Did you think of the original while viewing? [Spoilers]
Asking out of curiosity:
Were you thinking of the original series while you were watching most of 2.0 or just Rebuild in general?
For me:
To be honest I wasn't thinking of NGE while I was watching most of 1.0 and 2.0. (Which can be considered odd I guess since 1.0 is pretty much 1 through 6 mostly )

I think it's pretty much inevitable for people who've seen the original. I wasn't mentally doing a scene-by-scene comparison or anything, but it's impossible to just erase the plot and characters of the TV series from your mind when watching Rebuild.

I couldn't help but compare 1.0 to NGE, they are extremely similar after all. To be honest though I was pretty blown away with 1.0 and thought that it improved on Ep5 and 6, Rebuild Ramiel was an epic finale compared to the monster-of-the-week feel the original had.
2.0, although I've only seen it once, was pretty different so I only really thought about NGE during the Bardiel and Zeruel scenes. I preferred Rebuild Bardiel to the series, without the whole "OMG DON'T TELL SHINJI IT'S TOJI" stupidity (and making it Asuka this time makes sense), but I like both Zeruel battles on their own merits, the more impressive looking Rebuild scene, and the sheer brutality of NGE's fight.

This is pretty much how it was for me.
I was at least mentally comparing what the 3.0 preview was indicating though: "Okay, so Shinji and Rei being trapped in Eva-01 is a new spin on what we see in Episode 20, and it seems like Mari might be filling in the role of Ritsuko with the Dummy System Reis, but it's hard to say right now.", etc etc.

There's a reason why Lilith was showed during 1.0, right?

I can just picture this scene: Misato's fussing about how they have to get Shinji and Rei out of Unit 01, and the camera cuts to show Shinji and Rei lying naked on top of each other in the entry plug, and Shinji says, "No hurry, guys."

a la final scene in the fifth element? kinda looks like an entry plug
Popped to my head as I happened to watch it a few days ago and then the fifth element avatar theme thing started
I wasn't mentally doing a scene-by-scene comparison or anything
LOL. Thats exactly what i've been doing everytime i watch 1.0 and 2.0. Even when i watched these films for the first time it was inevitable for me to think of the original. True enough at times i was awestruck by the visuals so much that i stopped doing that. But a few seconds later i would usually think to myself.
Wow. How do the old NGE scenes compare to these new rebuild action scenes?
These days everytime i rewatch 1.0 and 2.0 i usually have the scene by scene comparison thing in the back of my mind. Perhaps at a subconscious level if anything.
I wasnt comparing but I do think that the series was adding additional character development for me. It was also cool to see how many series scenes they put in 2.0.
o yea my mistake. Still kinda proves my point though, I was assuming it hadnt been mentioned yet because in NGE we were still in the dark at that point. The line between them can sometimes blur
Kinda hard not to watch rebuild without thinking of NGE. In some instances rebuild plays off the fact that most of the audience has already seen NGE, such as foreshadowing of the battle with Unit-03 and the change of pilots. I mean there is little point to having Toji in the film at all other than to trick the audience into thinking he would be the pilot again.
As awesome as Rebuild Zeruel is it blows hard in comparison to original

Moe does not delight in fanservice but rejoices with the plot. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Moe never fails. But where there are shounen manga, they will cease; where there are deepfags, they will be stilled; where there is analysis, it will pass away. For we HHHNNNGG in part and we UGUU in part, but when the nutbladder breaks, the imperfect disappears."
Well, having seen the television series (and read through evageeks...) and knowing this was a re-take, I couldn't help but always have it in my mind, and be surprised at the changes and new things because I know the original so well. Though, I guess, with scenes like their visit to the aquarium, I did get caught up in just viewing the world of the new film.
I agree that the many fakeouts--such as regarding Touji being a pilot, and eva 01 awakening as of the end of ep19 are surely built up with intentional suspense regarding what the audience thinks will happen next (I'd also put the rei/asuka elavator scene in there too.)

Watching most of You Are (Not) Alone, i will admit was a bit like playing spot the difference for a while. The it just became a case of ranting how incredibly awesome, and more powerful Ramiel is in the rebuild compared to the original. That was a key improvement for me really. Though some parts through me for a loop, like lilith being shown so early.
