The only boxset I have is the X-mass set and from what I have seen it's no different then the Platinum Perfect Collection.

price wise it would have to be the holiday platinum collection. i got mine for only $79.99. the cover art ain't that bad either, and they had a two part documentry entitled, "the mythology of evangelion", which was an analysis of the deep meaning of the TV series.

I have the thinpak barebones version (platinum complete) and there is one area that I was glad to have bought this version: Instead of 21-23 TV DC on one disc and 24 TV DC, 25 and 26 on the other disc, the Barebones actually is presented differently: 21-26 TV and 21-24 DC. That way, I don't have to look at the TV versions at all and just focus on the DC. Plus, the first 20 episodes are organized as 5 episodes on 4 discs, instead of 1-5/6-10/11-14/15-17/18-20. Though I don't have extras, that is fine for me, as I could find out information myself online. Good Job, ADV (now in smaller companies no longer called ADV) :ting:

I actually got this for 3 dollars more than your price. Again, a good buy.

Yes, that's the real authentic "Renewal Box", but, unfortunately, only in Japanese. (would be nice for me to have one of those.)

Ultimate Tin Box Collection vs Platinum Collection

Reason I'm asking is cheaper price of Ultimate Tin Box Collection despite its hugeness... which makes me suspect there's something fishy going on

I have both. The one in the tin just has all the ADV extras that came on the individual volumes. The regular thinpack set is missing all those. The tin is called "platinum perfect set". I don't know why it's cheaper, I suspect it's because ADV stopped manufacturing the regular thinpack set for a little while & replaced it with the tin version.

EDIT
Weird. Product description says your tin comes with special booklet that was absent from my release. Not really important in the grand scheme of things, but still interesting.

I got the same kinda deal. Bought a "Used - Very Good" copy on Amazon for $40ish, advertised as having a few dents. What I got in the mail was actually still in the shrinkwrap, and the "small dents" were simply from the tin sitting on the shelf at a store for a while.

Yes, if you own the Holiday box set then their is no point on owning the same series on DVD that you already own. I find it to be a waste of money.
