Oh, I know about those games. It's not so much that I think there's a lack of games. I'd just like some KlK action on a Nintendo console. xD

I wouldn't be so sure. ;) Kamiya is working on a XBox One exclusive.

Hard to recognize her without the red stripe of hair, although its still of a different color here.
Still I love not!Ryouko's face here, she's like "what the hell is happening and how the hell did I ended here!?"

My brutally honest opinions on it is that its pretty bad. The fights bore me, the plot is laughably bad, Mako is the worst thing to happen to comic relief ever, and characters are 2 dimensional and flat.

Usually I really enjoy hyper-stylized action but this just disgusts me.

I really liked the first few episodes of Kill la Kill. I thought it was sort of like Revolutionary Girl Utena if it were made by Go Nagai. Despite the breakneck speed of the animation, the plot progressed rather slowly. It did a good job of creating the illusion that it was a fast-paced TV show, but really the whole story stretched out longer than it should have and, like the X TV series, it spent too much time on distractions from the main plot. At least the pacing wasn't as bad as something like DBZ.

I prefer it over TTGL. But they're both similar shows. TTGL is Studio Trigger's (while they were still part of Gainax) tribute to the mecha genre, specifically the pre-Evangelion era. It hits all the same beats as those old shows, while attempting to cure the post-modern blues that Evangelion left in its wake. Unfortunately, they tried to do this with a pseudo-revival of retro mecha, rather than creating a greater work that embraces and builds upon the ideas of its predecessors. It's a fun show, but I've never really been a fan of the classic super-robot genre to which it is a love letter to.

KLK on the other hand is a shounen show, except with the twist that it's female-centric. It plays out just like a shounen, in terms of style, but it also has that meta element to it where you feel that it's inspired by old shounen shows while also trying out some new ideas. My suspicions were pretty much confirmed when Ryuko transformed into a super saiyan for no apparent reason in the final battle. Was there ever a female super saiyan? The way I see it, it ends with the acceptance and revering of women in a genre that's been locked around empowering young boys and where girls often were and still are marginalized.

I think KLK (and TTGL) are good shows. Just not great shows.

Kill la Kill was a fun ride, especially in tandem with this thread. A few years down the line I'll rewatch it, and see, if it can stand on its own without the hype surrounding it.
For now I hope, another show I follow will have the same amount of hype surrounding it someday. So that I can have the same lovely experience again; Watching Anime with passionate people on this forum! ^_^

Yeah, Episode 1 and 2 fights weren't spectacular.

Episode 3, though...

Fair enough. I really, really liked it, but I can agree with a lot of what you say. The plot really only came into it in the second half; before then, the plot "threads" that received disappointing development/explanation carried the show along nicely. Everything past the explanation of what Life Fibres were was decent at best, and the only reason I gave it that generosity is because of how much I did like the show and the characters.

Mako did grate, but I thought she was generally good if not great.

I thought Kill la Kill had a much better grasp of hype and energy than it did actually creating enthralling fight scenes. The final battle in space just sucked, and the only reason I enjoyed most of the others were because of the story they were developing. Episode 6 (Ryuuko vs. Sanageyama, rounds 1 and 2) was one of my favourites, but it had nothing to do with how exciting it was to see the clone tool in whatever they were using to animate the show abused or shinai flying acrross the screen without actually conveying the sense of speed or ferocity. If it weren't for the great direction, many of the show's fights – or its animation in general – would bore rather than suffice.

That said, I did think the show had some really good points (the characters' stories and development, most of the humour and at least some of the drama, and the show had a legitimate ability to draw you into its world). I can't in honesty rate Kill la Kill higher than a 6/10, but my personal enjoyment was much more than that.

I liked the moments when the show was just absurdly funny and the 20-30 moments of brilliant animation scattered throughout the show.

I could have done without the numerous animations that looked like they were done in Flash, and I wish the second half of the show had developed better. I ended up really enjoying my first watch of it, but even then there were feelings of disappointment. Overall, I think it was more entertaining that TTGL, but I can also appreciate that TTGL looks deeper into the idea of human ambition.

In the end, I wish that Kill la Kill had been done with a better budget. If the great action animations were nonstop, I would have no problem giving it a 8 or 9 and jumping on the hype train. I'm still interested to see what Trigger does in the near future.

For me, the ranking is:

FLCL
Diebuster
KlK
TTGL
Dead Leaves
"The will to lose one's will?"
"Absolutely. The will to make oneself completely free. Will is the wrong word, because in the end you could call it despair. Because it really comes out of an absolute feeling of it's impossible to do these things, so I might as well just do anything. And out of this anything, one sees what happens."--Francis Bacon

Kill la Kill is good but it didn't 'save' anime as much as the meme says it did. Mako is fun for the first few episodes but then she got annoying later.
