The trailer has been release a while back (No one else post it here yet).

I think it looks good. The trailer looks like a remake then a prequel though.

Looks like utter shit. Utter, painful, mediocre shit. Who else is tired of people being PULLED INTO THE DARK by some unseen force in horror movies? That & the 6 or so heavy clunkers really make this look like ass. Mary Elizabeth Winstead better not be played off as some super genius...she will be.

The CG effects also look terrible. Far dated than incredible effects originated from 1982.

ALSO- does no one think taking one or two lonely women to a base far off in the depths of Antarctica with a bunch of gang of horny, hairy men a terrible idea? MEW just seems built for Norwegian rape.

Terrible looking film.

Eh. This looks disappointing actually. So far, the movie has gimmicky jump scare tactics, unoriginal ideas, and uninteresting CG. Haven't heard of the director either, the writer's credentials involve The Nightmare on Elm Street reboot and Final Destination 5. Yep, sounds like quality work in the making ;).

I think I'll just settle with the Carpenter movie instead.

it really says something when you compare that trailer to the trailer of the Carpenter film

it's...crazy to see how much this new film looks like it's out of the league of the '82 film and it's just...sad and depressing.

Since this movie comes out in two weeks, who plans on seeing it? AICN review the movie and seems like they enjoy it.

Some practical effects have been released for the film as well. I think it looks rather awesome.

Ah what the hell, I'll probably go see it. Don't have much else to do that weekend, and this doesn't look like a complete waste of six bucks.

Yeah, that's my theater of choice's matinee price (non-3D, obviously). I almost never see a movie at evening prices, it's never worth that most of the time.

Only problem is, the nearest theater to me is a thirty-minute drive...

As someone who hasn't seen the Carpenter version until just last night and thus hasn't let it sink in as one of the greatest horror films as all time, I can say that I found this new prequel to be a bit of a let down, but not awful.

Whoever said that this film would be using a lot of practical effects was a liar, and perhaps a communist. The Thing snarls, runs and jumps in fully rendered, super-shiny glory, foxtrotting through confetti sparkle explosions just like any other movie monster of this decade. It's more or less an average 2011 horror film that just happens to be loaded with homages to a classic. That's a problem. The Thing is neither horrific, nor memorable and in fact reminded me of the alien from Super 8 more than anything. The frenetic energy tries to contain itself in the ambient, slow-burn pace of the Carpenter version for awhile, but gives up by the end.

I know Roger Ebert complained in his review of the Carpenter version that the film was lacking in character development. I found the characters in the film to be as well developed as they needed to be, but this new version makes them look Shakespearean in their depth and nuance. Basically, there are three characters in this new version: the amoral Norwegian scientist who wants to study the Thing, the level-headed American paleontologist/woman and the only one who can think for herself, and everyone else.

Because the Carpenter version was so fresh in my mind, I did spot numerous set-ups for stuff in the original, so it's sound as far as the continuity humpers out there are concerned. But even that's a bit disconcerning because laying out the events nice and neat robs the original of its mystery and ultimately reveals how unnecessary this new version is.

It's a solid sci-fi horror film, but nothing memorable. Ultimately, it's biggest weakness is that it has the Carpenter version to be compared to.

Saw this one the other night. It wasn't bad, but certainly not as good as the first. My main complaints were that the cg was much too obvious in some places and also some parts were kind of forced. For example it was implied the dudes body they pulled out of the thing was a partial copy, if so they should not have been able to see the things cells assimalating his in the microscope, because those should have already been thing cells.

I think the highlight was when the good dental hygene guy got faceraped by the thing, that part was pretty creepy, what a way to go huh?

Also I wonder what the deal was with the space ship, what was the thing trying to go? Go back to space? Or move to a more populated area? Wish they showed what the initial thing looked like before it got burnt up.

I read it on Bloody Disgusting, but apparently the Scriptwriter was forced to change a lot of things by the studio.

You should totally provide links when you bring stuff like that up.

At least this holds out hope for an extended cut on DVD that might be better. Really, the stuff that was cut out sounds exactly like what this film was missing.

What the hell!? That looks way better than the crap CG that we got from the final movie. Yeah, I do admit, some of the practical effects in the John Carpenter movie do look a little fake, but what Hollywood fails to realize is today's CGI makes EVERYTHING look fake.

CGI in and of itself is just a tool, and depending on its implementation can range from the utterly convincingly to the staggeringly fake. Not much different from practical effects in that regard. The techniques just have different capabilities, strengths and weaknesses, etc.

With Thing 2011, CG effects were blatantly misused, by the sound of the interviews. But there are films that do entrust their visual effects to all available techniques and get great results (e.g. Jurassic Park trilogy; Hell Boy 1 & 2 and Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro). It's too bad Thing 2011 didn't get to follow its original plan.

Very true. I don't question CG when it's properly used. Yes it is just a tool no different than practical effects, but it's now more obvious than ever that Hollywood is just resulting to CG over all other techniques because it's the only solution to everything. I love it when I see movies that use CG the right way such as Pan's Labyrinth, T2, and Jurassic Park, because they don't let it undermine the story. I guess the root of my bitching is coming from not CG itself, but how it's currently being abused.

Replying to a bit from the Prometheus thread:

View Original PostMugwumpHasNoLiver wrote:If you want to see what I'm talking about in action, watch the awful Thing prequel that came out last year. All it does is set up the original Thing and it comes off as constrained and lifeless because it does. Had it the balls to go off in a radical and tangentially related new direction like Prometheus it could have at least been bad in an interesting way.

The Thing franchise seems intrinsically more limiting, in terms of what could be done with a prequel. If not the events at the Norway base, then what? What story could be told that involves both the featured creature and humans (since movies have to include either humans or suitably non-creepy anthromorphized characters, i.e. talking deer and rabbits, in order to be profitable)?

In other news, I finally learned that the movie was released to home video all the way back in January, but no director's cut is included. Pffffff.

I hated this movie. I hate it with all my passion. I want to send the Inquisition to burn whatever tards made this movie and ruined the canon the original movie made. I prefer that video game than watch this piece of mierda.

It is because of this movie that I have severe doubts on Prometheus.
