Hey, I couldn't find anything with a quick search over the web or evageeks, respectively. But if there is such a thread already, have my humblest apologies and close this one immediately.

I have come to ask myself, WHY fly me to the moon. Has there ever been made a statement about why they chose this song? I mean, they could have gone with What's up by the 4 non Blonds, but no, they chose Fly me to the Moon...

So, if anybody knows, I would appreciate an answer :)

^There's always the Rei = the Moon symbolism, and the English = Cool factor, which was probably even stronger in the-mid 90's.

If the creators we're really on their game with this, it may have even be for the "translation" angle, the narrator says one thing, but really means another. Sure is plenty of that going on within the series.

Nobody should be choosing that for anything ever.

What I would like to know is why there are so many versions of the song. Did it really become that popular?

The moon was originally planned to play a bigger role in the show.

I think Frank Sinatra's cover helped.

One thing that kinda dissapointed me in the series is Blue Eyes's version wasn't ever used. It would be kinda cool if they found a way to incorporate somehow in Rebuild.

I have an idea: at the end of 4.0, if Third Impact has been averted, play it in the background during a party.

Throw in a drunken Misato shouting "OMEDETOU!" too.

It could have been played when Gendo and Fuyutsuki go to Tabgha Base.

Don't know it for a fact, but I imagine that would be expensive for anime show made on the cheap. Rebuild might be a different matter (or perhaps not). Eden of the East's Western release got screwed over a piddling little Oasis song, so the whole thing may not be worth it.

oh I like this game name random songs that don't really fit, Breakdown by the Alan Parsons Project would be a better fit then What's up.

Moon relationships aside, Fly me to the moon has a more subdued tone then the upbeat opening A Cruel Angel's Thesis, so it balances out the opening and ending themes.

Not so much "planned" as "tentatively proposed". :p And they ultimately did make things called "moons" pretty damned pivotal.

i think anno and other people just liked the song, it does sound good and it suits evangelion as an ending song. the song's meaning could also have something to do with it being used and covered by the voice actors on different occasions.

As a few people mentioned Rei seems to always be around the moon so that may be a theory. also they could have found it rather nice and decided to put it in there

The idea remained floating around for almost two decades though, considering the revival of the moon in both NME and Anima; I wonder if they dropped it just because NGE lost most of its sci-fi tone along the way or if it was because of time/budget constraints.
So let’s make a wish.
