One- I'm not gonna think about this Live Action Film until Greenfield actually has something to show instead of the same phrase he's been saying since 2003. I will say I doubt he'll have any real power in the production of a live action Eva film- most likely it'll go to the studio financing the film, since ADV is all but bankrupt. As an artist I just want to say Matt Greenfield doesn't strike me at all as a creative individual and at this point (As has always been the case) live action Eva is 100% for profits. Not because they have any passion or anythign to say.

Two- I'm of the opinion that there are some stories that can ONLY be told in animation. Regardless of who handled Dragonball it's a property that would be hard to take seriously in a live action format. Fox could've done a better job for sure (but it's Tom Rothman Fox so that's impossible) but anyone expecting a "good" DB film that's authentic to the show is reaching.

I doubt Matt would be directly involved in the production that much. A producer at best, but script, direction, etc will surely be handled by actual "movie people".

anyone expecting a "good" DB film

DB:E would have been good if they did on the Sayain Saga and made into a pop corn flick like Trasnformers was. While it might be a great flim but better then a movie that we would got.

I think Anno is kind of doing LAEM a favor by taking the series in a different direction with Rebuild, because if Evangelion's story has been messed with by its own creator, I think fans might be slightly more forgiving if the live action film does it as well.

Anno would be a great choice but I'm not sure if he can direct a real film or not. The creator of Wing Commander games direct the movie and the movie got awful reviews.

Trekkies did to the new Star Trek

I thought the Star Trek fans enjoy the new movie seeing the great reviews and good rep it has got.

Some trekkies despise the new movie while some sure are happy to see the franchise coming back from the dead. But theres those who just aren't happy with how the new franchise is being made to be more open to newer audiences, and the more casual fans.

I really hope Universal has the rights to this. I have this completely bat-guano idea of Pen-Pen watching Woody Woodpecker cartoons for some reason or another.

I remember in 2003 that Universal Studios would be the American distributor. I'm not sure if they still own the rights to the series anymore or not since it been almost six years when the movie was announced in May 2003.

I think only ILM could realistically pull off the good special effects such a movie like Eva would need. WETA does some ok work but it always looks really fake still. Still better WETA than some unknown digital effects house though.

I'm not advocating Anno directing the film... In fact, I think that that could actually do more harm than good. What I'm saying is, the creator has basically stepped in and said "you know, the show isn't the only way that this story can be told," and that sets the precedent for the makers of LAEM to have a bit more creative freedom than they might have had before. I'm sure some people will still complain that LAEM is "Evangelion for Dummies," but personally I am not worried about it. JJ Abrams' Star Trek was not as cerebral as the source material, but it was a lot of fun and intelligent enough to satisfy my expectations from the franchise. Some hardcore fans feel betrayed by ST's move to bring in more casual and non fans, but I don't think there's anything wrong with the approach Abrams took. He made a Star Trek movie that can be enjoyed by just about anyone, and introduced a lot of new fans to a franchise that was running out of gas. I think Evangelion's producers could stand to take a page or two from Abrams' playbook.

He'd shoot the entire thing from "groin's-eye view".

(Maybe a couple of people will get that one...)

I merged the original thread into this one because the original subject was "Vague Greenfield mumblings". Seems like it's become a lot more generic now: director, making it accessible, blahblahblah. There's probably threads for that stuff already.

Timstuff wrote:Basically, I don't see why a movie can't have good characters / story and still be fun. Just because the anime devolved into a dark joyless mess near the end doesn't mean that's the only direction that the story can go in. On the flipside though, movie trilogies typically get darker in the second and third acts, so I think we'll still get the dark cerebral material in the movies, even if it's done with more restraint.

I agree with this post and If this movie does get made then it will most likey be psychological thriller movie than action or adventure movie if they do on the first 15 episodes. Which will most likey be a three hour film that can turn down a lot of people to see it since people willl think it going to be a three hour action robot movie like Transformers but turn out it not. Watchmen is a good example when most people thought it going to be like be a three hour action superhero triller like The Dark Knight mixed with some 300 into it.

I wanted to post this in the other thread since it will fit better with the thread then the other topic.

I recall Weta mention it in a interivew back in 2004 or 2005.

Personally, I don't think that's very likely at all. The problem with Watchmen is that it wasn't that big of a hit, but it didn't need to be since it wasn't laying down the framework for a franchise. With Evangelion, the only way to do justice to the story IMO is as a trilogy, and to do that you've got to secure a big audience that won't disappear across three films. The first movie has to start things off with a bang and get people excited to see the next one. The stage is now set, and we know and like the players. This means that in the sequel, they're free to explore the characters.

I do not think "pyschological thriller" will be the word to describe the movies. I think it's going to be considered a sci-fi action movie, but that doesn't mean it will be light on character. I don't think they need to "bait and switch" audiences by advertising it as an action movie and filming it as a psychological thriller, because all that will do is piss people off and hurt their chances at a sequel. Just make a good movie that people will like, tell them what it is, and they'll watch it. You don't have to trick people into watching a movie if it's a movie they're going to like!

I think the most likely scenario will be that the movie is roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes long, with a tone more in line with Star Trek. There will be lots of action and fun, but the characters will still be in the front and center. People love action and adventure, but that doesn't mean they go "Waah! Boring!" every time the characters talk to each other about where they're at in life. People liking action does not mean they want their movies to be empty of character.

He's being smart by keeping his mouth shut for now. If something really is going on then he probably can't talk for legal reasons, but even so, saying he can't talk about it at least is better than saying "Oh, we talked with a director the other day. You can expect the movie sometime in the next 10 years!"

Any time he says "it's coming" I feel skeptical, but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt since I really want to see this movie to happen. It's possible that with the big screen success of Transformers and this week's release of Terminator Salvation, this project might actually get moving sometime this year... I suppose Comic Con is as good a place as any to make an announcement about it, so we'll see.
