After methodlessly vomiting my thoughts over a poor, innocent channel on the semi-official discord, I think I am capable of making sense out of my opinion on Ep 22:
SPOILER: Show
First of all, this episode was really sweet, in multiple senses. Firstly, sweet as in "I like what I am seeing". Secondly, the overall tone managed to put a smile on my face despite the fairly grim tone, and thirdly, the final scene pushed all the right buttons for me.
Now on to the details:
Overall, I can't help but feel like the episode was written with the instruction to "make it feel like the season finale and stick an open end to it". Not that that's a bad thing, quite the opposite actually.
Probably the main reason why it felt like this is the amount of loose ends it ties up: What happened to Naomi, Hachi and the original Nana, how the parasites live after the huge battle, how the remaining Nines cope with having outlived their purpose (the "and outer space doesn't sound too bad as a resting place" is probably one of my favorite one-liners from the entire show), what's the deal with Hiro's horns,...
As for Zero Two: Not exactly a new concept, but well enough executed to not be spotted immediately, and it resulted in some good-looking shots (also, I really like the look of bandage Zero Two). Also, the breakdown of Goro after Hiro announced that he will go save his waifu was probably one of my favorite ones in the series so far.
Now predictions for 23/24:
-Mitsuru and Kokoro are bound to regain their memories one way or another (I would love to see an "asymmetrical regain", things like one before the other, or them starting to remember different events initally)
-following that, they choose to ignore the "pregnant women can't pilot" thing, outcome unsure, either success and deus ex machina in space battle (which is the logical event, as Kokoro already piloted while being pregnant) or something goes horribly wrong one way or another, and they have to watch helplessly (I don't think it's exactly likely that they decide to pilot, but it could be nice to see if it was the case)
-The series can only really end in four ways, if you ask me:
1) Hiro stays in Strelitzia Apath with 02 while the others return to earth (probably without the Nines which sacrifice themselves)
2) Mitsuru and Kokoro being the only ones of Squad 13 remaining on Earth, while the others all stay in space, dead, alove or something in between
3) Mitsuru/Kokoro also going to space and staying there
4) everyone (except maybe the Nines) returning for WAFF-ish ending

...this was not nearly as structured as I hoped it would be

That's what I thought. Have they forgotten there's a wild place growing trees, back around the ruined town by the sea? And what about the Garden?

Also
SPOILER: Show
are they packing 02 along with the expedition team, or is she going to wake up on Earth (after the inevitable power of love one-shot of all the VIRM fleet just like in episode 15) with Hiro still out in space?

Possibilities:

(1a) They left her body; Hiro frees Zerotsuu's soul/mind/spirit/whatever, and it returns to her body; Hiro rejoins her.
(1b) They took her body; the rest as above.

(2) Her spirit merges with Hiro's in his body. Super-being confirmed! (Human and Klaxo evolutionary jump.)

(3) Hiro releases her and also himself; their naked disembodied spirits float off into the void hand in hand to start a new world (Ideon ending).

(4) Everyone becomes part of Strelizia which floats off to start a new world somewhere (EoE ending).

(5) Code 002's spirit is stuck in Strelizia (or Apus), but can activate her body at some distance (an improved Fafner ending)
(5a) but the Strelizia is stuck in some orbit which only comes within range of Earth once a year (Tanabata ending)

This time the writing at least back to average melodramatic Anime bullshit. It's still trite, and kinda sappy - but it's least not totally illogical like it has been for the last few weeks. Also, the visuals did receive a huge upgrade, there was even some character acting and beautiful backgrounds. Also the Diebuster-esque framing and shot compositions are back! Those were the reasons I've even started watching this show in the first place.
Overall, once again, a pretty mediocre package - laden enough with pretty pictures to make me docile for 20 Minutes.

Now all we need is a song to rally the allied fleet and defeat the enemy. Wait, that's Macross.

Episode title is Darling in the Franxx.

Leave the series hanging and piss off the remaining viewers. Or the ending is unsatisfying and they make a movie or 2 that delivers a more satisfying conclusion.

More than enough. One episode of building up tension, with minor victories won at great cost, half an episode of POWER OF LOVEing everything into daijobu and half an episode of epilogue, including the pink-head un-cabbaging; just like YuYuYu.

AO would have been slightly better if it wasn’t a sequel.

Any sequel that treats the original characters as fanservice tends to be of questionable quality. AO wasn't bad, it just... didn't live up to its forebearer.

This boils down the inclusion of Imaishi perfectly. This hastily drawn scribble is better than any other aspect of the show, lol.

You are too kind... AO was a convoluted mess, while Eureka Seven is one of THE great mecha shows of the 2000 (despite me not being a huge fan of it)

I was actually going to say something similar lol.
I genuinely like that drawing more than the show. But I also love Imaishi, so...
