The most interesting is trying to guess what Rei would watch, since entertainment isn't really her thing. I think she'd go for movies like The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser and The Seventh Seal. The Island would be perfect for her (since it deals with expendable clones).

I still maintain that the rest of them would all go for porn, except for Pen Pen, he'd watch March of the Penguins.

Speaking of Shinji relating to films with fish-out-of-water protagonists and Asuka going for action heroines... Asuka and Shinji bonding over Iron Sky, anyone?

Also, Kensuke would obviously be a huge fan of Gundam UC, especially CCA with its "impending cataclysm about to wipe out everything if the bad guys win" theme mirroring the pre-3I Evaverse.

It's funny. People keep talking about Asuka as though she's some sort of action girl, but in the actual show I don't think that's true. She never has any interest in Eva outside of the prestige it affords her, she things sync tests are boring, she reads fashion magazines and plays video games and watches soap operas . . . where's the action girl again? Apart from going on about being the best pilot and being a babe she seems like a stereotypical geek to me.

Mari's actually a good contrast here. Now she's an action girl. She loves piloting, hungers for Eva even when she isn't piloting, does things like parachuting into cities to avoid detection (however that works) . . . action girl through and through. Asuka's just a mousy little homebody by compare! Not serious about that last bit, but still.

Mari - any Tarantino movie. Even the "Grindhouse" duo.

Aoba - "Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny" or "This Is Spinal Tap".

Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Not sure how reading fashion magazines and watching soaps qualifies her as a stereotypical geek. Those are two extremely anti geek things.

You're right, geek was the wrong word (it does apply to Shikinami, though). Call her a girly girl or a homebody instead, albeit one wearing a vicious mask to keep other people at a safe distance. The one thing she's not is an action girl, since she doesn't really seem to want to do anything.

I'd really like to sit the cast down and see their reactions to Solaris.

I'm not sure that Rei indulges in entertainment as such -- just look at her living arrangements. Or even much in the way of people watching. Whatever catches her attention would be unpredictable, as likely to be things that are very childish as experimental and outre.

Asuka would take a steady diet of chick-flicks.

Shinji would definitely be into Brazil.

And speaking of 80's movies, I can just imagine Asuka spending her free time wishing Shinji was taken away by the Goblin King.

It's actually a fairly common thing to not want to do anything and still imagine oneself in an action role as a fantasy, especially as a teenager. Enjoyment of a fictional genre and even fantasizing about the genre (the qualifier I gave for Asuka) does not equal a want to actually be in the genre. For example, I like post-apocalyptic settings, but I hope to God that I never have to live in one.

As I said, for Asuka it would likely be a glory fantasy, since she is consumed with greater recognition and glory for herself (she was manipulated into this, but it's still there). It's not that she might particularly enjoy the action movie in its own right, but she enjoys imagining herself getting the glory the main character does.

I can see the logic behind your rationalization, but to me it doesn't stand up. Your rationalization somehow seems incomplete.

But she doesn't. She watches soaps and fantasizes about romancing Kaji and getting taken seriously as an adult. This is what we're shown onscreen. It's of course possible she fantasizes about all sorts of other things, but if you wanna talk about what's likely we have to run with what we're given. In Asuka's case that ain't action girl by any means.
