Actually I didn't the first time I saw them. I try not to know anything of films I plan on seeing. I knew nothing of Requiem before I saw it except it was about drug use, but as soon as it got into it I knew where it was going.Themaninblack wrote:You knew how THe SHining and how Tokoyo story where going to end to.
Why people take drugs is different for each individual. It gave me a journey as in "these people are doing drugs. It's not going to turn out well. Let's watch them descend into hell and, remember kids, this could happen to YOU if you take drugs. Only you can prevent it. Say no to drugs and Smoky the Bear will be happy." I'm just not sure I see anything else of real quality in the film besides the performances.Themaninblack wrote:What the Film is unqiue for was going tintoi why people took drugs. How was it clever? Only clever part was the ice box coming after Ellen Burstyn which made me lol.

They're great fun and generally well put together spy thrillers. And I love that they keep it on that level. They never made pretenses of being anything else.CyborgZeta wrote:I love the Bourne films.
The surface aesthetics; colors, shapes, lighting, music, etc. It's how the style feels in absence of everything else. Pauline Kael said of The Conformist: "If the ideas don't touch the imagination, the film's sensuous texture does. It's a triumph of feeling and of style - lyrical, flowing, velvety style, so operatic that you come away with sequences in your head like arias."Xard wrote:Yojimbo, what the hell do you mean with "textures" when it comes to film?
Great film, and one that I think might be considered a classic in future years. Very Kubrickean in both its visual/audio stylings and its presentation. Yeah, and the Milkshake speech is a classic. Equally funny and horrifying.slothen wrote:I just saw "There Will Be Blood" last night. It was totally awesome.

Haven't seen his stuff myself yet. I hear his writings are even better than his films, though he helped write two great ones in Fellini's Nights of Cabiria and La Dolce Vita. I know Accatone was pretty controversial when it came out and his Mamma Roma won quite a few awards. RoGoPaG is a film that combines a lot of talents working on short films including him, Rosselini and Godard, though I've heard it's a mixed-bag. His Gospel According to St. Matthew I've heard is a great film about the life of Jesus.chee wrote:Jimbo, can you suggest any good starting points for a Pasolini n00b?

I saw the Godard segment of RoGoPaG. Not his most interesting work.
As for Pasolini, I recently found "Medea" on youtube. Not sure if that's a great place to start. I torrented Il Decamerone and Salo, but they had no subs.
Oh, and Ornette introduced me to a strange, art-house anime called Midori, not sure if you've heard of it. Very interesting, it's all animated by one guy and it makes some really effective use of limited animation. Although if you're easily offended I'd avoid it if I were you.

Well, I don't download anything so if it's not available on Netflix or to buy I look for imports that have English subtitles. In fact I just bought Hitchcock's Notorious and Rebecca which, if you can believe it or not aren't in print here right now (WTF?). Quality is a concern, but what can ya do?

Just to shake things up a bit
La Dolce Vita sucks
I really mean it. It is bad movie and I've never even been able to finish it
Shooting is dull and mundane, pace is way too slow, there's no plot or anything to hold interest. Heck, only good thing about it are awesome actor performances but that isn't enough to save the movie. I know it's importance in annals of cinema but it just doesn't have anything to offer. No-plot wouldn't be problem but typically such films offer some kind of hook, be them interesting characters etc.
La Dolce Vita has none
I haven't seen it in years though and wasn't as much in art films as I nowadays am but...

I remember discovering Fellini back when I first discovered world cinema. He was the 3rd director I delved into after Kurosawa and Bergman, and I just didn't like any of his. 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita were slow and dull. No great stories, no depth that I could see... then in recent years I've come back to him and it's been like turning an enemy into your best friend. Nights of Cabiria and La Strada were simply lovely. And I plan on revisiting La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 soon. But even now I recall that there was likely so much more to LDV that I missed then. In fact, even after almost 10 years after seeing it the first time I remember certain scenes and get now what I didn't then. In some way it bears some similarities to L'Avventura. Another film from the same year that deals with disillusionment, emptiness, and the struggle against these abstract ideas and emotions through a sparse narrative but incredibly detailed visuals, where by downplaying typical "events" that typically occur in films the details are highlighted, and nuances are able to say that much more.Xard wrote:I haven't seen it in years though and wasn't as much in art films as I nowadays am but...
My advice would definitely be to see it again and see if you can catch and appreciate what you didn't before. Fellini was one of the singular artists of the cinema and even though I couldn't appreciate him then I've come to much more so now.

