Misato and Kaji are the closest the series comes to depicting a healthy adult relationship, and the only one that almost works out. Not to mention both characters are awesome in their own right.

I am not a fan of Gendo X the Akagis . He was just using them both as a means to an end. No one could ever replace his Yui in his heart and mind he was just using them. I think that manga Gendo said that he loved Ritsuko just to let her guard down. She was very shocked by the expression on her face and as I recall she did not even say liar. Anyhow they were just a means to a end for him.

Shinji x Asuka would make better sense than Shinji x Rei (even though the latter is my dirty little secret). Shinji and Asuka both share problems, and view (widely) different ways on how to deal with them. Them together, they could learn to balance each other, and better themselves entirely.

Yui x Gendo, because affairs.

Misato x Kaji. This is because they are foils to each other. Misato, although can be laid back at times, is responsible (mostly) but has difficulty giving moral/lessons to others (commander). Kaji, on the otherhand, is completely laid back at all times (He faces death with absolute calm), is irresponsible (can be responsible), but gives very important lessons and teaches morals (mentor). This balance creates a conflicting yet mutual connection and creates for a well rounded relationship.

Rei x Kaworu. I will explain later.

You see, what makes sense to me is a relationship based on the conclusion of balance. Conflict may seem bad, but is important because it confirms that there still remains two sides (That being said, too much conflict is not good). This is why I can see Ritsuko x Maya as an interesting combo, but it can't work because Ritsuko and Maya are too similar. They work better as a mentor/student relationship (which is already made apparent in the series).

I'm afraid I don't really support any 'canon' pairings in the series, though I see the Kaworu/Shinji pair quite... plausible? Perhaps it's the fujoshi in me talking, but I hate (NGE) Shinji far too much to even consider this.

While it's so obvious that Asuka has been pinning over Shinji, I can't accept that my queen is running after him, really.

Non-canon though... oh boy. I could probably write a manifesto on why Kaworu and Asuka are perfect together. In fact, I probably would, but right now I'm at work so all explaining would have to be done later.

She isn't, honestly. Hell, the pairing didn't even exist in-universe until the DC edits retconned it in, and even then it was more "I should be able to get this silly boy to pay attention to me. What's wrong with me?" than "I've got it bad for Shinji." IOW it was more about her own issues than any real affection for Shinji.

It appears as though Mari will be very, very sad at some point (also naked and confronted by the Reis). I predict dire things upon her meeting with Asuka, if for no other reason than the fact that Mari wrecked her ride. "Get your own Eva, you skanky bitch!"

Considering the popularity of Shinji and Rei as a couple, and now that I've seen the proposal for Kaworu and Asuka as a couple, I'm surprised I've never seen much mention of Kaworu and Rei as a couple. Sure, they don't have too much interaction together, but helping someone discover their true extraterrestrial identity has to make an impression on them. When people say, "I feel like I've met you before?" Kaworu and Rei have that going on. The way they stood side-by-side during Instrumentality reciting gooey poetry, finishing each other's lines? The time they shared a torso together?

And since Kaworu's soul must've reentered the Adam embryo, they pretty much did it. Maybe it's a little awkward realizing her appearance on Earth caused his previous body to get put into hibernation for eons, but he's still better than your brother-by-cloning.

Actually, seriously, I like this idea. Rei pretty much rejected her humanity and accepted her role as Lilith, so that means she had to break off her relationships with her "mere human" friends. Whether or not Shinji and Asuka ever had an iota of an actual relationship, they're on the beach together, and Rei is "gone," she said her goodbye. But maybe she's still around somewhere, as a quantum ghost, and maybe Kaworu's with her. And they're just talking to each other, with little to no emotion, watching us, or wandering the cosmos like Yui.

But my real favorite couple is Shinji and Asuka. Yes, those arguments against the two being an actual couple are strong, but there's no denying the narrative grabs our heads and says, "Look! You're supposed to expect these two to be a couple!" Even as early as Episode 8. Okay, maybe it was only a superficial relationship, but it was a cute superficial relationship. Maybe one day I'll fall in love with a girl who is only trying to get my attention to satisfy her own fragile ego. A guy can dream.
