I'm wondering why form 2 doesn't have the half-wing/halo thing going that form 1 does. Seems kinda disjointed that way. form 2 does look pretty cool in general though... especially giant menacing 'smile' or whatever that's supposed to be on his head.

The backstory does fit squarely within what one would expect of EVA, though I don't see the point of mentioning the teacher was killed or all the seemingly random namedropping.

All I can say is good work. I loved the back story! It would make a great fanfic, but, it would have been more interesting if Jerahmeel had met Shinji somewhere along the way while Yui was still "alive." I agree that he is like the opposite of Kaworu. Also, Kaworu is to cat as Jerahmeel is to dog, it would seem. The fighting ability is basic, but powerful and simple. Good job and Congratulations!

Yeah. Also Kaworu enters NGE being mistaken (by some) for a human, until it's finally found that he's Angel; Jerahmeel spends most his whole life in captivity, with everyone's full knowledge that he's an Angel, and eventually breaks loose. Maybe someone could write a fanfic on how he goes on a journey to try and become human, all the while on the run from the everpresent SEELE forces...
Okay, speculation over. :toothy:

Review before the next design:

I'd say that this was worth the wait. The artwork really conveys the form and spirit of the Angel in question. His armaments leave a little to be desired, but his elegant form and unique "mutation" ability gives him variety.

The thing that really jumps up, however, is his back story: instead of a monster of the week, we get a true character with a confusing and tragic backstory. Some elements of the history seem to ooze a little too much drama (everyone dying and being tortured for little reason) but for the most part, really takes the development of the Angels as sentient beings to a new level.

The symbolism, while seemingly loose at first, pretty much sums up the emotions that I get out of him: a feeling of pity and sympathy for an innocent being being warped and scarred in an unforgiving and uncontrollable environment. It's simple, but nifty stuff that has potential.

Trasafel the Angel of Bodies by Hazukari

Now:
Image Hazukari

Angel: Trasafel the Angel of Bodies
Height and Length: About as tall as Matariel and about as long as Gaghiel.
Appearance: Looks like a common house spider with a tan body and black stripes on its legs

A.T Field strength: About 2/3rds that of Zeruel’s (for the main body), the sub-bodies have paper thin fields (more on them later)
Movement: Very Slow but able to leap very high into the sky, allowing to jump from the tops of buildings

Abilities/Attacks: The Angel itself has only one main attack and that is a very slow firing particle beam discharged from its mouth. However, this attack is a last-ditch and is rarely used, since it requires a great deal of energy to perform.

Its main attack however comes from its ability to detach miniature clones (about 1/5 the size of the original body) of itself off its back end. These mini-Angels are far faster moving and are able to latch on to an Eva and rip it apart with their fangs. At one time upwards of 50 of these clones are able to exist, however they are very weak to gunfire (even a tank is capable of killing them) and they only can exist for upwards of 8 minutes before dying and returning to the main host

Scenario: Coming soon!

So basically a Matarael with less suckage?

It's okay I guess, but doesn't really provoke me to praise or wrath.

Its just kinda lacking in... well detail and everything. The idea is good, but it doesn't seem like it came off the drawing board much. If you have any more, I would be glad to see it, but this submission as it is is simply incomplete.

So I tried to think of stuff, but I got too carried away, so I limited myself to use Leliel's shadow as the general body. I ended up breaking my own rule. I drew inspiration from The Sandman Volumes, Leliel, Zeruel, Ramiel, The Alchemist by Paul Coelho (sp?), astrophysical theories, The Princess Bride, and my imagination. All other seemingly coincidental details are just that. I finished my project around a week and a half before the presentations. WARNING! I take a stand on how the universe was created, so Creationists, beware! Also, I re-write a whole lotta Evangelion background, and for that I humbly apologize for my intrusions upon your faiths and/or your beliefs, especially the well-versed admins, mods, and Reichu. Now, without further delay, I present to you...

Uriel!

Personal Description:

In the age before time, there was a small sphere. You've all heard of this, the small speck that created this version of the universe. Well, do you know its name? No? That's fine; it doesn't really mind that you don't. But it wants to know your name. It wants to know your life story. Yeah. It'll listen to ya when the times get rough, when your wife leaves you for that man-whore of a neighbor you got, or when your job is taken over. It'll listen to you. But do you know its name? Sorry, I've already asked that question. Its name is Uriel. It was here before everything else was here. Before the heat and the suns and the galaxies and the super clusters and the black holes and the planets woke from their dreams. It wondered alone, waiting.

Waiting for what, you say? Why, I already told you! It was waiting for you! Yes, Uriel has been waiting for billions of years to listen to your life story. Why? Why should such an impressive-creature listen to a small mammalian life form whose daily rumblings lead to sleep? Because it is written, that somewhere...once Knowledge has been collected once again, the Universe that we know will implode and begin itself anew. Why? Because Uriel decides that it should be so. It is like turning to soil over to accelerate growth. Time is never ending, but neither is the Universe. It gets old. It gets senile. It starts to rave about how The Beatles are better than Bob Dylan, which is absolute fail because Bob Dylan is Bob Dylan, and that itself is ownage.

Oops. I digress. So Uriel decided, a long time ago, that it should be a sound idea to restart the universe once all of the knowledge has been collected. Yes, that does sound like something far-fetched, right? I mean, how many civilizations in the Universe are self-sentient? Well...you're right about that. But every decision you make is made by a vote. And these neurons only have two choices: yes, or no. So you see, the possibilities are not exactly endless, especially for a creature such as Uriel. It had the first Fruit of Life. Wait a minute you say, the First Ancestral Race made the Fruits!

Wrong. Uriel paid them a visit. See...Uriel doesn't just collect information. It pays you, just as any good trader would. You take some of his wares, and because it's such a nice..um..guy, Uriel, returns the favor with some of the things that it learned along the way, and it is usually more than what you owe it. What a nice person.

