But if what movie came out "on top" was all that mattered, then Inside Out would be considered a failure, since it opened at #2 behind Jurassic World.

Inside Out is a children's film. They're not under quite as much pressure as other movies are.

There are plenty of movies that have been deemed successes even though they never hit #1 on the charts. I'll just name The Day After Tomorrow, Interstellar, and World War Z. As for Fury Road itself, it more than doubled its $150 million budget. I think it's fair to say it belongs in that camp.

I'm not sure those are the best examples to use. The Day After Tomorrow is not remembered fondly at all in most circles, Interstellar is divisive and made a lot of money, and World War Z has its fans but most people think it had lots of missed potential and prefer the book.

The salt waste they were thinking about crossing is probably a completely evaporated ocean, and thus certain death.

Sorry I couldn't find any other place to post it.

Terrible news. George Miller says he's never going to direct another Mad Max Movie.

That's also at odds with earlier reports that indicate he had a number of sequels in mind. I doubt he'd lay the groundwork for those if he had no intention of revisiting the franchise.

Don't believe everything you read online. Some reporter misheard George Miller at the red carpet for the National Board of Review, wrote an misquoted article, threw it out into the Internet sea, it got picked up by everyone without doing fact checking and soon became "truth". The internet really doesn't do fact checking well.

http://www.thewrap.com/george-miller-promises-more-mad-max-movies-after-scoring-first-directing-nomination/

GEORGE MILLER:
“That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review,” he said. “She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another ‘Mad Max’ movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another ‘Mad Max.’ It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.”

It's the same story he's been saying for a year. He wants to do a small, independent, car-stunt free movie first and THEN jump back into the post-apocalypse with Max. Personally, I'd be okay with the universe ending at Fury Road but if Miller feels he has another story or two to tell then in Miller I trust.

BUT no one but George Miller should make a Mad Max movie. You take Miller out of the equation and the Mad Max universe is just another post-apocalyptic setting. Miller is the heart and soul of those movies!

If that's the case, I wonder what his next project will be. I've heard rumors it might be something DC related (Justice League maybe?) but it could be another sequel to Babe for all I know.

George Miller once was going to do a Justice League movie. He won't have anything to do with future DC comic movies from now on because he has no interest in it. Warner Brothers is a very director friendly studio - that's why Stanley Kubrick, The Wachowski's, Christopher Nolan and more have made it their homes - & with the massive critical & commercial success of Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller has bought himself a seat at WB's "Give the director what they want in return for future blockbuster success" table. They WANT him to do Mad Max 5 now and WB will appease Miller however possible to assure it happens. The man has carte blanche to do whatever project he sees fit in return for making WB a Mad Max 5. Kind've like how Nolan was able to make The Prestige, Inception and Interstellar as promises of or rewards from doing The Dark Knight Trilogy.

George Miller has repeatedly expressed the desire that his next movie is going to be small, have zero action scenes, little to no effects - digital or practical - and be a full on drama. His go-to comparison feature is Tangerine, a great indie shot on the iPhone5 about transexual prostitutes in Los Angeles. That's not to imply he'll make a movie with the subject matter as Tangerine but that he wants to make a movie on the same scale & production style as Tangerine. Frankly, I hope Miller gets to do whatever this drama he has in mind is. If you look at his career the man hasn't made a movie with a budget below $100 million since Babe 2: Pig in the City (amazing) & he hasn't made a full on drama since Lorenzo's Oil (you'll cry forever). With any luck he can shoot that drama soon & have it in theaters either before the end of the year or sometime in 2017.

Repeat, whatever George Miller's next movie is it is NOT going to be a massive blockbuster.

I get the feeling she was rather fond of Fury Road. Anyone else get that feeling?

If it weren't for the new Star Wars, Fury Road would be my favorite film of the year.

On many levels, it's way better than TFA, but I'm also just a Star Wars nut (who isn't these days I guess).

Man, that's a tough one: I giggled like a child all the way through Star Wars, I was so happy, but Fury Road left me leaving the theater shaking. Those are the only two movies to ever get that much of a physical reaction out of me, and as much of a Star Wars fanboy I am...I have to say Fury Road is probably the better movie and thus one I liked more.

...It's tough! It's a tough choice!

Nah. For all its appeal TFA is a deeply flawed movie on nearly every level: direction, story, thematic coherence, the whole bit. It gets by on the appeal of its main cast (which is very strong), good effects work, and a general sense of wonder, which is what you need in a film that is escapism in its purest form.

By contrast, Fury Road is damn near perfect. Outstanding direction, brilliant acting, breathtaking visuals, thematic resonance all over the place, take your pick. Its one flaw is the central premise, which is admittedly iffy (you're in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and you're wasting water, and fuel, and ammunition, and supplies to that crazy extent? I get the whole solidifying-power-by-parading-around-your-wealth angle, but this is the sort of thing that does not hold up under scrutiny for long).

IOW Fury Road knocked it out of the park, while TFA just had me going, "okay, it's close enough to the feel of SW that I'll overlook everything that's wrong with it and just go with it, because Star Wars, man!!!" That's enough to make it a damn enjoyable movie, but it just isn't in Fury Road's league.

What separates Fury Road from TFA is this, with the latter we'd seen it before, it'd just been awhile and also done so well (IMO). With the former, it was a unique experience and unlike anything ever put to screen (again, IMO).
