exactly they were messed up. they just looked really gay. I mean the wings were tight and the swords were sick as fuck, but the heads just ruined them all.

I think their head design was brilliant. Really abnormal and horrendous. The fact they had red, fat lips just made them even more disturbing, not gay by any means

but they didnt even appear remotely eva looking, maybe they werent the worst concept but it could have been so much better in my opinion.

I thought they kinda looked like Giger's aliens, only white and more smoothed out. There definately is something androgynously sexual about them though that creeps me out when they smile.

i suppose thats true, and Shinji did have that weird shower scene with kaworu, and on the mass produced eva's entry plug was kaworu's name. so who knows maybe they were designed to create an odd uneasy sexual feeling.

I think that's what freaked me out a bit. They were unlike any of the other evas. Their mouths really freaked me out when they started feasting on Asuka and her eva. I think they were appropriately disturbing.

That being said, if you were really set on seeing a battle with sleek looking robots, I can see how you could have been disappointed. They were just too disturbing and freaky for me to imagine them being any different. Their look fit perfectly with their 'resurrection' and subsequent 'consumption' of Asuka and her eva. (I couldn't help myself.)

I guess that also works, they were creepy especially when they developed all those Rei faces on their Rei face

The Harpies only remind me of some pervert, erotic, lewd, amorous and insane creatures which produce a lot of saliva, as if they hadn't had any food the week prior to their deployment. SEELE must have been starving them.

Sorry to go off topic, but I'd really like to ask the Harpies how an Eva Unit tastes like. To me it looks like tuna sashimi.

They weren't very cool looking, I'll agree to that, but what they lacked in cool, they made up for in pure creepy weirdness.

Actually, the MP Evas look very Eva-like, sans armor. After all, Evas are humanoids, not mechas. I think the MP Evas were designed (note that whenever I refer to design, I'm talking about the real life artists, not the manufacturers in the movie) to look more feral and more wild than the standard Evas. This is reflected in their actions and mannerisms as well; the hissing noises they make, the pack mentality, and the scavenger-like behavior in the end all give support to this.

So why do the heads look so strange? I think it's to appeal to a more primal level of fear/disgust in people. If your enemy is a massive, machine-like creature, you'll probably think, "Yeah, I'm screwed. Bummer." If it's some monster that's just maniacally grinning at you, there's that deeper fear of "I have no idea what's going to happen. I'm probably going to die horribly, and this thing is going to enjoy every minute of it." Given the choice between having to deal with some deliberate, preprogrammed machine and having to face an unstable, grinning animal, I'd definitely have to go with the former.
