The only way I can see S/A happening now is a subtle hint that the two are attracted towards the end, with the implication that with the Angel War over the two will be able to interact in a stable environment. That's pretty much it.

Something like this seems pretty likely to me. Photoshop an eyepatch onto the Asuka ending of GoS, and you've got the ending of 4.0.

Oh you already saw it, their mutual absorption into a god was the fulfillment of that “become one” element ... I can see this happening, since I'm one of those crossing their fingers for a brighter ending.

I sort of believe that Rei will do a little kaworu self sacrifice, leaving a/s up for grabs and out in the open. But nothing too forward just subtle hints.

Didn't Shinji say during the mind-trip on the train that he considers Asuka just a friend? In the translation thread, I remember he said that he was angry that Gendo made him hurt a friend.

On the flip side, during the classroom scene when we have BGM just playing for a good minute straight (Maya going to work, Shinji meeting up with Toji and Kensuke for school, Shinji, Asuka, and Rei at school), Shinji stares at Rei who's looking at the window, then stares at Asuka (after she kicks away the guy hitting on her) longer....

Anyway, just subtle hints wouldn't surprise me. Again, who knows. @_@

And I can’t see a happy reunion with Asuka, but it’s already been set up in that they have to meet again, although it could happen in instrumentality, and it’s very likely that Asuka might identify Shinji as the source of her pain and try to hurt him(ironic in that she seemed to like him before she got raped and crushed) which she certainly would do one way or another, which could be especially damaging if Shinji had somehow lost Rei...I don’t know perhaps a better executed instrumentality(and rematerialization if they decide on it) might be the only way to fix all of them.

But there's a modest chance that Rei and Shinji might not be recovered in Q so would their being dissolved with each other till instrumentality be good enough for you ?

what i'm hoping to see as far as shinji/asuka development in Q is:

a. asuka comes back having been somehow contaminated by bardiel. shinji has to kill her, insert TEH ANGST here. (hey, perhaps we'll get a "GIVE ASUKA BACK!" somewhere in there

notice in asuka's case he can actually scream out her first name because she already gave him permission-- or more like forced him-- to use it).

OR

b. asuka comes back without any contamination, but completely blaming shinji and hating him for almost killing her, insert TEH ANGST here. if this is the case, perhaps we'll get some added "awww, they're so freakin' screwed up but they're kinda cute" scenes here and there, and perhaps even a reconciliation.

either way, i think the S/A issue needs to be at least touched upon. shinji may not have been as "into" asuka as he was in NGE, but the triangle was there and it was perhaps even more obvious than in NGE, at least from the girls' corners.

rei's message on asuka's phone particularly comes to mind when i think about this-- asuka knew rei has a thing for shinji. she could've chosen to sit bardiel's activation test out and in doing so she would've indirectly messed up rei's dinner party plans. she chooses EVA, and rei thanks her for it. however, given that she's obviously jealous or the whole shinji/rei thing, it was either: a. she decided to let shinji have his happiness and his dinner with his father (she did talk about such a topic with misato) or b. she's just typical asuka putting EVA over everything else.

since she finds herself smiling in the entry plug (and the whole talk with misato), i'd go with option a. and i hardly think she chose EVA for rei's sake, so it's gotta be shinji... (eh, at least that's how i interpreted that part of the movie. i could be wrong). and with the possibility of bardiel and her almost dying being either a huge step back or a huge step forward in their relationship, i think we shouldn't count their potential as being completely gone.

(also, i have the sinking sensation that rei is either going to bite the bullet or go all mother of all humanity on us pretty soon, which would bring R/S to an abrupt end. not that it wasn't cute).

(and hmmm. kaworu/asuka definitely sounds interesting. why had i never thought about that before?)

BTW, synapsid-- i approve of that antifreeze analogy. You have my approval!

But, the difference is that Shinji says outloud that he considers Asuka a friend. Not anything else, but a friend. Its different from EOE where Shinji says that he wants to be with Asuka forever. Its simple to see that he likes her in a romantic sense. In Rebuild, however, Shinji just calls Asuka a friend. Thats way different than what he said in EOE.

I know that Shinji cares about Rei, but there hasn't been any hint to how he cares about her. Does he like her as a friend or something more?

The Shinji/Asuka pairing is as of now bleak. The Shinji/Rei pairing is somehow a bit better, I am using the end of 2.0 as reference to my claims.