So where does Uriel store all of this information? Ah. On his holy region. No, silly, Uriel doesn't have a vag00 or a pen island hiding somewhere. I'm talking about what you call an Absolute Terror Field, ATF, or an aura in some fan fiction circles, or what others, namely Angels, refer to as the holy region. Uriel manipulates his ATF, so that it stores the information that he has collected, in a form of higher dimensional language. Ha! Yes, Uriel does not exist in three dimensions. There is a larger part of it that exists beyond our scope. This component of Uriel maps out the places that it has visited, and the places that it needs to revisit, and the places that it hasn't visited at all...in our Universe, to save time. And now I must drink. 'Cus I am freakin' PARCHED, MAN! I promise I won't take long. You look a little annoyed. Well, what the hell else can we do in an inn full of people besides talk, eat, shit 'n piss, sleep, and drink? Read books? There's a library here? Exactly how big is this inn- oooh!

Ah this wine is awesome! Cabernet Sauvignon, my all time favorite. It's nothing fancy, really...I like the ones from California. You've never been to Cali? Where have you been? Where the sun doesn't shine- oh man. I had no idea man. My bad; I foolishly assumed that you were from Earth...yes, of course. I apologize. Anyways, when I was a lot younger, like below the legal drinking age, I tried this. And I loved it! It was the first red wine I tasted, and I fell in love with it. Yeah. I'm weird, say it. There ya go. Hahahahahaha! Yeah I did take longer than I thought I did. Anyways where was I...ooh yes, Uriel's Fourth Dimensional Component!

No, I finished that subtopic. Oh, the realms away from the waking world are a bit different; I am not quite sure how Uriel visits those places, but it does. Yes, you'll know when you see it- AH! YES! How Uriel looks like!

Well I'm afraid it's not that complicated, and it is that complicated! The very first Universe was created by its respective first Uriel. We don't know where that dude popped up, but it did. I call it the First Uriel. This isn't the first Universe, not by a long shot. How do I know...um...there are stories about the First Uriel. One I've heard was that it could accelerate time...or rather, move itself through time after calculating how long it would take for knowledge to exhaust itself. However, it decided, somewhere, that it shouldn't be so abrupt and impatient, and eventually agreed to wait the entire period instead of skipping. And that was the first valuable lesson Uriel learned: to control oneself. And it never forgot that.

There is a certain ritual where Uriel decides after the end of the universe, for whatever reason, to copy itself and split...like a human cell. As any biologist remembers, the copying isn't exactly foolproof or perfect, and therefore no two Universes are alike. Perhaps Uriel wants company, or wants a drinking buddy, or wants to map out the possibilities of how each Universe can end. Perhaps. These copies bid farewell and go on to their separate ways and do the cycle again. So each Uriel that are here today has an ever-decreasing fraction of the First Uriel...whatever that means.

There is also another ritual where Uriel splits itself up during the beginning of its universe. Perhaps this is to save time, because from that point forward, each Uriel is linked with the other...erm...with an invisible bond...yes, psychically! I was worried you did not know about what that meant. Also, there is yet another event in which a Uriel leaves exactly 60 globules over a planet with sentient life forms. These 60 globules form itself in a geometric pattern and monitor them. Each of these globules has its own fruit of life, but only one has a core. These globules communicated with themselves and vote on a time to join themselves into a new Uriel. This new Uriel will have some residual memories, but for the most part it is brand new. I assume that this move was via evolution, to make the Uriel's life a little less hectic. I mean...one Universe and one Uriel? That's like Santa Claus for...daaamn.

Now you're getting sleepy by my rantings about Uriel's history...what? You aren't? INCONCEIVABLE! PREPOSTEROUS! ABSOLUTE RUBBISH- ack, I digress again. Sorry guys! Nothings the matter! I'm just a little...surprised...nothing to see here! Yeah, sorry, my mistake! Shouldn't have shouted like that...yep...yeah I'll shut up and drink my wine...yeah yeah I'll go *blam!* myself too, whatever you please. Yes YES whatever you say...idiots.

I brought that upon myself, didn't I? Well, that's what I get, then. So, to the more juicy part of Uriel: how it extracts your information. Well...there's the case with Earth. No, not the one that I live in.....a parallel. See...Uriel is literally like an artichoke. You don't know what an artichoke is? You've got to be kidding me...oh well...it's simple. Uriel is made of concentric spheres, each of them inside the other, with its core (yes, it has a core) at the very center. Each sphere is a defense mechanism, some spheres more defensive or offensive than others. In this recorded incident, a young Asian male recorded these pictures down. It is slightly hard to understand his handwriting, so I will translate. Where did I find these pictures? Well...I found them on the floor of my bedroom, and I've kept these ever since. Why? Because these papers sent me into the new world that I know and love now, and have opened my eyes to possibilities I wouldn't dare try to touch twenty years ago.

So, without further delay, I will explain the incident to you.

Physical Description/Abilities/Defenses/Weaknesses/ATF Performances/Armor Type/Combat Skills and Strategies

I nearly forgotten: each sphere of Uriel has a mask. The majority of the masks of Uriel can be found on this sheet of paper. Also, Uriel retains the ability to levitate, float, fly, whatever, for all of its spheres and maneuver around objects or just around, following the principles of inertia.

Image

SPHERE 1

Image

Uriel's first shell does not move. It doesn't do anything at all. It simply stares and gathers information with its numerous eyes on its mask. There are black bands that overlap each other. This is fine; it is simply a decoration. The thin swastika is an ancient symbol...much older than the crazy Nazis who used it for their flag. I believe the swastika symbolizes tranquility, consciousness, good luck, or whatever. It symbolized an entire swath of good stuff, and Uriel, somewhere, picked it up and decided to don it. Perhaps he believes that it will bring him good fortune.

This sphere is not protected by its ATF simply because Uriel chose not to. Its thickness is a good enough defense in itself, 3 miles in all directions. Because it isn't protected by an ATF, it is heavily affected by a gravitational field, such as one when Uriel travels near a planet. This version of Earth tore its sphere to shreds by discovering this fact, and blasting away at the bottom of Uriel. The second sphere, protected by Uriel's ATF was not harmed, but the field acted to reduce friction between the first and second spheres, and so the North Pole slid down. The Earthlings continued to discharge rounds and eventually Sphere 2 was completely exposed. Sphere 1 is made of a concrete-like material, and is completely white, except for the black bands around its body and the mask, whose eyes are different-colored.

The goal behind Sphere 1 was to test the subject's capacity of destruction.

