Is Shinji a "pretty boy"?

Well, I don't even know what a pretty boy is. But I've seen people who are called pretty boys, people who call themselves pretty boys, and... other people who aren't called pretty and don't think of themselves as pretty but nonetheless would be seen as a pretty boy by... someone.

If episode 5 is anything to go by, the girls at his school seem to like him. (The fact that several female protagonists may or may not want to ride his joystick should be taken into account as well.)

He may not be narcissistic but Shinji definately is a pretty boy.

Shinji definately dresses better than his friends. The neat freak in him means he almost certainly has not only clean but ironed clothes every day. I'd assume that he also is rather fastidious about his hygiene. As to just raw looks, all you need to see is his windblown look in ep4 to get that he's a bishi.

A polite, well groomed, potential hero with a tragic past from a powerful family... if he looked up from his navel occasionally he'd have been the king of that school.

If I were a girl (I have a penis) I would say Shinji would look kinda cute (I'm still a male, in case you've forgotten) considering his quiet personality...and style. Come on, you gotta admit, the clothes he wears are pretty damn cute-looking.

He may be "pretty" by all standards, but he's no where near a "pretty boy". Being a "pretty boy" is more like being a meterosexual, and Shinji isn't going to far lengths like getting manicures or wearing makeup to make himself look pretty. He cares about how he looks, but to an extent which doesn't make him a "pretty boy". And even his OCD nature wouldn't come close to making him one.

I did that as well at the New York Anime Festival but hardly anyone knew who I was. If I had my Asuka or Kaworu with me then it would have been easier. Wish I had my plug suit with me...Cant wait till I start my new one! Going to be so much better.

**fun fact: the character design for Shinji is literally, taking the head of the female character Nadia from Gainax's earlier series, "Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water", cutting her bangs short, and slapping it onto a male body.

Nadia was also dark-skinned so they changed that too; but otherwise, they literally took a girl's head, minus the jewelry and shortened the hair a bit. He thus still has a proportionately longer neck, and overall effeminate look.

This was not done to make him a "pretty boy", so much as part of the overall theme of emasculating him; making him as un-masculine as possible; this is part of showing how he's a failure at pretty much everything (he's not tough like he should be)

The dark salmon top? It's technically pink, yeah, but that particular shade is considered "acceptable" for standard male wardrobe, AFAIK.

@ Reichu: Not just "because you said so" but he certainly LOOKS like a bishounen. Personality-wise, I really can't recall if anime pretty boys act a certain way or not, but I do think Shinji fits the bill even if he doesn't act like the norm.
