I'm having a really hard time understanding why they failed to see the obvious, because a LOT of Fury Road was obvious.

SPOILER: Show
Like...run a hundred plus days over salt flats in the slim hope that there MIGHT be something better on the other side...probably...

Or turn around, use the MASSIVE FRIGGING WAR RIG you have to your way back to the safety of the Citadel where you know there's water. It's kind of a no brainer to me.
Though, Gob still might look good in a cocktail dress.

Up until the ending sequence I thought I'd finally seen a good feminist movie for once, with all parts balanced and archetypal story treated with needed respect, but I fail to see why so much feminist-driven stories end up with all supporting male cast* either dead by self-sacrifice or stepping into the side vanishing in the oblivion (not to mention those male species villanous or treacherous enough to be outcast either before so). Feels more convenient (and insulting) than substantial.

The film is absolutely brilliant, though.

* - crowds in the end not counted, since they're treated as a formless "demos" and male presence there is diluted by this, not to mention them becoming only children to our Mother pack of heroes, not equal in terms of symbolism.

^Well, to be fair Max usually leaves the rest of the cast after the end of each movie so in this case it was mostly par for the course.

This was a good movie. I left the theater thinking about it for days afterwards - in 2 words, not forgettable, like so much stuff that comes out these days.

I've been a Mad Max fan for years, though. "Show, don't tell" is something I miss from movies which seemed to be there more when I was a kid, it's like most directors have forgotten how to do this (or they don't teach it at 'film school' no more??) and newer generations haven't had it so this movie is amazing to them. Sure, it had a few tiny flaws but the main thing was that it stuck to the win formula for storytelling:

a) Don't be boring
b) Don't be confusing
c) Good action and nice visuals never goes amiss
d) The action serves the plot.

Win.

Wow, this movie wasn't on my radar at all, since I thought this was just another boring CGI bombast Hollywood movie. So I have to thank you for the heads up, I've finally watched it on the big screen and it was nothing short of gorgeously awesome. This and Whiplash are the best movies I've seen this year by a far margin.

I'm still pretty mad that derivative, mass-produced, soulless crap like Avengers 2 and Pitch Perfect 2 made more money than Fury Road. People complain about why movies like this don't get made anymore and they're the reason why.

^To be fair, those movies have the advantage in that they can shovel their generic brand of pap to children as well as adults. Fury Road isn't able to do that.

Not that it matters but in worldwide sales Mad Max has beaten Pitch Perfect 2.

Well, it's not like FR was a flop or anything; it made $346 million, which is quite respectable (and got a sequel greenlit). I agree it's a pity it didn't make more, though.

It's more the principle of wanting genuinely good movies to do better than all the generic "money makers" produced. I want more movies like Fury Road, sequels are good and all but I was hoping it'd change the way action movies are made these days.

^
Rant incoming (i hate tumblr)
SPOILER: Show
Something about that tumblr-rhetoric rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's that constant flipping between know-it-all and self-deprecating.

Well nevermind, because that person clearly has trouble perceiving what actually is going in the movie, due to a too heavy filter of tumblr-feminism in perception. This person argues, that they are lesbians and how great it is, while it does no matter in the context of the movie. Of course they would comfort each other, because they are part of a closed-off culture, wildly different than the rest of the people there. They are not the hardboiled fighting-machines all the other characters are, because they've lived a sheltered life up until this point. There's no suggestion that only those two had sexy time with each other, in fact it would make more sense for all five of them engaging in sexy time with each other.
So, so what.
Why is that important?
It is not.

Who said it was important? And why does noticing it deserve a rant? You're getting worked up over nothing.

Nobody said it was important, just that it was a small thing hence why i called it that.
Its not like tumblr is trying to make some grand statement about how mad max is somehow racist (which as stated before i have seen tumblr do) someone who uses tumblr just noticed a small thing in this movie and decided to share it.

You're right, I overreacted. I really need to identify what it is about the tumblr-rhetoric, that annoys me so much that I feel the need to start ranting, lol.

On another note, I've watched the movie in 2D, next week I'll be going to watch it in 3D. Looking forward to it.

Well, here is my review of Mad Max. Fair warning that it goes a bit agaisnt the grain though. Posting it here because i'm interested to see if someone can change my mind on the film. Sorry if my "review" seems a bit too broad-stroked/vague, but i just couldn't be bothered writing much about a film that didn't really stir my heart that much. Pls no bully and stuff

I'm not sure what you mean there to be honest, the way i saw Fury Road was exactly like the typical blockbuster to the core.

On the subject of Mad Max, I've been reading conflicting reports about how financially successful it was. The raw numbers are that it made $367 million on a $150 million budget (not accounting for marketing).
However, I've seen some sources say that it was a financial disappointment, and others call it a moderate success. Who do I believe?

Hollywood accounting is a joke, firstly. I wouldn't dare tread those waters, especially since even the executives don't even know what's going on there.

Secondly, if there is any sense to be made out of this it's that it ultimately makes no sense. Hollywood producers are more concerned with which movie came out "on top" in the box office that weekend. This means how many tickets were sold that weekend, not how large a film's profit margin actually was. Some might call Mad Max a financial let down simply because it didn't beat out Pitch Perfect 2 on it's opening weekend in ticket sales. That's the #1 concern to a lot of producers. Actual profit margin comes second, and is usually achieved second anyway, since a lot of the movies cost far, far more than their production budget to actually produce, market, and distribute.

For example, The Avengers had to break over $1 Billion before it could really be considered a financial success, but that didn't stop everyone from saying that it was "winning" in the box office on its opening day despite making only a little over half its costs ($623,357,910) on the first weekend, with ticket sales quickly dropping after the first 2 or 3 weeks, and more and more of the ticket earnings begin to go to the theater itself after the first weekend. If "winning" is making only half your money back with a sharp decline in both sales and percentage of profits the more time goes by, then it's "winning" only by Charlie Sheen standards.

As for Mad Max, I have no idea what it's total cost was. So I have no idea if it made a profit faster than other movies despite its lower ticket sales. But at least you now know why everyone talks two different ways about a film's "success."
