Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

What a film, gave me goosebumps. I find it hard to understand the naysayers like Quentin "Uno Farto" Tarantino's outrage.

War For the Planet of the Apes- Fantastic film, without a doubt the best in an already amazing trilogy. Seriously, Andy Serkis should win the first Oscar for a CGI character. I have no doubt I'll be going to see this once more before the theatrical run ends.

Was very bored yesterday, so I picked a random film from a list on Netflix and watched it: Not Another Teen Movie, a 2001 comedy that takes every single high-school movie cliché and exaggerates it to hell and back. The plot is basically She's All That, to the point where Chris Evans and Chyler Leigh look almost exactly like Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook's characters respectively, with smatterings of 10 Things I Hate About You, Cruel Intentions and countless other movies from the teen movie genre and film in general.

Granted, I haven't seen most of these films, but I was more than aware of the tropes that I've seen done to death elsewhere, and enjoyed seeing them all come together in all their insanity. The token black guy who says black guy things? Check. The horny dorks trying to get laid? Check. The sports star with a tragic backstory? Check. Prom nights with choreographed dancers, a party where one incredibly minor act is framed as horrifying to the point of everything coming to a halt, reuniting at an airport to give a corny speech; it's all here, and I love it.

Much like how Airplane! works by cramming in every storytelling cliché associated with disaster films and making them incredibly ludicrous while staying genuine, Not Another Teen Movie works by treating its source material with a good deal of reverence, but playing them up to be intentionally funny (whereas typical teen movies are unintentionally funny for their melodrama). It also helps that there's a good deal of background gags that you might miss, a surprisingly great soundtrack (complete with awesome musical number), and a whole ton of shout-outs that nevertheless can still be appreciated without knowing the source material.

Be warned; it seems to be a 'love it or hate it' kind of film, and the opening is a lot more risqué compared to the rest of the film, so don't be surprised if you don't end up liking the film. For me at least, it turned out to be a good deal better than I was expecting, and it's certainly a much better send-up movie than Kung Pow! Enter the Fist.

I've always loved that one. I love comedies that don't have an ironic tone and just let things be funny because they're funny.

It completely rips apart the teen movie without being mean to the teen movie.

There's nothing wrong with really stupid comedy. But, like everything else it needs to be done well.
Not Another Teen Movie is really stupid comedy done really well. The line "She's got paint on her overalls!" is something me and my friends still will randomly work into nights of fun drinking.

Baby Driver is the best summer movie since Mad Max Fury Road. If you can only see one summer film this year, skip the MCU and watch Baby Driver instead.

Passengers-2016

To avoid ranting I will just say avoid this movie like its the plague, its a very bad unbelievable piece of sci fi.

This movie brings up a really dark moral concept of waking someone up intentionally but doesn't have the balls to do the follow through and ultimately rewards Prats character for doing a terrible act which would ruin Lawrence's characters life and would mean that she could never ever trust him again as long as he lived. If they had kept the original twilight zone twist ending intended which was him dying and Lawrence's character having to wake up another person intentionally and framed it as a horror/stalker thriller it would have worked brilliantly but it doesn't work at all as a believable healthy romance and to top this all off the characters do nothing to fix the ship which is clearly going wrong and getting worse over time. All they care about is having sex and drinking, its just crazy then suddenly its like we gotta fix this in the last few minutes..

Caesar speaks fluently now. Most of them still sign though. Maurice speaks a few times and there's a new ape that talks a lot and provides most of the comedic relief.

John Carter:

I can understand why this bombed in the box office but it's actually not that bad.

The problem is it's kind of slow at the start and even when you do get to Mars and start getting the swashbuckling and the tribal Warfare. The slow start kind of puts a damper on the whole thing.

Also as a fan of the original books there are parts of this that could have been improved by going a little bit over exaggerated. You could have had Dejah thoris skintone hot pink, make plateaus out of solid gold, and castles carved out of ivory like described in the book.

Also as much as I love Andrew Stantons work on Toy Story and Finding Nemo. He just wasn't the guy to handle this kind of material. While the sets are impressive and the acting on point, you can tell there's some genuine anxiety behind the ccamera.

Another issue is that with the John Carter books being as influential as they are, inspiring everything from Star Wars and Avatar. When you make a movie that respect the source material the way this thing does, it just comes off as a repeat of cliches in movies the audience knows better even if the source material is the reason behind those cliches.

Having said all that I enjoyed this movie. And I'm kind of sad it never got a sequel.

Doctor Strange (2016)

This movie was so good! I was honestly expecting the same as the Avengers movies which I've grown kind of tired off but this film is really clever and I don't like the comparison to Iron Man as this such a different animal even though it uses some very similar themes. Benedict Cumberbatch really works in this role as Steven Strange and the visuals in this film have real imagination. I loved the drifting between dimensions and plains of existence and it really feels like a dream world in how random it is and how it can change and the end villain is beaten in a way that's clever and different and is not about posturing but more mental thought and discipline.

The CGI team who did this film really deserve praise as they really put there heart and soul in to this movie and it shows. Also to the movies credit Strange dose not get the girl and his first apology to her falls short and is outright rejected which adds to believability and means you want to root for them getting closer in the sequel. Sadly one thing in this which does not period is Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One who they claim is an ancient Celtic women, its pure white washing and in my view they should have picked an actress who was ether Egyptian, Mexican or Chinese to reflect an ancient culture not a white woman and sadly they do, do a stupid plot fail with the last post credit as well which just made me shake my head.

The other student Mordo has just happen to have gone evil...even though he said I'm leaving which in the film feels more like he was going else where to reflect not that he was going to turn villain . Now I realize that in the comics he is a villain but his turning in to a villain feels slightly to sudden I just hope they are going to show his transition to evil better in the sequel

Apocalypse Now Redux. Until tonight I'd only seen the theatrical cut a few times when I was younger. I can appreciate the extra insight the added scenes have, but really it feels like it ruins the pacing and is overly bloated. I know this is a question that has caused many an argument but I'll ask anyways; which version do you consider the superior version? For me it'd be the theatrical cut, I doubt I'll ever re-watch the Redux.

So, funny story: I took some sleeping pills of a brand I had never had the other night, to try and get back on a regular sleeping schedule. I had a bad reaction to them, and started having weird, vivid hallucinations and night terrors of people in my room, trying to kill me, "the whispers", etc. The hallucinations got worse whenever I tried to actually sleep, so I decided 'Screw it, I'll just go watch a movie'. Literally anything kind and nice and warm to help me stop literally bad-tripping off of whatever the heck my body was rejecting from the pills.

So that's how the last movie I watched turned out to be Love Actually. Which has always been one of my guiltiest pleasure comfort food movie. And it worked! The medicine wore off by the time the movie was done, and lo and behold as the sun was rising, I could finally actually sleep.

...before that though, it was The Lobster and I totally loved it!

I know this is a question that has caused many an argument but I'll ask anyways; which version do you consider the superior version?

I think I actually prefer the theatrical as well, but I heartily miss the French plantation scene from Redux when it's gone. I will also say that more and more, barring really invasive and obviously money-grabbing studio cuts, I usually find myself drawn to the shorter cut of just about any film. Brevity is the soul of wit and all that.
