latter.

Double-check your lyrics with how they're colored in my above post, you reversed Misato and Asuka's lines. (For example: Misato says the line about "even if I'm not a goddess I'll go on living", Asuka's is "learning bible for freedom".)

I missed that.

Thanks!

EDIT: The point of the exercise of swapping Misato and Asuka is interesting, but I do think the seiyuu were told to preform it based on how Anno/whoever felt each character fit which line. Granted, we don't know for sure since no supplemental materials discuss the Main Version II Openings and Endings anywhere...
