Neo Genesis Evangelion is a complicated and controversial anime.
Personally I did not like it! And I'm not just talking about the final. All the story was too heavy for my taste! Materialally and psychologically. And I did not like the religious references either!
So I devised an alternative plot with a crossover:
<< Future. Humanity has adapted itself to living in a fortress town like that of Neo Tokyo-3, to defend itself against the attacks of giant space monsters called ironically "Angels." To counter the threat, a paramilitary organization called "Nerv" was established, commanded by Gendō Ikari, which has its own base in Neo Tokyo-3, and powerful mecha called "Eve" was built to fight these monsters.
The fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari, after spending ten years separating from his father Gendō, goes to Neo Tokyo-3, having been chosen as the Eva-01 pilot on board Angels as Third Children. Shinji moved to his new home, Misato Katsuragi, with his colleagues Rei Ayanami, Eva-00 pilot, and Asuka Sōryū Langley, Eva-02 pilot, and after a difficult start friendship with them who both fall in love with him!
During the clash with the 12th Angel, Shinji falls to the sea and is retrieved by a warship of the "Mitril" organization set up to stop the advent of Revelation. On board the captain reveals that Father Gendō is actually the Antichrist, and he fought the Angels just waiting for the 13th, with which he wants to merge to conquer the world! Shinji does not believe him, and thanks to Asuka's intervention he can get back to the base. But then, when the 13th Angel appears, his father shows up for what he really is! Shinji intercedes between the father and the angel preventing the fusion. But the Angel blends with Shinji and Eve turns into a terrible demon moving to the coast! The Mitril fleet begins to bomb the monster heavily, but without results! Finally, Asuka puts her voice and can awaken Shinji from the monster's body. The boy, still inside the demon, asks for help. And at that moment, Christ appears, destroying the monster and establishing his 1,000-year-old utopian kingdom! Shinji can now live a quiet life with her girlfriend Asuka. >>

From his DA, the artist seems to be a very religious man, from Italy, with a nostalgia for the Italian Kingdom and also fan of Disney. In fact in many of his artworks, Mickey and Co. seems to be stand-ins for the USA, in others you have Tintin as a stand-in for France (even thought the character is Belgian)

My bet is on LSD or 2CB, cause those play very much with your psyche and mood. And for someone like Asuka and Rei, those drugs would be the closest experience to Instrumentality without to dissolve in primordial soup.

You guys really need to read the spin off mangas as they show in the right setting Rei and Asuka can be very good friends in a less stressful universe Its also hinted that there possibly more in the campus apocalypse manga.