SPHERE 2:

Image

The diameter of Sphere 2 and all of its other spheres within it is 4 miles. Sphere 2's modus operandi is firing 2 mile long spires at targets. With all of its retracted spines, it looks like a honeycombed sphere. The body is a deep purple color, but the needles are jet black. After Sphere 1 is taken care of, Sphere 2 flies into the high atmosphere, or (more unnervingly) around a target continuously, waiting for an opportune time to fire. It does not have an unlimited supply of spikes; what one sees is all that one gets. There are "teeth" that keep the spikes from falling out of the hatches, and these release when Uriel decides to fire one of these babies from its hatch. This is the first sphere in which Uriel actively uses its ATF. Uriel releases these slivers at Mach 10, and has a rate of fire of 240 per minute. Releasing its spikes at this speed would not be a smart idea, as Uriel can only hold 480 spikes. A spike's diameter is 88ft. The spike does not explode. The honeycombed layer is made of a metallic substance that reacts violently with acidic substances. If this continues, then Uriel will pull back its ATF to protect Sphere 3, and Sphere two will remain honeycombed unless corroded. The spikes will be influenced by gravity. Sphere 2's mask is fitted on a junction of honeycombs. It is roughly the size of an adult man's palm.

SPHERE 3

Image

Sphere 3 begins with a bang. It swiftly travels to the metropolitan area or a densely populated area, and uses its ATF to rotate Sphere 3 around and around until the remains of Sphere 2 fling themselves off everywhere, causing massive damage. After Sphere 3 has cast off its outer shell, it travels to high orbit around the planet, projecting its ATF around the globe to scan the world for information, silently retrieving it up and storing it in its ATF. In this case, Uriel did drop globules around the world. Each shined brightly until the globule with the core awoke. In the deep future, the 60 globules will join together to become another Uriel.

Image

Returning to high orbit above Tokyo-3, Uriel begins to secrete a liquid. It is completely controlled by Uriel, and it forms a sort of UFO looking thing...a saucer! That’s it! A flying saucer that is 10 miles long in diameter, with a bulge, Uriel, in the center. The color of the liquid is clear, and its viscosity is similar to water. Uriel begins to rotate horizontally, as a dish spinning person in a circus act would…erm…spin a dish. Uriel chooses a small portion of the liquid that will be hardened into a ball at either pole of its shell as the shell continues to rotate. The hardened piece is black and probably denser than any earthen element. The conditions required to create this…erm…bullet, if you will, can only be created with Uriel’s ATF, so it is not exactly impossible to replicate such an object. It’s about the size of a two-story house. Its density, however, can be compared with Lead or something like that, so it’s not exactly the heaviest thing in the universe. Anyways, these bullets are maneuvered to the ends of the saucer for maximum acceleration, and then released towards Tokyo-3 or any designated target Uriel decides to attack as angel-made meteorites. More than two bullets and up to eight can exist at one time. It will take approximately 20 earth-minutes for Uriel to spin with enough force for the bullets to act like meteorites, and 5 more minutes for Uriel to time itself and release the bullets. The last bullet released will have the most powerful impact of the set.

Image

Ack! I’ve forgotten to talk about the sphere itself!

Image

It resembles a gas planet, with enormous hurricanes that can cover a quarter of the planet or little eddies in the jet stream. However, the shell is entirely made of a glass-like material, so if it is pierced in any way, it will distort this image. Yes, this sphere is not exactly a gas planet, but is rather eye candy put up by Uriel…for some random reason. If there is a satellite to observe Uriel, one can observe a thin jet stream snaking around the illusion. There are six masks, three revolving around the area near the poles,

This sphere itself is especially weak. Uriel’s ATF is busy with all of its machinations, so a direct hit shattering the sphere itself will be key to its destruction. It’s literally a half-mile thick glass sphere. However, Uriel may still move around and attempt to evade projectiles, which is why the positron rifle…ah? You don’t know what a positron rifle is? Well…it shoots beams of energy, I think, so it’ll be hard to dodge. I mean sure it’s possible; it’s not instantaneous, but it’s hard. Anyways, this gun thing will be decisive in destroying this thing. Or missiles. Anyways, once Sphere 3 is shattered, the illusion will disappear, and Uriel will use its ATF once more to rid itself of the rest of Sphere 3 that is attached to it, and will activate Sphere 4.

SPHERE 4

Image

This sphere, once activated, will briefly look like sphere 1, with random straight black lines around its body, without the swastika. Then the black bands will disappear, leaving a white ball, and the sphere itself will fall down towards Tokyo-3. Uriel will withdraw its ATF to protect the sphere itself as it freefalls back to Earth. After it crashes and stops moving, a single black band will reappear. A short while after, the sphere itself will disappear, leaving the black band floating in the air. This band is similar to the Progressive technology created by…what? You don’t know that either? Um…think of the sharpest knife in the world that can cut things when the knife is stationary. That is what that black band is. And what is worse, every three hours, another black ring will appear. There are over 60 thin black bands across the sphere. At the 48th hour after its activation, the sphere will begin to slowly rotate around a rotating axis…like, oh 20 revolutions per minute. A week after its activation, sphere 4 will begin to rotate faster at 120 revolutions per minute.

Image

However as formidable as this sphere seems, it lacks any self defense aside from its ability to outmaneuver and offensive capabilities. The rings themselves are vulnerable to physical attack, and will bleed. A few computer-aided shots to the black rings, and this shell of Uriel will fall to the ground and explode in a column of fire that will extend out a few miles out in the sky.

Image

SPHERE 5

After the fire dies down, one can see the crater very clearly. There is a swastika burnt into the ground, and a red sphere floating above the crater that looks visually the same as an Angel’s core, but with six masks revolving around the “core”. Huh? No, it’s not the core. Why would Uriel leave its core out in the open like that? Yes, it’s supposed to look like a core. Anyways, each core has one of two different facial expressions.

Image

Once the masks stop revolving, the eye parts of the masks begin to gush out clear liquid at a high velocity. I know that looks impossible since the masks are floating and all, but it’s Uriel. I don’t know all the tricks that it discovered throughout the years. Once the tears fill the crater to the brim, the sphere slowly descends downward towards it. Before it touches the water, an eye at the bottom of the sphere reveals itself, and when the eyeball touches the water, the swastika disappears and the fluid in the crater overflows.

