To the moon you should fly myself only.
Hey, I couldn't find anything with a quick search over the web or evageeks, respectively. But if there is such a thread already, have my humblest apologies and close this one immediately.
I have come to ask myself, WHY fly me to the moon. Has there ever been made a statement about why they chose this song? I mean, they could have gone with What's up by the 4 non Blonds, but no, they chose Fly me to the Moon...
So, if anybody knows, I would appreciate an answer :)

Straight to the moon, I say! BD
^There's always the Rei = the Moon symbolism, and the English = Cool factor, which was probably even stronger in the-mid 90's.
If the creators we're really on their game with this, it may have even be for the "translation" angle, the narrator says one thing, but really means another. Sure is plenty of that going on within the series.

What I would like to know is why there are so many versions of the song. Did it really become that popular?

I have an idea: at the end of 4.0, if Third Impact has been averted, play it in the background during a party.
Throw in a drunken Misato shouting "OMEDETOU!" too.

It could have been played when Gendo and Fuyutsuki go to Tabgha Base.

oh I like this game name random songs that don't really fit, Breakdown by the Alan Parsons Project would be a better fit then What's up.
Moon relationships aside, Fly me to the moon has a more subdued tone then the upbeat opening A Cruel Angel's Thesis, so it balances out the opening and ending themes.

Not so much "planned" as "tentatively proposed". :p And they ultimately did make things called "moons" pretty damned pivotal.

The idea remained floating around for almost two decades though, considering the revival of the moon in both NME and Anima; I wonder if they dropped it just because NGE lost most of its sci-fi tone along the way or if it was because of time/budget constraints.
So let’s make a wish.
