Someone mentioned above that there was a screencap with Ritsuko with brown hair. I remember a while back someone had actually found that cap. Ritsuko actually had the purple hair that Naoko had. And from the distance of the window it did seem a hell of a lot like she was her mother. That was actually one of the things that put the nail in the coffin for me about part of Rei I being in 00.

Rei II seems to have some response to that though (when Shinji says "You'd make a good housewife" or "The way you did that was very motherly"). I was under the impression that these statements were provoking some kind of thought process involving Yui, but I suppose they can simply be due to the fact that people usually dont talk to Rei.

It also could've been an allusion to her nature as mother of everything on Earth.

Id put that down to Rei not knowing how to react to a comment like that not some genetic memory stuff.

How do we know that there is a part of Reis soul in zerogouki ? Id put it down to her being like kawrou but unaware of her abilitys and therefore unable to control them when 00 goes berserk.

To me Rei is a direct representation of Gendo, since he raised her she is exactly what he wants her to be, obediant and silent, yet just like him she lacks social skills.

If there is no genetic memory, then how would Rei know Naoko?

Why wouldn't Rei I know Naoko?

Yea um...Rei II has never mentioned, or made aware, of Naoko in any way. Besides, it's clear she doesn't have genetic memory since she loses memories every time she's cloned, which makes it much more likely, in my opinion, that Rei's memories are electronically backed up with that tube thing, with the alternate benefit of creating the "Rei" personalities for the Dummy Plug.

How the hell did Naoko get linked to Rei II? Seems to me someone made a huge leap for no reason.

Rei is just dying for Naoko's wavy purple locks, you can see it in her eyes.

Three dead mothers, three EVAs and two definite correlations.

We don't, but circumstantial evidence is a hell of a drug.

Where is that at in this thread? I see some talk about genetic memory and why Rei would know Naoko. Assuming Rei II is being referenced I don't see where that would come from. Clearly Rei II isn't part of these beserk fits seeing as EVA-00 is moving without a plug. So where the hell does Rei II knowing Naoko come from? I don't see the relevance.

This is all assuming Lillith's soul has been fragmented between the different Reis as well as Eva 00. What about the soul imprint theory, then? Kyoko continued living after the Eva 02 mishap, and her soul was imprinted but remained intact within her body; she just went crazy. I thought that was a pretty solid assumption. Why would the same not happen with Eva 00? If anything, you'd think the soul of a Seed of Life would be more likely to stay intact than that of a human. Why would Rei I's soul fragment but not Kyoko's?

When Asuka's mother carried out the experiment with the Eva's core, only part of her soul — the maternal component that loves her daughter above all else — remained within Eva Unit-02. This is the reason why she could not recognize her daughter.

So I had to correct my beliefs...unless...wait how do you know that?

Rei 2, #14:
Who is this? This is me.
Who am I? What am I? What am I?
What am I? What am I?
I am myself.
This object is me.
The form that shapes me.
This is the me that can be seen,
yet I feel as though I am not myself.
Very strange.
I feel as if my body is melting.
I can no longer see myself.
My shape is fading.
I feel the presence of someone who is not me.
Is someone there, beyond this?

Rei 1, #25:
Rei 1:
But the real you is somewhere else.
You just don't know it.
Because you don't want to see it.
You're just avoiding it without realizing it.

TEXT:
"Because you're afraid"

Rei 1 (OFF):
Because it may not be human in form.
Because the person that I have been
so far may cease to exist.

Also, Kaworu could control Unit-02 because a, it was "of the same body" as him (i.e. derived from Adam), and b, the soul within the Eva (i.e., Kyoko) had shut herself away; neither of these points were apropos with regard to Rei and Unit-00 (Unit-00 was also Adam-derived, but Rei's soul was Lilith, of course, so "the same body" reasoning doesn't apply...)

I think we need to clarify how souls get "transferred" from one entity to another. If Rei I is killed by Naoko Akagi, how does her "soul" get moved into Zerogouki and retain the memory of being strangled? I had always thought EVA-00 had a separate "Rei soul", one that was never present in Rei I, II or III.
Also, wasn't Yui completely and utterly absorbed into EVA-01, making part of her soul being in Rei an impossibility?

Yui's soul was never in any Rei's. Rei never had a soul of her own, Ritsuko says this in 23. There's no way to clarify the process of soul transferal, since it's pretty much magic; we don't know anything about this. However, it seems at least some memory is carried along with the soul. Kyoko, in EoE, Rei III remembering she's Lilith, etc.

Given how Rei clones are pumped out, NERV seems to have a technology that can transfer souls. Pulling them out of an Evangelion, though, is a bitch.
