I'm often curious... how can you control such a complex bio-mecha... with only two joystick-like controllers? Not only that, but apparently they both only have 1 axis, forward and backwards

Indeed, otherwise why would they feel the pain of their evas? Or worry about levels of psychological compatability? I'm almost certain the controllers do nothing and the pilots need only sit and think.

Me agree. Here's what a Kensuke vs. Zeruel battle would be like:

Kensuke's Eva-14 is standing in the geofront, awaiting the arrival of the mighty Angel.

"Sugoi.... So many weapons...! And I actually get the use them! This is my lucky day!"

A loud explosion rocks the geofront, and Zeruel enters trough the hole ve blasted mere seconds ago.

"Sugoi! It's an Angel! And I'm gonnna fight it! I-I can't believe it!"

Kensuke quickly grabbed two rifles, and began to blast away at the vaugely humanoid form that was now hovering in the air above him.

"Su... Sugoi! These weapon's power is incredible! This will be an easy match! And I will be hailed as a glorious champion of humanity... Heck, maybe Misato-san will ask me to live with her instead of that loser, Ikari! I can't believe how lucky I am! Sugoi!"

That was before an arm shaped like a long, sharp piece of toilet paper approached Eva-14 rapidly. In the very last moment, the Eva was suddenly given concious thought. Her eyes turned red, and it opened it's mouth...

"Bummer."

... And so spoke her final words before the very, very, long and very, very, sharp piece of toilet paper cut her head off.



In Central Dogma, A slighty drunk Misato shrugged. "**** happens." She slowly turned to Makoto. "Hey, whesch Shin-chan? His pschycho powers would schome in handy right now."

Makoto, equally drunk, replied. "He'sch in the locker romm with Aschuka."

"Isch he pscycho, then?"

"No, he'sch finally having a good schtime, now that Aschuka hasch revealed her undying love for him."

Misato came up with a master plan. "Well, kill that little schlut, will'ya? That schould make Schinji pschycho again."

Makoto stood up. "Roger that, Miss Stress."

A lot like saying that an ordinary driver could beat Michael Schumacher on the racetrack by going all out and pushing through it without thinking. Shinji's afflicted with a case of Dumb Luck, something I've come to recognize after I managed to live through three wrecks. Kensuke would use tactics and pure skill to defeat the angel.

Also I think he would actually listen to what Misato has to say.

Your car's performance doesn't change whether you go all out or not. Eva's performance seems to, though. I didn't see either Asuka or Rei, both of which are pretty clever, doing too well against Zeruel and considering how all the angels are unique the role of strategy is somewhat decreased since no one has any clue what the next angel will be like, Seele can only guess, and strategizing against a totally unknown enemy is doomed to failure. The only strategy that actually matters is when Misato and 200 NERV techs spend 8 hours discussing how to deal with the angel that has already appeared, but is not due to hit Central Dogma yet.

Ultimately if anyone's strategy was good it was Shinji's, he attacked by surprise and kept up a continuous attack which screwed Zeruel up since his attacks are all long-range and he couldn't really make use of them. But if anyone other than Shinji got their Eva's arm blown off the fight would end instantly, for going through that the pSyChO rAgE is useful.
