actually having the characters trying to achieve their goals after being rejected makes it feel so much more, well, realistic to me.

Yes, it's good the show is honest about that.
Btw, this almost never happens, but this time I like some of the secondaries more than the protagonist. Nothing against Hiro, but I feel Ichigo's and Goro's struggles much more interesting. Both gud imo. Goro is THE good boi in this show, I enjoy him quite a bit.
Though I think Hiro cpuld be become more interesting now that he is aware of Ichigo's feelings. A tough spot he was in at the end of episode 14.

Apparently I'm watching a dating anime?
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

So the new episode is a little behind the scenes feature.
Does anybody know when the normal episodes resume?
Not complaining though, I enjoy features like this.

Watched episode 15. It encapsulates to me what I feel about the whole show I think. I like it and enjoy it, but I think when it gets into more serious territry it just doesn't reach greatness.
Also, I don't think the show is even hiding the fact that it borrows from so many other anime and manga. And that isn't inherently a bad thing.
But since spotting all these seems to be something we all enjoy, some of the elements in the last episode REALLY reminded me of a certain other story I won't name so I don't spoil it. But the elements I am refering to are
SPOILER: Show
the fact that this place that the characters were supposed to infiltrate was a man made structure, it seemed to protect itself, and the klaxosaurs (which apparently originate from this place) seem to carry fetuses
.
If this is more than a reference I suspect the direction the story might go in the next episodes, and I wonder how that connects to the rest of Franxx.

If there was something that was a let down to me, it has to be that this:
actually having the characters trying to achieve their goals after being rejected makes it feel so much more, well, realistic to me.

isn't a thing anymore after just one episode and it seems to have been dropped or maybe it was never the point. I dunno.
It took complexity away from both Goro and Ichigo IMO.

I'm jumping in only now, I've watched episode 1 today.

The plot feels like a bunch of main themes from NGE in the Gurren Lagann universe. I must say that I liked it more than I expected, but the amount of times I thought "that's a Eva reference!" ruined the experience a bit.

I also find the fanbase of this show really annoying, but that's not the show's fault.

I sometimes wonder how many of the references people attribute to Evangelion are from older shows. Hell, I get the feeling many of the people that deride Darling in the Franxx for copying Evangelion haven't even watched Eva!
Obviously not talking about this place, but I get that impression from other places in the internet. The amount of people that pretend to know things without having watched them is infuriating.
Of course, I'm not saying Darling doesn't have references, that would be ridiculous, but they haven't negatively impacted my experience at all, aside from a "huh, I know that" feeling.

Sorry Joseki, this isn't addressed specifically to you, it's just something I've been thinking about.

There's definitely a lot of "Eva-stuff" that has orgins in Mazinger Z and Devilman, among many other works.
But I'd say a lot of the stuff in Darling is specifically Eva.
Can't 100% confirm that though.

In episode 1, as I recall, 016 did do a lot of the Shinji mannerisms, and 002 was a bit like Mari at one point, but that was about it in terms of specifics (rather than generic mecha tropes).

By now, it's more common for it to be likened to Eureka Seven (Dominic/Anemone variant) when it comes to robot titles.

EDIT -- my 20,000th post. Blimey!

Well, especially in the battle episodes before Ep 10, there are plenty of references to Eva combat dialogue (best example being the paralells before the cude Klaxo and before Ramiel/6th)

Are orange interfaces and enemies with cores common in mecha?

Hiroyasu Kobayashi, khara's CGI director, is credited as 3D producer for FranXX. I'd say that most of the visual similarities in the interfaces are because of that.

By the way I saw the first 7 episodes. I really Ichigo so far, she seems to be the only relatable character in the show to me. I'm quite puzzled by the tone of this series, I don't know if it should be lighthearted or thought provoking, but at the moment it's failing to be either of those.

I don't really feel like watching more but since it's the only show I'm following this season I'll probably watch it all.

It becomes better starting with episodes 6 and 7.
But I am myself still confused with the tone.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"

Can't 100% confirm that though.

Anno wears his influences on his sleeve. I've suddenly become addicted to Ultraman and you can really see the marks it left on him. The ending of 2.22 is a shameless ripoff loving homage to Ultraman Nexus vs Dark Zagi.

At any rate, I binged watched the show up through episode 15. A lot of the tropes and story elements in this show do feel very familiar and well-worn, but I don't know that they're specific to Eva. I've seen the same stuff pop up in a lot of other anime and video games, particularly the Shin Megami Tensei series. The character writing is pretty good for the most part and helps keep the story sailing along pretty nicely when there's not a lot of mech action. I'd heard about episode 14 the day it aired, and
SPOILER: Show
it did strike me as extremely obnoxious contrived writing just to milk some stupid drama that didn't need to happen, but fortunately episode 15 quickly put it to bed and hopefully we don't have any more nonsense like that. It reminded me of Cross Ange, and not in a good way.

It's pretty decent. I'll stick with it for a couple weeks and see how things develop from here!
Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

I've now on par too.

Episode 14 seemed to deliver the struggles I wanted, sadly they only lasted about 13 minutes into episode 15. I don't think any of the character is suffering as much as they should from what they get through, and none of the characters in the losing end of the love triangles seem to care much about "getting cucked".

Unintended childhood meeting; forced separation; memories erased; chance meeting in later life leading to a relationship; another separation attempt, but forestalled by recovery of key memories of a promise that were supposed to have been erased.

This was feeling familiar, but I couldn't place it until this evening - that's the plot of the original 1993 OVA of Oh! My Goddess. (Elements of it also match Elfen Lied, of course, but not nearly so closely.)

Next ep preview is out - and it's a slice-of-life episode seemingly without any kind of followup from the previous one.

That said, Mitsuru looks somehow... less punchable with his new hairdo.
