I think it seems out-of-context to assume Misato is referring to that. She seems to be clearly talking about Shinji as a "tool" by which to achieve her vendetta. That was my assumption, anyway.

Uh, yeah, Beavis...she was clearly talking about Shinji's...tool.

Damnit guys. :(

Well, whatever the case, Misato is making a comparison between herself and Ritsuko. She says she is as shamless as Ritsuko. So why then would she think that of Ritsuko? Aside from her fling with the commander, she may be cold and analytical, and a bit cynical, but she is by no means shameless.

Carl started it.

Liberal translations cloud your judgment, Monkey! Misato just says "Ritsuko to onaji ka" -- nothing in there about "shameless".

I seriously doubt Misato even knows about the hanky-panky that's going on. That is probably one of Akagi-hakase's best-kept secrets.

Well, so much for the "literal" translation series.

You're still not answering my question Rachel. =P

You're own translation reads "Am I the same as Ritsuko?".

Certainly there is some greater meaning to this. There's a comparison being made. It may have little to do with her relationship with Gendo, but it must mean something.

Actually, "shameless" came from ADV's original DVD subs. They changed it to "I'm just as bad as Ritsuko" for Platinum. LTP has what I eventually stole.

Hah-hah! pwned again!

That's because I was busy pwning j00.

Well, don't look at me. A master of character insight Reichu is not.

I always thought it was a reference to Ritsuko's treatment of Shinji (on their first meeting) as little more than a 'spare battery' for the Eva. 'Course I also thought Misato one of Eva's most glaring hypocrites.

Perhaps when Misato makes the admission that she was viewing Shinji as a tool, she is not readily embracing the meaning the statement holds with regard to her own desire to fill an emotional void. Perhaps that line is to be taken more at face value. While internally that lonelieness and its convenient fix were being presented in her action of taking him in and being all cheery, this environment was headed into (or so she convinced herself) on the basis that maintenance of the boy would be a necessary step in maintaining their operations, giving little thought to what his own needs might be. In that sense, it could be easier to darken the line between Misato taking Shinji into her home as a response to her own lonelieness and taking him in because it might be fun and NERV needs him around anyway. He'd be like a piece of equippment-- living equippment, like a bomb-sniffing dog whom she'd get to feed and buy toys for. With regard to her self-comparison to Ritsuko, I don't believe it has anything to do with their personalities or even their own emotional situations. It concerns the fallacious view that Misato has just become aware of that a child is a no more than a NERV doodad with a stomach and a smile, and having caught herself, she makes the connection between her own behavior and Ritsuko's "it's the only way; let's use him" attitude.

I don't think the actual "Lets eat" comment is important. I think it's Rituko's look after he said it...that's the important part.

Just shows that Ritsuko is getting jeeeealous!

A direct translation from the Japanese version means "Let's go for lunch."

I forgot the exact romanji, but that was what it meant.

I always thought that line was in there to add a little contrast to the scene, along with showing how pissy Ritsuko gets about Rei. It, in my eyes, added dept by foiling such a bizzare, and slightly unnerving, scene as a nake girl in a giant test tube agents an image of something as universal as lunch.
