You just watched his best film, but everything he did was amazing. Stalker, Ivan's Childhood, and Andrei Rublev are probably the best choices to view next out of his filmography. Nostalghia and The Sacrifice are among his most difficult films--the later, IMO, almost reaching Mirror's level of "whoa" and "wtf"--so they should probably be reserved for last.

I hope Andrei Rublev gets a BD treatment sometime, seeing as how Criterion released Solaris on BD recently. Same for the films Kino has rights to, especially Zerkalo... though hopefully they give it a better transfer. Stalker at the least certainly deserves it.

The difference in the markings on the fins on the Gundam is quite obvious. It's the similar taste in movies that's the source of confusion here.

I watched Pulp Fiction and 11:59 this weekend. Both great movies, though in retrospect 11:59 shouldn't be watched after Pulp Fiction without some sort of protection from the dialogue quality whiplash.

Lee Chang-dong's Poetry: Uplifting and enthralling, the final scene was extraordinary.

Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins: Miike delivers! Unquestionably a Miike film even though it has an atmosphere unlike his other films.

And with that, the festival is over for me. Let's see how fast I can write my report. As a short summary, here's some sort of an internal order (from best to worst) for the films I saw:
13 Assassins
Poetry
Cold Fish
Robot
The Borrower Arrietty
My Neighbours the Yamadas
Guilty of Romance
Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame
Milocrorze - A Love Story
I Saw the Devil

El Verdugo

I love the cinematography by Tonino Delli Colli (excellent as always) and the tragicomedy aspects, very obviously influenced by Bunuel.

A friend of a friend had never seen Tremors so we had a group viewing of it and its sequel.

Saw Gregg Araki's Totally Fucked Up today, was really cool. I really like how it was shot and put together.
It was a really gay movie.

Hai gaiz. Long time no see.

Stuff I've watched:

Millennium Mambo: Really, not that spectacular of a film. That's not to say that I don't like it, but if it weren't directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien it would not have received the attention it's received.

The Graduate: Does it live up to years of expectations? I guess so. I liked it but I wasn't really super in love with it, but I kind of already knew a lot of what actually happens in the movie.

Days of Being Wild: I'd still say it's Wong's second best film, next to Chungking Express

Shaun of the Dead: I love this film.

Mad Detective: See above.

I wish Jimbo were around right now, he'd be jealous that I saw these next two films on 35mm:

Dust in the Wind: One of the best films I've seen from Hou so far, but still I preferred...

The Terrorizers: I need to see more of Edward Yang's movies.

Also, super excited to learn that a 35mm print of fucking Peking Opera Blues will be playing around these parts in November.

Metropolis. Yeah, that German movie from 1927 that is apparently the oldest sci-fi movie ever...........

My mind is thoroughly blown, I enjoyed the hell out of it and it was fantastic.

^ For the oldest sci-fi movie, Metropolis is indeed old, though the French movie A Trip to the Moon / Le Voyage dans la lune predated it by 25 years.
I never thought I would come back to Evangelion after EoE,
But I discovered Re-Take (or it found me?) and
now here I am.

Yes, Xard.

SPOILER: Show
Kill Bill is, in fact, better. I like Meiko Kaji, though.
