I picked up my copy today; I'd be willing to bet ALL of the Best Buys are selling the DVD early, based on what they show for availability of it on their Web site (all of the stores in my area showed it as "available").

not sure. Then again the cover art for the japanese release wasnt that inspiring. True they feature Shinji and Rei, but that clearly doesnt fit in with what Funimation wants to advertise 1.0 to be. Clearly they wanted something mecha-Eva related, so i guess seeing how they didnt have much to work with they made do with that.

Its kind of true though. If you take a look at the promotional posters and artwork for 1.0 they primarily feature indistinct backgrounds in NERV or the main character cast.

I just hope they dont have this problem with 2.0. perhaps they can use that orange rough sketchy Unit 01 for the 2.0 dvd coverart........

I was wondering if there are any text overlays or on screen translations for 1.01. i recall the on screen stuff being translated, like Misato's picture in the series DVD's, said something like "look at these" or the the toothpick label on the jar when Shinji jumps out of the shower. I recall that stuff being translated on the ADV platinum releases and i was wondering if that's true here?

Yes, there are two "layers" of subtitles on the disc -- the first being signs/writings in Japanese that are useful to the storyline, the second being the regular spoken dialogue.

I haven't looked into this DVD yet because I:
a) Refuse to buy it
b) Am trying to download the ISO for it (PM if you have it please)
but if those screencaps are true, you all should be saving your money for the following reasons.

The film transfer looks like a direct copy from the Japanese 1.01 DVD, which was shitty to begin with, though if I know Funimation, they probably fucked with the telecine and re-encoded the whole film to 30i thus introducing unnecessary artifacts and frames and even increasing the overall bitrate required for visual transparency. Assholes.

The audio is only 5.1ch for both Japanese and English tracks even though the Japanese DVD and Blu-ray Disc (this is how it's spelled, damn it; not "blue rei" or "Blu-Rei" so stop trying to be cute) clearly have 6.1ch Japanese audio for Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS Master Audio. Either that, or it's clearly misleading on the box and menus.

The lack of special features is not uncommon now. Most studios are realizing that low bitrate MPEG-2 looks atrocious when upconverted to 1080i/p. They are now taking the SuperBit approach and leaving the extras on another disc, dropping unwanted audio streams, and leaving the majority of the bitrate for the video track instead of cramming hours worth of extras onto one disc and assuming that "no one has an HDTV yet, so they can't tell the difference" between crap and shit.

It might just be better to burn a disc with the Japanese 1.01 video and audio, add in the subs and English audio, and it will result in a much better version. Again, I'll see what I can get once I get the ISO.

Insightful. I guess calling it blue rei was a bit too much lol. Never thought anyone would be so protective of their HDTV formats.

Where did you get 1.01? All I've seen so far is 1.0 on dvd. Also any word on when 1.11 is going to be released?

I'll probably wait until that gets released , unless their going to be all bad about it and take forever.

1.0 is not on any dvd anywhere, the dvd version is 1.01 in japan, us, and everywhere else.

1.11 comes out IIRC march in dvd and blu ray