This liquid actually is under complete control of Uriel. In this one situation, Uriel decides to create an army, and all of the hundreds of thousands created are controlled by itself telepathically. They form out from the liquid, and two of the types generated have a mask that resembles the Egyptian god Anubis. I don’t know why he did this, maybe he wanted to overwhelm his opponent. No, your right; Uriel treats every encounter as a game, so in a sense, it is somewhat a child. A very old kid. Anyways…

Image

These tall skinny ones are capable with fighting with groups of people alone, and have superhuman reflexes, strength, and can reconnect its body parts if quickly severed. If blown to pieces, they will not regenerate. Its limbs can extend explosively as an attack or to demolish something in the way. All of Uriel’s creations do not have an AT Field, and require that Uriel telepathically control their limbs and what not. Uriel itself does not seem to mind the strain that one would probably have controlling hundreds of thousands of troops individually.

Image

This big thing is sort of the artillery of this army. It can use its “foot” to absorb objects, such as a rock or a porcelain mug, through its body and eject them accurately and forcefully through its palms, fingers, or shoulders. The body itself is unlike the first type, which is wet and feels like mud. This one has a hardened body and its “skin” feels rough. However, this type’s specialty is strength, albeit its night-human reflexes.

Image

The final type of incarnation floats on its own, and can shoot energy bolts, spheres, and beams of energy from its hands. It may fire 120 discharges of varying quality and accuracy per second. Regardless of aim, inaccuracies develop after the shot travels for more than 30 miles.

And last but not least is Uriel’s own incarnation. It uses the remainder of the liquid to create a gigantic 80m tall body for its “core”.

Image

It wields a hollow staff that is also filled with the liquid. I know this is hard to picture because everything is clear, but if Uriel breaks a portion of the container, the liquid inside will harden into spikes. Uriel uses this staff to physically attack its opponent and energy blasts whose maximum power is a charge for 40 seconds resulting in a blast radius of about 1 mile. This thing can also fly up to 300 miles per hour. Yeah, have fun, right? Right!

There is one very simple way to destroy everything I’ve just described. Cause Uriel’s “head” to disintegrate. Fine, it isn’t that easy. Uriel has a stronger AT Field this time around, and can individually manipulate each of its soldiers as it fights say…an Eva. But after the head disintegrates, Uriel’s manifestation and its army liquefy to pools of liquid.

Uriel’s sphere hangs in the air, and uses its AT Field to melt off this sphere to reveal the next one. During this process, screaming can be heard, as if Uriel is screaming in pain. However, this is simply recorded...but most people observing Uriel at that time are not aware of this.

SPHERE 6

This is the second to last sphere that one will encounter with Uriel, and it’s a giant eyeball, with a radius of 2112 feet. Where the pupil is supposed to be, there is instead a mask.

Image

This sphere is capable of tactile telekinesis because of Uriel’s ATF, meaning that Uriel has complete control over the subatomic particles of the object that it is targeting. However, Uriel restricts itself from using its ability directly on the opponent and the planet, and this is so because Uriel is analyzing its opponent’s strategies. Returning to its strategy, Uriel will tend to pick up mound of earth or other materials, and fashion them into harder substances to throw them at a target, all using its AT Field. It will pick up objects and substances to shield itself from attacks, and so will hover close to the ground, where it can pick up objects quickly. It can throw objects at a maximum velocity of 400 mph, but this will completely drain its ATF and leave it open to physical attack. Its limit to what it can pick up is that the mass of the object is inversely proportional with Uriel’s ATF. To demonstrate Uriel’s limit, if Uriel attempts to life a supergiant, then its entire body will disintegrate. In any case, Uriel using its ability will weaken its AT Field, leaving its body open for attack. There is also a thin hole in Uriel’s AT Field. If one launches a projectile at the mask itself, and the projectile’s path is perpendicular to the plane that is tangent to the center of the mask, then the sphere will turn to gas and will reveal the last sphere. This hole is as wide as an adult human’s clenched fist.

SPHERE 7

Now, this is the strangest part of Uriel. One would expect that Uriel’s last sphere is something that can wipe out all resistance. And in a way, it does, but it reveals its weakness. Sphere number seven, if you were counting, is Uriel’s core! Ah, so now you’ve woken up. Yes, I believe I’ve talked through the night. I smell pancakes somewhere...perhaps it is my imagination.

Image

Sphere 7 has one mask, and its job is simple: to collect any remaining data and to repair severe damage done to the planet. Its mask is not a mask at all, but a gate, holding Uriel’s true eye. Once it opens, Uriel’s one true eye shines everywhere, ignoring the fact that Uriel’s mass and other objects of mass. The light emanating from Uriel’s eye is a project of itself into a person’s soul. However, in this process, all exposed to the light stop all non-vital movements. This light also activates the 60 satellites that Uriel planted earlier, and their eyes do the same, transmitting light from Uriel’s true eye to the satellite’s eye. The entire world is covered in light. This event happens for a few seconds, and then Uriel uses its tactile telekinesis from its previous sphere to reconstruct all severely damaged landscape, but will not repair anything man made.

Uriel flies out of the atmosphere at a tenth of this universe’s speed of light. Yes, that’s it. NO WAIT! Uriel shares a part of its knowledge that it collected with a 100 randomly selected people. What is it? It can be anything….I wouldn’t know.

All I remember is that I woke up one day knowing this story and an urge to tell it to people. Now that I’ve burnt up a few hours, it’s time to tell your story, good sir. And more wine!

There are interesting ideas here... in fact too darned many of them. any one of these forms might have been a good entry, but all seven (inclduing the freaking goo army... wtf?) is overkill on a truely epic scale.

In before the last design:

This was worth the wait, as it is clear that you made full use of your time, TAO. I'm sorry if I ever doubted you!

This is a massive concept: the design is detailed and the illustrations are very specific. You should not have been so discouraged before: these sketches are perfect at conveying your vision. The very first sketch really knocks you out with what your Angel is all about. I think there is enough here to really put your concept together in full form.

I must say that your Design has a huge array of features, so much so that is seems overpowering. And the general concept itself kind of warps reality. I wonder how everything is supposed to exist with this thing running around?

Also the presentation of the Angel has a very personal tone, like that of a letter rather than a factual essay. It's quite unique, if a bit disorganized at times. Well, let's see how you fare in a week!

