It's been a while since I last posted here...

Well, we all know that if Shinji had a chance to visit a psychological health specialist he would be diagnosed with depression. But what specific kind of depression Shinji suffers from?

- Major Depression
- Dysthymia
- Atypical Depression
- Psychotic Depression
- Bipolar Disorder
- Situational Depression
- Organic Depression
- Nervous Dperession
- Manic Depression

Which one would Shinji be diagnosed with?
I've got nothing better to do, so I have registered myself here!

My first thought is to wonder whether he is actually depicted sufficiently consistently in any case; that may depend on our diagnosis of course. (And some of your options are the same, BTW)

Before arriving to Tokyo-3, I would say he's just gloomy and in need of a hug, then from here I would massive PTSD piled one upon the other until a complete mental breakdown happens in EoE.

I don't know how much I am like Shinji as a person, Shinji's depression is the closest depiction to mine I have ever seen. There are even aspects I would never have publicly admitted to had I not seen Eva.

I guess that's somewhat right. But personality disorders shouldn't be diagnosed in minors. 14 is way too young to determine that.
Any psychiatrist would consider watching you mum vanishing inside some big monster call a trauma. So I'd diagnose him with some trauma related chronic depression or something familiar.

Same. That feeling that you are unneeded and better off left alone, I know exactly what that's like. One moment that really sticks out is that short scene in Episode 16 when Shinji is riding the bus. He finally feels proud of himself and somewhat happy but then he looks up and sees that a pair of boys are laugh at him. Little things like that don't seem like much from the outside, especially if you have thick skin, but if you're already in a place where you're constantly doubting yourself, that moment of embarrassment just feeds your inner depression.

I know psychiatrists who feel they shouldn't be diagnosed, period. But I responded to the question asked, so.

I think age doesn't matter with fictional characters (unless the work makes it matter).
But to me the characters never seemed like 14 year old. I think Anno doesn't remember that time too well. They seem a little older.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

That's a common problem with a lot of anime though. It's the same with Sailor Moon, where the characters are 14 when they look and act closer to 16 or maybe even 17.
