We say this a lot, glibly; but actually, the other angels, while powerful, don't show any such extreme mysterious powers. As it's only Kaworu and Rei that seem to have the power to transcend time in some way, perhaps we should ascribe that ability to their being seeds (in part) rather than angels.

But on topic, merely having the last film will provide the answers required; anything which is not answered will by definition be something that doesn't matter - though that won't stop us arguing about it here for the next decade!

Strangely enough, we’ve yet to see either Mari’s tits or ass in the nude. Now Rei, on the other hand, has hers displayed prominently in 1.11. In that context, I can’t even argue that Mari’s purpose was shameless T&A. I mean, if that was her purpose, you’d think that she’d actually display them shamelessly to the viewer (or to even any character in the film) at one point, right?

To solidify my point, I’ll give $1,000 USD to anyone who can screen cap either Mari's nipples or her bare buns from 1.11, 2.22, or 3.33. And I’m not even joking. Dead serious. If someone can show me legit Mari naughty bits from the first three Anno-directed NTE film, that person gets money. Internet, GO! (The closest I’ve got was an unused up-skirt panty-shot meant for the preview at the end of 1.11. Despite anyone’s claims, Studio Khara actually seems very protective over Mari’s body. Fan art, on the other hand... not so much.)

Fair enough. Kaworu is a lot less unaware than Rei that his powers are beyond human comprehension, what also explains, why he talks in such a cryptic way. Rei being a lot more "socialised", and aware of what is "normal" and not does know what she can talk about and what not. Also she likes to talk a lot less, so...

Shameless was a bit much, I concede. What I was getting at is it seems T&A appeal was the only reason she was thrown into Eva. I have no reason to believe she exists for anything other than doujin material and to deprive characters I actually care about of screen time.

It's not just that, at least in NGE he was even more quirky, but there was a progression of him getting attached to Shinji and choosing to let the Lilin have the Earth, thanks to the time he passed with Shinji and discovering what the Lilins have achieved.

But here in NTE it came absolutely out of nowhere, to the point that Kaworu is reduced to a mere satellite character to Shinji, even dropping any indication that he admires the rest of mankind except an offhand comment that he likes piano.

Other than NTE First Impact, it seems to be roughly 14-15 years between each one. 2nd Impact's about 15 years before 1.0/2.0, Near-Third in 2.0, aborted 4th is 14 years after 2.0's Near-Third...
