They did have a relationship but it was a very very very

awkward relationship that often ended with Asuka

calling him an idiot. So how in depth was their relationship?

Because it seemed pretty shallow

Watch director's cuts episode 22 and things get a bit more complicated. I don't have the energy to type anything meaningful right now.

She didn't really love him, she needed him on a very deep level. He needed her too.

Things went pretty bad as the series progressed, but it did started out as your traditional comical romance.

How much did Asuka love Shinji?

Not one bit.

Things got rather distorted near the end of the series. It's not best to use those as examples as everything was F#@ked up.

Need and love have a tendency to get mixed together. This was a very strong theme in EoE "I Need You".

Still the Shinji/Asuka relationship is just too bitter and twisted for it to be called genuine love. On the other hand it was most certainly romentic, even thou it went completly to hell.

I don't think she really loved him in a romantic nor friendly way. Shinji needed her but she did not need him.

I think that's Asuka's quote after the kiss scene.
May have been cut.

Indeed, to that end, I dont belive the movie every said what it belived true love to be.

Shinji needed her but she did not need him.

I dont agree with that, she needed him just as much, IMO.

He's talking about Director's Cuts Episode 22. Watch it, or at least read the scripts at Evaotaku.com.

They did for a long time in Japan. Tehy were actually animated specifically for the home video and laser disk release of EVA. ADV got the rights to translate them so you can buy them when they come out.