I apologize in advance if any of this seems long: I've been working on it for a year or two now. For your convenience, there are notes labeled tl;dr if you just want to skim through.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to draw my vision as well as I thought I could. As such, I'll be using many reference pictures combined with what I have in the hopes that it will all come together and give you a sense of my vision.

Here goes nothing:

Face Concept of Iblis

Disclaimer:
Technically, there is already an Iblis in the Evangelion universe; he looks like a giant turtle and is featured in an Evangelion pen-and-paper RPG.
I first heard the name in an article in Sadamoto’s manga about the RPG game. I found the name and concept fascinating, and from then on I poured research on the religious and symbolic background of the being called Iblis.

Personality:
Arrogant, vain, and manipulative, Iblis lives up to his title as the Angel of Pride. He is a fiercely independent individual: refusing to take the orders, advice and assistance of others. Intentionally, this attitude parallels that of none other than Asuka, whose pride was legendary in NGE.

He uses his knowledge and skills to figure out exactly what to say and do to piss others off. This is part of his strategy to provoke and distract his opponents and render them open to a fierce and surgical strike.

The Muslim Devil is narcissistic and relishes in his free will, sometimes creating and destroying just for the fun of it. Iblis wishes to be self-reliant and independent; to exercise his free will and be able to do anything he wills to do without limits. He doesn't want to be told what to do by others, to do anything for others, or do anything based on predictable behaviors or needs that can be manipulated.

Iblis is amused by the mental anguish that all other individuals face and looks down upon all personal relationships (particularly romantic ones). He sees this as a sign of his superiority: while others are paralyzed by fear, indecisiveness and/or ignorance, he seems to be immune and free from this drama. For his own pleasure he is bent on twisting other’s emotions and words into things that would scar them for the rest of their lives.

Yet, like Asuka, his outward confidence is usually a ploy to cover-up his own insecurities and self-consciousness. That being (possibly as an exchange for his complete freedom) he has no solid goals in his life and, since his inception, has been leading a long, lonesome and pointless existence. He also has a foreboding sense that his reality is not what it seems and that some bigger, subtle force is looking down on him, manipulating him, and insulting him from the outside somehow, for reasons that are beyond him. Rather than some overt symptoms of a mental illness, these are essentially the same issues that many philosophers contend with in explaining the meaning of life and the existence of free will and freedom of thought – though a diagnosis of a personality disorder is not outside the realm of possibility.

He has a very low opinion of females and feminine behaviors, and is very merciless in dealing insults and brutality to such individuals; in general he has a bad habit of using making references that are sexual and violent in nature. While it is more geared towards disrespect and a perception of their inferiority, there does seem to be some amount of hatred underneath this behavior.

If there is anything positive to say about him it is that he is predictably strong-willed, as he desires to be in control of his situations and be the bastion of free will. Stereotypically, this bad boy has a very “can-do” attitude and views many of the things in his way as challenges that he can work around with his skill and brilliance. This is opposed to most everybody else in NGE – who see such things as immovable obstacles that serve as reminders of their own ineptitude. His confidence in tandem with experience affords him a fair amount of emotional hardiness that is rare among NGE characters. This allows him to shrug off or ignore most of the things that would distress others. Iblis also possesses a sharp wit and can quickly pick-up on the behaviors of others, which he uses to crack jokes and predict the actions of others.

While he is a brilliant schemer and tactician, his ultimate goals and desires are shallow and uncomplicated. And while tough and often focused, once thrown into a rage, Iblis can be very impulsive and wild – even desperate if he finds himself losing control.

tl;dr Iblis is a dick.

Background:
In the Qur'an, Iblis was described as a unique creature – he was a Jinni (as in genie), a being made from smokeless fire; as opposed to Angels who were made from light and humans from clay. He was cast out of the Garden of Eden because he refused the order of Allah (God) to bow before Adam and accept him and his family as superior beings. Following that he vowed that he would use his free will to become the enemy of humanity and deter them from the way of God.

Further, according the Bible, it was stated that when Lilith left Adam she met and coupled with the Devil (Iblis) to produce Lilim – the devil children. What these stories have anything to do with NGE and Iblis the Angel of Pride remains to be seen.

It is implied that Iblis may be older than Adam and Lilith and may have borne witnessed their birth. It may be possible that he was born from a different Seed of Life altogether – or is one himself.

His goal is to rid the universe of all oppressive forces that threaten to repress all free will and destroy all of existence (physics, disorder, God, etc.). On paper it sounds like a rebellion against oppression, but in practice it’s more like a bloody revolution. He wants to find some means to become an absolute being and be in complete control of his own destiny. Furthermore, he perceives all other individuals (Angels, humans, even those sympathetic to his cause) as threats to his own freedom and individuality. Thus, in his crusade for freedom and to destroy his opposition, he will subjugate or destroy all in the universe – all as a means to an end.

tl;dr Iblis is the devil, and wants to be better than all you fools.

Physical Description:
Iblis is humanoid in form with thin, lanky features and long arms and legs. His design consists of reptilian features, fire iconography and redundant/overcompensationary parts.

His body is covered with a layer of coarse, rocky armor that is mainly black and red. It is thickest on the shoulders, chest, upper back, spinal column, thighs and inner abdomen. The details on these parts have the texture of charred bark and wood, with deep fissures and cracks running along the surfaces. The rest of the lightly armored sections have the look of fresh coal and shows several light engravings and reveals his lanky frame. The areas behind joints and the neck and face are covered with a black, flexible, leathery skin.

His chest shows off his pectorals and the sides along the abdomen, triceps, thighs, and face have blood red engravings resembling that of wrinkles or veins. His blood red core can be seen peeking from below and between his two pectoral pieces. Around the core are jagged plates of armor that help to reduce exposure of this vulnerable area.

Image
Partial sketch of torso and thorax.

The scalp is pointed and is raised slightly to form a mane or frill. The eyebrows are two very short, protrusive, and bump-like, horns.

Iblis has three pairs of eyes: one pair facing forward as usual, another pair arranged slightly above the brows and to the sides of the head, on the temples, and the last pair on the back of the head. The eyes are blood red in color with narrow, black slits for pupils; the area around them is covered in red and black wrinkles or veins as a sign of age.