I'm looking into Notorious now, I got referred to it from http://evageeks.org/forum/posting.php?mode=quote&p=174730 which I've been meaning to check out, it was on your list to, so I have high hopes. I just finished Double Indemnity by the way, which I got a kick out of, just what I was hoping for from film noir.

It's great fun innit? And there's a lot of subtleties that'll keep you coming back and enjoying it later. Edward G's suicide speech is just priceless and, even more remarkable, it's done all in one take!Squirrel Ninja wrote:I just finished Double Indemnity by the way, which I got a kick out of, just what I was hoping for from film noir.
Double Indemnity wrote:Barton Keyes: You know, you, uh, oughta take a look at the statistics on suicide some time. You might learn a little something about the insurance business.
Edward S. Norton: Mister Keyes, I was RAISED in the insurance business.
Barton Keyes: Yeah, in the front office. Come now, you've never read an actuarial table in your life, have you? Why they've got ten volumes on suicide alone. Suicide by race, by color, by occupation, by sex, by seasons of the year, by time of day. Suicide, how committed: by poison, by firearms, by drowning, by leaps. Suicide by poison, subdivided by TYPES of poison, such as corrosive, irritant, systemic, gaseous, narcotic, alkaloid, protein, and so forth. Suicide by leaps, subdivided by leaps from high places, under the wheels of trains, under the wheels of trucks, under the feet of horses, from STEAMBOATS. But, Mr. Norton: Of all the cases on record, there's not one single case of suicide by leap from the rear end of a moving train. And you know how fast that train was going at the point where the body was found? Fifteen miles an hour. Now how can anybody jump off a slow-moving train like that with any kind of expectation that he would kill himself? No, no soap, Mr. Norton. We're sunk, and we'll have to pay through the nose, and you know it.

That was a tight little rant, but I think my favorite was:
Extended metaphor+ sexual innuendo= win
Phyllis: Mr. Neff, why don't you drop by tomorrow evening about eight-thirty. He'll be in then.
Walter Neff: Who?
Phyllis: My husband. You were anxious to talk to him weren't you?
Walter Neff: Yeah, I was, but I'm sort of getting over the idea, if you know what I mean.
Phyllis: There's a speed limit in this state, Mr. Neff. Forty-five miles an hour.
Walter Neff: How fast was I going, officer?
Phyllis: I'd say around ninety.
Walter Neff: Suppose you get down off your motorcycle and give me a ticket.
Phyllis: Suppose I let you off with a warning this time.
Walter Neff: Suppose it doesn't take.
Phyllis: Suppose I have to whack you over the knuckles.
Walter Neff: Suppose I bust out crying and put my head on your shoulder.
Phyllis: Suppose you try putting it on my husband's shoulder.
Walter Neff: That tears it. [He takes his hat and briefcase after his advances are coldly rebuffed.] 8:30 tomorrow evening, then.
Phyllis: That's what I suggested.
Walter Neff: You'll be here too?
Phyllis: I guess so, I usually am.
Walter Neff: Same chair, same perfume, same anklet?
Phyllis: I wonder if I know what you mean.
Walter Neff: I wonder if you wonder.

That's the kind of writing that Chandler/Wilder do so well that's so smart and sharp but they walk that tightrope of it becoming too... written-y, if that makes any sense... too contrived I might say. But the impeccable delivery sells it. DI is a film that's always on that line between it working and it becoming hokey, and it almost always stays on the right side.

Please they all took drugs for seemingly different reasons...but like all drug users...it all boiled down into one simple fact, that the movie ends on. A mother having a dream of her son becoming a success and taking care oif here. It boils down to escape from reality. Why you want to esape reality varies from person to person, yes. But the film was saying that in the end it boiled down to that reason (besides that drugs are bad...and doing it in a semi-unqiue way) and by taking them you lose your dreams, and what you want in reality. You can disagree with the message...but it well delivered.
I won.

Yeah but that's rather like an umbrella reason where many things besides drug use can also fall under, and I'm still not buying it. Some people do drugs simply because they enjoy it - they like being high. And I'd be willing to bet most started out like that.Themaninblack wrote:It boils down to escape from reality.
And it's well delivered like a shovel to the head, if that is indeed well delivered.
