Although the comic is actually my personal idea of why it has wheels, it was a botched/rushed/botchrushed Eva, but it didn't die or explode or anything, and they needed one for whatever 'provisional' purpose it is, so they put it on wheels. From a tactical perspective, a wheel-propelled machine has some advantages (and disadvantages, naturally). Kinda like giving an Eva rollerskates, it can now do maneuvers a regular Eva can't do. Plus, in the video, it does show some impressive mobility.

Now I wanna draw a rollerskating Eva.

I raised the issue earlier about the logistics of the whole thing. You show them generating a limbless torso in a tank -- which I suppose is possible, but, since Evas presumably grow "the usual way" by default (Adam reverts to an embryo, after all), this means they're have to intentionally suppress limb growth from the start. And I'm not sure why they'd want to do this unless they for whatever reason knew in advance that they were going to turn the Eva into a spider-tank. But that doesn't quite explain the "provisional" bit, either...

Meh. I mean it shouldn't be too hard for them to grow new limbs and parts for an eva right? Afterall didn't they grow new limbs and torsos every time an Eva would get battle damage?

Case in point after the extensive damage that Zeruel did to the Eva Units i would assume they had to re-grow arms, flesh/tissue for Unit 00 and Unit 02.

I wouldn't see how this would be any different or harder to do with Eva Unit 05. They just surpress the growth of the legs and or chop off the legs that were there originally and add on freakin' motorized roller blade legs for the Unit. And if the need ever arises that they need to turn Eva Unit 05 back into a bipedal weapon of destruction, just do what they did with Eva unit 02 and 00 by stitching up those legs you cut off earlier.

And if they did surpress growth, surely they can regrow legs and arms individually...... The Evas don't mind. They don't feel pain. They live for it!!

EDIT: And I'm sure that its been said before by either you Reichu or someone else. But perhaps Eva Unit 05 had an accident before it was turned into the four legged freak it is today.

Also as anyone here ever posed the possibility that they used an incomplete eva body used for synchronization training and just built ontop of it? Perhaps thats why it was never meant to be an actual Eva unit used in battle?

Or maybe its an Eva Unit that was revived from the Eva graveyard and was once a reject, but recently scientists found a way to put it to good use.

I think the idea is that it's a "provisional" Evangelion, which I, at least, presume to mean it was never "completed". Of course, provisional also means temporary, which means that it was created for a purpose, it was designed for this purpose(so whatever purpose it has requires it to have wheels and epic harpoonz), and will be discarded afterward. But then it could mean that after it's purpose is completed, it will be reverted to a "normal" eva and given full eva status.

Take your pick on theories, I suppose.

I know Evas can have limbs slapped back onto them and undergo other forms of extensive regeneration no problem (so to speak); that wasn't the "concern" of my post. (I even forwarded the suggestion that Eva-05 will return in the next movie with normal limbs.) It was, "Why would you want to grow a limbless Eva in the first place?" (Or grow a whole one, only to somehow wind up with a quadruple-amputee.)

I see you did propose some possible explanations for this bit of weirdness. I just wonder if Anno, Yamashita, et al., have one!

Eva-02's head and arms were intact. They "just" had to graft them back on. (Still perfectly good stuff -- Evas and Angels don't seem to have the same problems with rot that we do. See e.g. Ramiel's giant corpse lying around for weeks or months without polluting the entire city.)

@Itac: "Provisional" here is 仮設, which is like "temporary" / "makeshift". For the sake of maximum coolness, I hope the Ugly Duckling scenario comes to pass.

I meant it more like a birth defect. They grew an Eva, but it came out wrong... but it was still alive, and therefore of some use... so they made do with what they had.

Hence your speculative hypothesis is similar to my where i mentioned that Nerv may have grew an Eva that had defects, making it destined to become a reject in the Eva Graveyard.

And then.....out of the blue, they come up with this crazy ass idea to turn this reject of a deformed eva into an Eva tank. Meh. Its possible.

perhaps its more economical for EVA-05 to have mechanical limbs in space to save on the oxygen requirements for biological components

On that note, I think the blue version of Zerogouki should have it's own designation, something like Unit 00-A or Unit 00 Custom. Or we could call the orange version something derogatory like Unit 00 Kitbash.

Mere addition of pylons this time around isn't much of an upgrade gimmick (Eva-00's color scheme isn't being changed or anything), so Eva-05 might as well be the one to more fully "exploit" it. What, you don't think I thought of that beforehand? ;p

Sometimes i think the blue zerogouki was referred as Eva-00 KAI, but i don't know if it's an "official" designation...

don't the Eva producers themselves make fun of how they "upgraded" Eva-00 by basically giving it a new paint job?

That is, most mech shows like Code Geass, when the Lancelot is "upgraded" its actually significantly different, but Eva-00 was just a new paintjob and Eva-00's head slapped onto Eva-02's body.