Image

In true bad-boy fashion, he has a short, downward pointing chin. The jawline is triangular in shape and he has two sets of jaws: one inner jaw functioning much like the human jaw, and an outer pair consisting of four mandibles, appearing to be split down the middle. Iblis' face seems to be twisted into a permanent sneer - a sign of his overconfident attitude. The tongue is long, forked, and red like that of a snake and he has a habit of wagging it as a show of ridicule.

Image

The shoulders are slender with extra padding extending on the deltoid regions. The tops of the shoulders also have pylons similar to that of the Evas, but are distinctively much shorter and less pronounced. They function as a clamp-and-sheath system that hold and retract his two weapons when not in use. The pylons are fused with the upper body armor and allow free movement of the arms and shoulders without moving themselves.

Image
Arms with pylons and sword. Note that pylons are in a fixed position and do not move with the shoulders.

Thin, gauntlet-like layers of armor that taper off shortly past the elbow cover his forearms. Each of his five-fingered, claw-like hands have two poseable thumbs on the sides of the hand. These afford this fighter exceptional grip.

His legs are long and muscular, with armor plates covering the sides of the thighs and the shins. The legs are pair-jointed: starting from the feet, the shins lead to a reverse knee joint, followed by in intermediary section which precedes the main knee leading to the thigh. These locomotive limbs allow this Angel of questionable status to run and jump with great speed and strength as well as making his arsenal of kick attacks very potent. His feet are somewhat hoof-like: with two long toes and one thick heel. The feet are both flexible, allowing him to grip the ground, yet stiff enough to deliver sharp blows.

Image
Sketch of the legs (partial on the right, more finished on the left).

Iblis has an interesting wing arrangement: placed in the same manner as Adam and Lilith, Iblis also has six wings (a symbol of a high-class angel in the Bible). The left and the right sets of wings are different from one another: the three on the left are big, black, raven-like wings with black, pointed feather-like plates, while the trio on the right appear to have been ripped off; replaced with light wings (similar to Unit-01's and Lilith's wings in EoE). They glow red in color and have the same length and function as his physical wings. Both sets retract and compact themselves into small buds on the back when not engaged. The loss and incomplete replacement of the right set may be scars from a past battle that never healed properly.

tl;dr He looks like what Satan would look like if he tried to cosplay as an Eva.

Abilities:
Iblis was built light for speed, mobility and aggressive close-range battle. The following are the tools of his trade.

Defenses:
    AT-Field: Independent, Dual-layer Field
    Strength Rating: Med + Med
Iblis’ ATF consists of not one but two fields active at once. Each field oscillates at a frequency separate of the other. To prevent the fields from canceling each other out due to their opposing frequencies, there is a small air gap separating them; thus one field encompasses Iblis while the second wraps around the outer area of the first. At their full expansion, the air gap between the fields flares and glows due to the heat and vibrations of the fields, creating a slight, intimidating red aura to form around his devilish figure.

The two fields, while each roughly as strong as the one protecting the 3rd Angel Sachiel, have a combined strength of a High-strength field like that of Ramiel's. However, the real advantage of having two AT-fields is that not one Eva or Angel can cancel out his defenses. Since they are at different frequencies, there is no way one opponent can bring down Iblis' field with their one ATF. Thus, if an adversary sacrifices its ATF to cancel his, he is still reasonably protected while his opponent is defenseless. Or, if he his confronted by two enemies, the resourceful devil can dissolve both of their defenses and engage both at once.

The main glaring drawback to this adaptation is that, when expanded, the secondary field actually acts as an obstruction during single CQC. Imagine trying to punch someone while inside a bubble that reaches out to your arm’s length! In order to offset this in offensive situations, the unfortunate devil must either lower his secondary field (defeating its purpose) or channel it somewhere else.

The obvious counter to this is to use ATF piercing weapons, such as a particle beam or nuclear-level explosives to overwhelm both fields or simply use two ATF sources at once.

    Armor: Energy Absorptive Organic Non-metal
This armor that the dark-and-red one carries is a strong, rough non-metal reminiscent of rock, coal and/or ceramic. Light layers cover the thinner and more flexible parts of his body, but thicker layers exist on wider areas such as his torso, thighs, shins and forearms. The thicker armor with a look of charred bark is fairly heavy, however the thinner armor that is as coarse as coal is fairly light.

The main feature of this armor is that it is capable of insulating against attack and absorbing shock and energy. It is also able to soak up liquid and moisture (such as blood). The shock-absorbing properties of this material can muffle explosions and allows the dark one to shrug off physical damage, and the energy-absorbing properties delocalize the effects of directed energy attacks such as particle beams. It can also resist changes in temperature and irradiation for a time – useful if in case Iblis were to attempt re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere from high orbit. The armor fragments bit-by-bit when it absorbs enough force, and excess heat is dispelled from the body by actively radiating it into the environment.

    Image
Artist's rendering of the Space Shuttle demonstrating effects of its ceramic tile heat shield. This is a similar effect on Iblis’ armor.

While the armor offers great protection, Iblis is overall somewhat less armored than some of the other high-tier Angels. If enough of the armor can be fragmented or destroyed, it could obstruct mobility. While it requires an enormous amount of energy, it is possible for the armor absorb enough heat to bake Iblis in his own body armor – akin to wearing a hot coal vest. Also, the material is fairly slow to replace if damaged.

    Regeneration Full Automatic Healing
    Time: 5 sec.
Iblis is capable of instantaneously and fully recovering from a full offensive onslaught. He requires 5 full seconds after sustaining damage before his healing ability takes into effect, which will fix him up instantly. This unconscious ability requires an uninterrupted store of energy and will function as long as he isn't dead, expanding his AFT beyond what it is normally, using any ranged energy attacks or sustaining any more damage. If any of these occur during this period, the required energy must be recovered and the “timer” will reset back to the beginning.

tl;dr Iblis is tough and heals fast; has two AT-fields for overcompensation.

Offenses:
Iblis is primarily a melee fighter with few ranged attacks. Using his speed to close the gap between him and his enemy, he delivers devastating and swift damage utilizing an array of martial abilities.

    Melee:
    Damage: Med
    Range: Short
    Speed: Med
The Devil incarnate uses an offensive style that takes advantage of his long and powerful legs – something that affords him great melee range and power. He is fond of using a variety of wide, powerful, and quick kicking combos that knock around his opponent and allow him to control his enemy’s position. Other things in his arsenal are a handful of quick and sly punching, counter, and grapple moves to throw off his opposers. Iblis also likes to change stances and switch from hand-to-hand to armed combat to mix things up.

