Not sure if there's something that I'm missing, but are you saying that without the big names to bring in the money that would allow most studios who have such a luxury to do "risky" projects, they should also shed the Ghibli name to create a brand new studio that nobody's ever heard of consisting of staff that have never carried any money raising, in order to produce "risky" projects. And that's a better business model?
I understand the gist of what you're going for I think, but it seems that even for a studio like Ghibli, they're at the whims of business and at least making enough money to keep doing what they do. Ghibli is not Disney, and it's definitely not like Hollywood, they need to raise money for projects and I'd imagine it'll be harder to do, especially when the projects are riskier. It's not like Ghibli's got some bankroll of money that they can draw from to do whatever they want.
Ghibli's not going to be the same without Miyazaki, but it's also not a huge corporation, it's got like a few hundred employees. And a lot of them are probably transient. Companies like that aren't the same when someone like that is gone. But it doesn't mean they can't continue to do business or be creative, we'll have to see I guess.

For everyone who hasn't seen it yet, I highly recommend watching The Kingdom of Dreams and Magic. This movie shows us a lot of intriguing things, for instance how integral the combo of Suzuki Miyazaki has become for Ghibli. That Ghibli needs some time to breathe and has to reorganise and restructure itself without this combo seems only natural to me. Studio Ghibli is more a place of humanity and art than a business, and if the grandfather leaves the tight-knitted family, the bereaved need to stop for a while and figure some things out.

Are these statements from him for real?
http://dalnreblagging.tumblr.com/post/1 ... h-works-as
Miyazaki's already on top of his game, literally a demigod of the industry whose works speak for themselves, but him making such statements, if confirmed, why in this age and place he has to take trivial potshots at things -- such as the SuperWhoLock fandom -- that don't really seem to cause any harm to his image, life works, or Japanese culture in general? Is he (and many others) that much offended?
If I were him I'll leave those things alone. No wonder why it seems Japanese pop culture is being put in 3rd place.

Miyazaki is a known sufferer from Crotchety Old Git Syndrome, so it wouldn't surprise me if it were real. This is the same man who compared iPad use to masturbation and threatened to kill Anno if he used more than a certain amount of colors on the God Warrior sequence, after all.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

There's no source at all for any of that made up stuff, the image is from years ago.
I know he doesn't really fit the kindly old grandfather image a lot of people have of him, but this is a bit more extreme than what I was expecting. If it's true that is.

I expect the source is about as reliable as these found on /a/ today
but even so -- reading comprehension, people. It was Kojima to whom the remarks about SuperWhoLockians was attributed, not Miyazaki.
The question as to why SuperWhoLock is a thing we can discard for the moment.

Miyazaki may be a grumpy old man at times but he wouldn't say anything as extreme as that, kojima on the other hand i can totally see saying something like that, kojima hates everyone, even (especially) his own fans.
Also a a doctor who fan but not being involved in the other two fanbases of the SuperWhoLock name i going to be honest those other 2 fanbases annoy me, sherlock at least has credibility at points, Supernatural is just queerbaiting trash and don't try and tell me it isn't, i have seen it and dear god i have never seen such blatant queerbaiting before.
oh and to the people wondering why superwholock became a thing:
david tenant and matt smith are handsome/baby faced and the doctor is canonically pansexual/panromantic meaning the teenage straight girls go wild, hence why so many people were pissed when we went back to an older doctor, the crossover part is just that many of those teenage girls happened to notice all these shows had decent looking guys who might or might not be gay so through the power of tumblr a terrible sub-fanbase was born.

I definitely don't think the second image Tines posted is real. That kind of monumental rudeness just doesn't really happen in those kind of settings in Japan. If it is real, that's grade-A level asshole behavior right there. But as I said, I have my doubts. As for creators hating their fans, well, I've been in some of those fandoms and I can't say I really blame them half the time.

Trolling people with subtitles is so easy though given you need to be at least somewhat proficient in the language to understand that's not what they're saying. Unless it's a bad troll sub, but no one cares about those.

I'm glad Kaguya didn't win because it deserves better.

Let's waste everyone's time by posting an article where all the voters are ignorant about what's being discussed so they all either vote using arbitrary measures, relying on their kid's opinion, or abstaining entirely because "lol, animation is for kidz", a sound writing strategy to be sure.

There was mention of the Honorary Oscar recipients. Quick clips of Totoro and Porco Rosso IIRC for Miyazaki but I didn't see his sequence from the beginning, so it'd be great to dig up a clip of that.

I got to see When Marnie was There in theatres the other night and I was pretty happy with it. The only other non-Miyazaki Ghibli I've seen has been From Up on Poppy Hill, and I thought Marnie was much more whimsical, simpler, and overall more enjoyable. The animation was incredibly beautiful and fluid, and it felt nice to see twenty first century compact cars animated in a Ghibli film. As with most films from the studio, all of the characters were likable in one way or another and Anna is a wonderfully done loner. The film does tend to lay on the cheese a bit hard at times, but as long as you're not a cynical sad sack you won't mind it at all.
Needless to say, if it's playing in your area you should probably go see it.

I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

I had forgotten about it, so thanks for bumping the thread. It's screening in SF subbed/dubbed, will try to see this weekend.

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki on Bluray 11/17
Due out exclusively from Amazon on November 17th, The Collected Works of Hayao
Miyazaki contains each of the maestro’s eleven feature films: Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro,
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro,
Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away,
Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises.
But the highlight for those who already own all of these films on Blu-ray will be the set’s
bonus features, including Yuki no Taiyo (Yuki’s Sun) — a 1972 television pilot based on a manga
by Tetsuya Chiba that was directed, storyboarded and animated by Hayao Miyazaki. The set also
contains three episodes (26, 27, and 41) of the 1972 anime series Akado Suzunosuk (Little Samurai),
featuring storyboards by the filmmaker. Fans will also get the uncut version of
Miyazaki’s Retirement Press Conference, which was thankfully not the final page in his career.
The whole package is rounded off with a book featuring The Great Dichotomy: Looking at the
Works of Hayao Miyazaki by Tomohiro Machiyama, which “explores the themes and techniques
of this revered Japanese filmmaker, and selected text from Hayao Miyazaki’s initial notes and
creative
proposals for the production of each film.”
