[Promiting this to a separate sticky -- the main rec thread is a "push" (you should watch this), this is more "pull" -- Tines]

I'm looking for a new anime series to watch, I've seen enough anime films lately so I wanna sink my teeth into a good series.

Series I have watched so far:

Evangelion (duh...)
Cowboy Bepop (although I found it a tad heavy on the filler)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Hellsing
Serial Experiments Lain
Elfen Lied

Based on these, what anime should I watch next? I'm into deep psychological types of anime, and not ones that are heavy on action or 'slice of life'. thanks.

Mouryou no Hako was too weird for my tastes - but funnily enough, I liked Utena which was very weird as well. And I mean most of Utena has weirdness that rivals End of Evangelion.

Since we don't have an MnH general thread :sniffle: I'll ask it here -- what would you say was weird about a murder mystery set in the immediate post-war years and involving a little bit of pulp SCIENCE! for colour?

Haibane Renmei - It'll seem somewhat slice of life at first, but stick with it and you'll see it meets the deep psychological criteria. Like Eva, it goes in-depth into the downward spiral of depression.
Flowers of Evil (Aku no Hana) - A psychological thriller about teenage alienation.
Welcome to the NHK - A psychological drama mixed in with some dark comedy about an agoraphobic shut-in.

Yes. Also don't forget Lain if you liked the wicked, philosophical aspect of Eva, Nia under 7 for slice of life done good and pervading narrowing melancholy, and Texhnolyze for the hardest smack into your face and eradicating every positive emotion leaving only a pervading void while being extremely addicting.

Yes, but read the Manga if you wish an ending, I doubt this Anime will get a continuation.

If we're going for a slightly wider range than the OP asked for, I'll add

Now and then, here and there.

Don't be fooled by the jolly start and the mediocre art - this is a real hard-hitter, and some people find it tough to watch at all once it gets going. Torture, child soldiers, mass killings...

Together with Arjuna it's also the only proper pro-life anime I'm aware of! :toothy:

Don't get me wrong I found Now and then, here and there to be very good, but I heard so many things about it, that the end product couldn't shock me as much as it probably should have.

I second Angel's Egg. A largely overlooked masterpiece from Oshii with an incredible score. Do give both Patlabor Movies 1 & 2 a go as well. Then check out Jin-Roh and GitS. (all preferably in HD.)

As for TV/OVA series:

Outlaw Star
Iria: Zeiram the Animation
Berserk
Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor
Monster
Black Jack
City Hunter

Well, somebody's a Yoshitoshi ABe fan. -o-;

Being one myself, I guess I should probably watch Nia after all. I kind of overlooked it since it seemed to be so much more, well, lighthearted than his usual stuff, but if it still contains some of his melancholic touch, I'll probably be more inclined to give it a shot one day.

I've seen Angel's Egg, it's wonderful and among my favorite anime films (which include Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Metropolis, Animatrix, Girl Who Leapt Through Time and basically everything Studio Ghibli).

If you have any other anime film recommendations, post em'; looking to expand my collection.

Also in terms of series, my friend keeps trying to push a series called When They Cry on me - is it any good, and is it like any of the series mentioned in my OP?.

Monster is a really good rec. Psychological thriller type show. I think you'd dig it.

Monster is awesome, and it has a truly diabolical villain to boot.

The heads in the box and the dismembered body parts creeped the hell out of me.

However, come to think of it, it was a while, so I might give it a rewatch and see it makes more sense post-Utena.

Watch 5 Episodes, either you're hooked or you're not. But don't drop it after only one Episode.