    Image
Poster is of Muay Thai kicks. These are possible forms Iblis may use in combat.

    ATF-modulated Dual Blades
    Damage: High
    Range: Short
    Speed: High
Iblis' preferred method of melee attack; he draws this pair of identical, dual-edged swords from two movable pylons on his shoulders. They clamp onto the blades and point down his back when stored away, and slide up to bring the handles of the blades just past his shoulders and release their grip when needed - allowing Iblis to quickly and conveniently draw his weapons at will. Each sword is a single piece derived from his hardest body armor. They are shaped similarly to Katanas sans handguards and can reach from Iblis' waist to his feet, blade tip to butt of handle.

By themselves, each blade is only a single molecule thick at the edges. When drawn, Iblis can focus his ATF (if possible) into his weapons, permitting him to generate a powerful, localized anti-ATF onto the blades. When active, they glow a yellow-orange color – like steel swords taken from a hot forge. In this mode, he can cut with greater force and ease than what is otherwise possible, bypassing heavy armor and enemy ATFs. More importantly, it allows him to hold his own and defend against other similar ATF-modulated weapons.

    Image
Steel while heated in the forge.

They are relatively light, thus allowing Iblis to perform rapid and devastating slashing and stabbing combos with incredible speed. He has excellent hand-eye coordination, allowing for precise swipes, and is able to move his blades at a speed that can block projectiles at certain velocities.

In using his swords, he sacrifices the use of his legs for kicks. The lengths of the swords also have a relatively short reach, leaving him vulnerable to Indiana Jones or Sasuke Sagara-style tactics. While he’s fast, it’s not impossible to stop his sword attacks. Finally, it is possible to remove the ATF properties of the weapons by dissolving Iblis’ secondary field before or (with effort) after he channels it onto them.

    Image

Situations Iblis does not want to get into

    Inferno Shot:
    Damage per shot: Variable
    Rate of Fire (RoF): Variable
    Range: Variable
    Energy cost: Variable
A super-heated ball of plasma is shaped from either of the hands. This plasma is red in color and looks very much like a handful of fire. When launched the ball explodes on contact, melting armor and burning flesh in the process. Depending on the angle of impact and the amount of plasma contact, a layer of the heated plasma sticks on to the target surface – continuing to burn and exacerbating damage.

The range and damage of this attack correlates positively with the amount of energy that is collected into each shot; conversely, the rate of fire correlates negatively. The more plasma that is concentrated in a single shot, the more powerful the shot and the further it will go, but the longer it will take to do it.

    Image
Possible form of Shot. Picture is of ball lightening in action.

    Inferno Phalanx:
    Damage per shot: Light
    RoF: High
    Range: Short
    Energy cost: Low (per shot)
A variation of the Shot: Iblis fires a short, rapid burst of plasma shots from one hand, which creates a conical blast radius that overwhelms a target. Works best at very short ranges but expends a fairly large amount of energy and effort in a typical strike.

    Smokeless Fire:
    Damage: Heavy
    RoF: Low
    Range: Med
    Energy cost: High
By focusing a great deal of energy into one of his fists, Iblis generates a blazing inferno starting from his claw up to his shoulder. By thrusting his arm with seemingly great force, as if he were to claw at his enemy, a red, fiery wave of super-heated plasma and positrons erupts in the direction that was clawed at. Ribbon-like energy tendrils wrapped in fire extending from the length of his arm lash out and slash at his target with great explosive force.

This attack has a range of short-to-medium range and requires a relatively high amount of focus and energy.

    Image
Image of a fire streak. Imagine a more focused stream, and you are close to visualizing the attack.

    Crimson Wave:
    Damage: Heavy
    RoF: Low
    Range: Short
    Energy cost: High
A short-ranged blast attack, Iblis vibrates his two AT-Fields very rapidly and charges them with energy. As they energize, they glow a furious red color and generate an enormous amount of heat. Their strength can double each before he finally releases the energy in the form of a furious eruption equivalent to several nuclear-level explosions.

This attack takes some time and a lot of energy to use, and he must stand in place to perform this, but it is great very effective when surrounded by targets invading his personal space.

tl;dr Iblis pwns with the sword, rains fiery death, but lacks range.

Bells and Whistles:
Iblis only has a few quirks about him that he can use in battle.

Telepathy: Iblis can talk with and read the thoughts of other sentient beings when they drop their guard or when their ATF is at their weakest within a radius of a few miles around him. Obviously, this allows him to obtain information about his enemy’s plans and provides a two-way method of communication. However, reading other’s minds without their permission and telepathically speaking to them are two slightly different things.

While in theory telepathy can provide an advantage in battle, in practice it has a very limited use – particularly in intense CQC situations that rely more on timing, instinct, and opportunity than meticulous planning. In fact, application of this ability in his preferred method of battle can be redundant and a bit of a distraction, as it puts him too much in a defensive stance.

A better use of his telepathy is to communicate with others and, ultimately, harass his foes in their own minds – trying to manipulate them or force them to doubt themselves. His use of telepathy also earns him the reputation as one who whispers wicked thoughts into the ears of others.

Though initially intrusive, it is possible to block his telepathy using one’s ATF and/or sheer force of willpower. One can prevent him from intruding their mind and still establish two-way communication, or block him out entirely, based on how one can change their way of thinking or overpower his probing.

Energy Sense In addition to heightened but standard senses such as high visual acuity, the Dark One is also sensitive to thermal and electromagnetic phenomena – particularly those found in the S2 organ. To him they appear as transparent flames emanating from the source of the energy, such as an Angel’s core. Judging solely on the intensity and stability of the flames that he can see, he can judge how much energy his opponents have, their emotional state, and if they are preparing for a large attack.

tl;dr Iblis is the voice who tells you to burn things, and he can see if your power level really is over 9000.

Overall:

Advantages: Iblis excels in speed, agility and relentless attack.

His ground speed is almost unmatched and performs best on terrain. His speed in the air is commendable: closely matching Armisael, Iblis can accelerate very aggressively and perform high evasive maneuvers. Within melee range, his movements are almost snake-like and can be difficult to track.

