After replaying Escape From Butcher Bay after so long, I decided it was time to rewatch the Riddick trilogy, one per night. I've decided that Pitch Black is still my favorite, but that I prefer Riddick (2013) over Chronicles now. Partly because of how much it pays tribute to the original, but Chronicles has too much unexplored lore (elementals, necromonger society), and I thought the director's cut scenes involving Riddick flashing back to Furia took away from the movie honestly. In conclusion:
Pitch Black: 9.5/10 (one of the best sci-fi thrillers ever made)
Chronicles of Riddick: 6/10 (good action scenes, but drags at points)
Riddick: 8/10 (lots of fun)

I'm very much looking forward to the next movie, which is going to be titled Furia, and the possibility of a spin off series focusing on Tooms called Merc City.

The 1950s or 1970s version?
The 50s is right up there with Gojira/The Day the earth stood still/Creature from the black lagoon/War of the worlds/The Thing from another world as the best monster/sci-fi movies of the 50s.
And many would argue the 70s remake is even better just as the 81 remake of The Thing and the 86 remake of the Fly were to their originals.

Just got out from seeing 10 Cloverfield Lane. I was pretty engaged with the suspense and thrills until the twist at the end, and then I was kinda mad. The conclusion helped, but the climax seemed like a different movie entirely. I wonder how much it ties together with the original Cloverfield, and if they'll continue it. Overall opinion: meh.

Regarding 10 Colverfield Lane

I thought it should have cut to credits either
a) when she takes her mask off after hearing the birds and realizes the air is breathable
b) right after she says "oh, come on!" after seeing the alien ship in the distance

I agree with the "two different movies" thing. I heard a rumour that the last 6 minutes were added after production was basically complete on the rest of the movie and it was originally going to be called "The Cellar" and not have a connection to Cloverfield at all.

I have an old colleague who worked with the production so I can share some details.

10 Cloverfield Lane did start out as a stand alone film called The Cellar/Valencia.

The ending reveal of ALIENS was always in the script but the initial drafts ended with the girl escaping & finding the air breathable. But, then she quickly realizes the surface is deserted & the last image of the story was her coming across a city in ruins & seeing an Alien spaceship.

Once JJ Abrams became involved he decided to turn it into a Cloverfield sequel by the way of an Anthology format. The ending was given an action boost but the story predominantly stayed the same. They didn't really tack the action climax on at the last minute - it probably existed on paper a good year before shooting started - it just never feels organic to the story that precedes it. Good film though.

Apparently, Abrams really is into the idea of turning Cloverfield into a yearly thing from now on & for once I'm on his wavelength. They find an existing screenplay that can be done for a small(ish) budget - sub $35 million - give a new director a chance to show off their chops, film the project under it's original title & then a few weeks before release rename it "Something Cloverfield" & give it a trailer. As someone who loves Anthologies I think it's actually a pretty brilliant idea that not only gives film fans the opportunity to see more smaller genre fare on the big screen - friendly reminder, fuck the overproduced garbage that is Batman V. Superman - but it also is another way to introduce new filmmakers to the world.

In fact, right now the word is that the third Cloverfield film might be starting production. J.J. Abrams & Paramount are producing a small sci-fi project called GOD PARTICLE from an original screenplay, directed by a young up-and-comer filmmaker that already has a wide theatrical release date set for February 24, 2017. It's not common practice or cheap to set a wide release for a small budgeted original science fiction project a year in advance... unless you're planning to rebrand it as something bigger. The Cloverfield Particle perhaps?

A thrilling thieves movie, every bit as good as my personal favorite Ocean's Eleven 2001! Will Smith plays it cool and Margot Robbie dazzles in her sexiness. Can't wait to see both of them in Suicide Squad.

DARK WATER (2005)___First time viewing
- Never seen the original, I intended to do so before seeing this one, but I ended up spontaneously watching this one tonight.
- Its atmospheric and suspenseful but it lacks the horrifically bleak sense of impending doom that the American Grudge movies had. (not a bad or good thing, just a observation)
- Jennifer Connelly is absolutely phenomenal here.
- They really really let you get to know the whole cast here, especially Dahlia and her daughter, who are incredibly sympathetic.
- Some absolutely gorgeous cinematography in places, when Dahlia opens the door to the room above hers for the first time, the shot of the flooded room with the sunlight coming in is breathtaking.
- Film really gets across the build up of smaller problems slowly picking away at you when you have stress of a larger issue on your shoulders, and also shows how people can unintentionally harshly effect other people by doing the smallest of things against them thru laziness or indifference.

- Of the J-Horror films and their remakes that I have seen (Grudge, Ring, One missed call) this one seemed like it would be the one to have a happy ending with how much time they spend with the lead enduring her emotional ups and downs, struggles small and big and the fact that up to the ending the Ghost did not seem malicious. Kinda wish they had done so. Pretty much my only complaint about the film.

I watched Session 9 (2001) last night and have to say, as someone who considers themselves something of a horror connoisseur, it was really chilling and engrossing. It's not perfect; there's one or two things I would've changed or tweaked, but ultimately it took me to a place I didn't expect and subverted/betrayed (in a good way) most expectations. Highly recommended. One of the best psychological horrors I've seen, probably.

Never seen the original, I intended to do so before seeing this one, but I ended up spontaneously watching this one tonight.

Watch the original, it's fantastic.

I watched Hush (2016) on netflix last night and was very pleasantly surprised. A nice little home invasion thriller about a deaf author who lives alone in the woods and her cottage comes under seige from a crossbow wielding maniac. Seems though that the general consensus is people didn't like it because

the killer's motive is never revealed. I liked it because that's what oldschool slashers were all about, not the reason, just the terror. These kind of movies aren't supposed to be deep, the entire genre was created to make teenagers scared of being home alone.

I just noticed that when Truman is in his basement looking at pictures of his dad, we get a quick glimpse of the inside of his stash box, and there is what appears to be marijuana wrapped in plastic. I find this exceedingly amusing because 1) the entire world is aware of his private life and the things he tries to keep secret, and 2) if the world he inhabits is designed, then somewhere in the script there is a role for his drug dealer. I wonder how the producers of the show could get away with that? The best conclusion I can come up with is that it's fake, and they're serving Truman a placebo.

In the Year of Our Lord 1974 (2009): The first instalment in the Red Riding Trilogy, rewatched it after having somehow forgotten about it almost completely recently. Now I want to curl up and die and stay home for the rest of the week; what a bleak but beautifully effecting movie. Basically True Detective set in the north of England, except I think this "sprawl" is so much more sinister, intelligent and dread-inducing. The characters, acting, the setting, atmosphere and direction, all on point too. I saw Andrew Garfield in 99 Homes the other night, convincing me that this guy has the chops, but this is definitely the best performance I've seen him give. Also, I just realised I've never seen the other two of these. Guess I'm going to have to do something about that.

The Red Riding.  SPOILER: Show

I remember seeing Red Riding like...five year ago I think. Had to watch it with the subtitles on because the accents were so thick. It does sort of feel like a British version of True Detective (in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the showrunners were influenced by it) but I never really felt like the payoff was there from a narrative perspective.

Did you see 1980 and 1983, Traj? I really like the first one but haven't seen the other two yet. In regards to 1974 alone, I get what you're saying about emotional narrative pay-off, especially considering the ending is so downbeat. I still think it's an amazing movie, though.
