I'm the other way... 1 bored me, 2 burned me, but 3 is so crazy that I just don't have a clue what might be coming.

I was happy with 1.0 and rather disappointed with the way 2.0 went although not to the point of outright hatred. 3.0 made me think the series had jumped the shark at first - seriously, 14-year timeskip, flying giant battleship, "Nemesis series", the world utterly devastated, Fourth Impact and all the like without any explanation for what happened in the intervening years or anything we'd seen in the trailer?

However, my opinion of 3.0 has changed altogether and I now think it's the strongest entry in the franchise so far, because it is genuinely new and it deals with something that neither the original series nor EoE dealt with - the consequences of Shinji causing Third Impact or the kind of world that would exist after such an event.

Well, she's not tsundere, so that helps.

As to the topic, I had serious issues with the new movies for awhile, but the hate for them (and for Q in particular) forced me to re-examine my reasoning and I ultimately came to appreciate them for what they are. They don't come close to the original series for me, but as their own thing I'm willing to accept them and whatever Final brings us.

Hard outside exterior, soft inside interior? It's good for a character to not be a total bitch, it'd make them totally irredeemable if they were.

The original is such a tough act to follow that it's almost inevitable for rebuild to be considered inferior. But that doesn't mean we can't still enjoy them on their own terms

I flip flop on my opinion regarding the fanbase in general. Sometimes I think the diehard Eva fanbase is made up of some of the most well opinionated, informed & classy geeks a sci-fi series could ask for.

Other times..... not so much.

Thankfully the Eva fanbase is mostly great in general.

Depends whether you consider Soryu and Shikinami the same character or not.

Soryu I would happily stuff into a barrel and roll into the sea. Shikinami, on the other hand… Let’s just say seeing her reappear at the beginning of 3.33, complete with Eyepatch of Awesome, made for a very happy Sadako.

To be honest, my feelings about the show as a whole go along the same lines. I didn’t really like NGE when it first came out. The Rebuild movies, on the other hand, I’m completely smitten by. Especially 3.33.

While it's not a very positive change of heart, I used to feel really really bad for Asuka, but then when I rewatched NGE and realized how horribly bitchy she was, I ended up sympathizing with Shinji much more. I think the shock of what happened in Episode 22 and End of Eva made me forget about that aspect of Asuka at first.

Same episode & character, though likely a different scene and epiphany.

Towards the end of the episode, where Asuka is looking on, horrified, by the display EVA-01 made tearing Leliel apart.

That moment made me realize that standard harem rules were not to apply in this series, and that Asuka herself had more on her mind than just the MC.

It's words like this that make me keep putting it off. That and the thought of, if I watch it, I'll have no more new Evangelion to watch. At least until FINAL comes out.

I've put completing Star Trek DS9 on a slow burn for similar reasons. And M*A*S*H, and Detective Conan, and the Harry Potter fil-- na wait, I just grew bored and dropped those last two.

Yes; it was the locker room scene after the "You are Number One!", and the thought that they hadn't even left her her particular schtick. Having transitioned from dubs to subs around the middle of the series may also have had something to do with it; on rewatching, Miyamura's early Asuka wasn't anywhere near the turbo-bitch that Grant's came over as.

Ah, that explains it; I can never understand why people call Asuka bitchy, just as I can never understand why they call Shinji wimpy or annoying, but then again I don't think I've ever watched the show all the way through dubbed. The original, subtitled version is a very different beast.

Not really; along with all but abandoning the Rebuild sub-forum these past three years (so I wouldn't have observed what you're talking about) I've been focusing on forgetting the "spoilers" I've been exposed to up till now, so that when I finally do watch 3.0 or 3.33, I'll be at least halfway surprised, rather than idly counting down until something I know is coming up, does.

Pretty much all of 3.0. At first I thought it was confusing and disjointed. But the more i thought about it, the more I realized it was confusing and disjointed for a reason. After all, the whole thing is seen from Shinji's perspective, and he's just spent the past 14 years in a coma, so the events of the movie make just as little sense to him as they do to us, the viewers.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

I found Rei inhuman and disturbing on my initial viewing and now find her enormously sympathetic. I actually prefer the Rebuild version, she feels deeper and sadder.