His advanced nervous system and sensory abilities allow him to control his body and movements with precision and speed, as well as be aware of all that is around him and keep track of multiple opponents.

His skinny look belies his prodigious strength and his aggressive melee skill is his greatest asset: combined with his speed, his relentless strikes are nearly unavoidable and very formidable. His ranged attacks are versatile and effective in many situations.

His tough armor is sturdy enough for him to eat enough damage until he can get within range and quickly dispose of his opponent.

His unique AT-Field configuration will throw most opponents off their guard and gives him a decisive defensive advantage in Angel vs. Angel combat. Furthermore, his ability to channel his ATF onto his swords allows him to hold his own against a wielder of the Lance of Loginous or other similar weapons in combat.

This Angel’s rapid regenerative ability surpasses that of many others and makes him very difficult to disable for long, much less kill. This in addition to his scheming and deception can have a very demoralizing effect to opponents.

Disadvantages: Flight is an area of weakness for him, as he has less skill in the air; his maneuvers are more predictable and his sword skills are less effective in the sky than on the ground.

Though he is capable of processing an enormous amount of sensory information at once, it is still very much possible to overwhelm and disable his senses with an enormous combination of physical strikes, thought noise, mind games and general chaos.

His body structure also tends to be top-heavy and has a high center of gravity, and he must make efforts to maintain his balance during high-speed maneuvers – lest he end up in the undignified position of being flat on his back. Also, his rapid combination attacks can be predicted and parried, throwing off his chain of assaults and throwing him off-balance just barely long enough for a counter-strike. A strong opponent who can manage to interrupt his attacks, knock him around and throw him would gain an advantage.

While capable of displaying explosive strength, Iblis has fairly low battle endurance and doesn't have as much energy for special abilities as some other Angels that we have seen. His arsenal of ranged attacks and special abilities also lacks variety, range, and stopping power in some cases. This can make him very predictable and inflexible against certain circumstances or inefficient against certain materials.

Iblis’ strategy of whittling down his opponent with rapid strikes means that he lacks the heavy blows and knock-out punch of some Angels. He must rely heavily on a furious storm of strikes or precise blows in order to wear his opponents down without giving them an opening to attack or to swiftly end their lives, respectively.

A disruptable five second regeneration time can be a hindrance for one who will be in the forefront of protracted combat and is noticeably slower than some Angels we know. Even with his armor, his thin constitution leaves him more prone to injury and disability as one would expect his lanky body would be.

While he is indeed very aggressive in combat, and packs tons of charisma and wit to be able to get under the skin of just about anyone, Iblis has little in the way of battle strategy and flexibility: he prefers to terrorize, overpower and outmaneuver his opponent as a show of strength over efficiency.

One of his biggest weaknesses (as Asuka could probably attest to) is that he is so overconfident that he tries too hard to cover-up his own insecurities. He is constantly “on the edge” and trying to prove something to his greatest critic: himself. As such, he is so focused on himself that it can be restricting. As he tries to fill the void within himself and destroy the rest of the cosmos, he could be walking into his own demise.

Ironically, even with his special adaptations and in all his attempts to be self-sufficient, another one of his greatest weaknesses is his isolation and inability to effectively engage multiple strong opponents for long. His behavior can attract as much ire as admiration and he may be forced to deal with massive hordes. All of Iblis’ special skills (his dual-layer AT-Field, speed, and telepathy) can be beaten by one who can learn his patterns and counter his assaults, or by a skilled pair who can cooperate well without thinking and survive his attacks.

tl;dr He gives off the impression of being impervious, but enough skill, taking advantage of his physical and emotional flaws, a great partner and some luck would be enough to trump the mighty Iblis.

 Wow. That is amazing.

Iblis. I think I can see him; your idea of using other pictures to demonstrate what you were thinking is ingenious. I like how the advantages and disadvantages give Iblis many holes in his armor that can be taken advantage of, given the opportunity.

His design is well-thought out; something that would arrive out of a year or two of hard work. I am especially impressed with the heat-absorbing coat and Anti-AT-Field Daggers. These two inventions and stand with the religious references, and dictated mental state and personality of Iblis as great pieces of creativity.

Great work, Chowwow!

I wish I could re-edit this and add some tl;dr stuff in the bottom. Is this possible?

Fire/coal imagery and two ATFs are interesting touches, and rather cool.

I'm not too keen on humanoid angels, however, and giving him swords (as opposed to just big claws or something similar that is actually a part of him) makes Iblis seem too eva-like for my tastes.

Damn, it looks like I'll have to postpone this a little longer.

Right now, flatulant is off the grid, and I've found that 3 votes is too narrow.

I'm calling on everyone out there to get off of their asses and help me judge these Designs! Anyone can join - just remember 3 things:

    - I need at most seven Judges.
    - I am automatically disqualified for any awards.
    - Designers who are also Judges are forbidden to vote on their own Design for any award.

The faster we do this, the faster we get done. It's well past summer - we need to get moving!

I'd like to be a judge, but I'm going to need some details. Do I vote for one design for each award?

TAO's design was really cool. What really got me was the notebook pages with scribbles and chicken scratch all over them. It looks like the notebook of some half mad scientist really trying to create a monster.

Of all the Angels I saw in this thread, his was probably the one that was most fleshed out, and the most imagination put into.

I forget who designed it, but the totem pole Angel was pretty cool as well.

I got that vibe too. I appreciate all the effort he made into this, and the sketches look great. This and all of these others are just about the kind of Designs I have been looking for. TAO should have never doubted himself!

*Requim for a Dream song comes on as devil_eAter enters*

Well, hat are my thoughts. There are three in particular I like. Iblis, who I have been discussing with chowwow about for the last year or so. I think his sinister yet not pure evil persona is well established. I think that the AyanamiOtaku's idea was quite the interesting concept actually. I can also see a Sandman quality to him. The other one I was impressed by was the skyscraper angel, simply for design.

On the topic of my own, yes Elfen Lied was a strong influence on him, and he is very anti-Kaworu. I was trying to do an angel sympathetic, and one that many could be unsure where exact;y he would end up in the end. I also wanted there to be a realistic sense of conspiracy in it all. Hopefully I will attain all that as I further create him for a fan fiction
Fred Phelps sucks....
