Re-watching Soul Eater nearly a decade after watching it air live. A lot more fun binge-watching than I remember the week-to-week wait made it seem. The atmosphere of it is very Halloweenish which I am digging.

Today was episode 2 of Haganai NEXT which had the club watching a homoerotic film as well as the introduction of Maria's big sister Kate with whom they seem to not get along for the moment. Best scene hands down is when Sena reads out loud the lewd scene from her video game in the laptop and the beeps that are introduced whenever an obscene word is uttered. :D And I don't even know if the same is said for the Japanese audio because I watch the show in English...

Can't say I'm watching at the moment but interest in Sailor Moon has reemerged that I may watch the entire series soon. Or at least the Crystal adaption.

Fate/Apocrypha

I will be honest and say I stayed away from this series because I kind of saw it being like Yu Gi Oh which I hate to this day as I hated the card for every move stuff it just got on my nerves after a while. So glad though Fate is not like this in fact I like that it takes the concept of male and female heroes in history and runs with it and really clever way that's more believable than how the 80's Highlander did it, in that magic cause the switch between casual dress and weapons and armour it just fits better with characters like Jeanne d'Arc and works really works.

I also like some of the gender switching like with Mordred and that her dad is also female making the King Arthur legend even more strange yet you realize this could still fit and that scribes may have changed it from female to male due to the later medieval sexism as a female British ruler was not accepted fully until you get to Mary and Queen Elizabeth 1 period so this a very clever spin on things not being as they appear and it explains why the first words out of Mordred's mouth are "Don't call me woman."its a very clever play on the negativity of the class system as knights viewed themselves as very high up and women were considered under them and only for child bearing.

I realize that they made a lot of the guys in here look more feminine clearly to appeal to Yaoi fans but at the same time I kind of liked that as its a common misconception that ancient worlds followed modern gender dynamics as they didn't and its well known that there were men who dressed as flamboyantly as women in these periods and had just as much jewellery so in that way this also strangely works in Fates favour to shows this as a nice break from the norm. I also like that you get flash backs to the heroes previous lives of the heroes its a nice touch and allows you to see who they were and what they did and what there desires and wishes are.

Having put Shiki to one side again after the rather underwhelming episode where the doctor vivisects (necrosects?) his wife, I've just finished watching GitS:Arise (the original OVAs plus the TV finale).

As yet another GitS continuity, it works fine -- it imports some of the aesthetics of the later GitS manga, especially in the cyberspace sections, both in look-and-feel, and in that Makoto has her robot helpers along with her, so doesn't fit as a prequel to anything. That said, the c1990 vision of the world of the future (and the not-the-Iraq War) is being rapidly encroached upon by the present day (even at the time of making), and not in a good way.

I've also been casting around for other series to watch, and tried a couple of episodes of Pandora in the Crimson Shell Ghost Urn. You could tell that it was minor Shirow (and not in a good way like Healthy Drive or Ghost Hound); at least it refrained from importing all his fetishes. Dropped after two episodes.

Picked up from the backlog, 2013's Gifu Dodo : Kanetsugu and Keiji, which is being a nice change of pace after a couple of episodes.

If you don't mind filler episodes watch the 90s anime, but if you want a 1:1 adaptation of the manga then go with Crystal. Or watch both series. ^_^

Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan.

Okay for the record I really hate vore because its nightmare fuel and a horrific way to die, so imagine my surprise when this bat shit crazy show turns the idea on its head and has some one piloting from inside a dragons stomach its the biggest what the fuck ever and yet this show takes it and makes it work.

Its funny very humorous and made me laugh a lot in places its the kind of thing on paper if you read it you'd go this will never work but thy made it work and the lead cast are funny and great and its a really fun offering and I think the lead has serious anxiety similar to Shinji but it manifests very differently in that she just doesn't know when to stop speaking and goes off on tangent but this is also very fun to see because its a nice change from the norm.

My only nit pick is the casual sexism about women and military and there emotions and the sexual harassment jokes (Which don't land and are not funny on any level) but I did do some research on this and Japan does in modern day have a low number of women in the military its first female jet fighter piolt Misa Matsushima only came along in 2018 so the anime is a reflection of the outdated attitudes which are dying out in the west.

Oh and the skin tight Eva like suit makes no logical sense here its pure fan service but doesn't work story wise as if you want to stop literal battery acid eating your suit its need to be very thick not skin tight, and its implied in the second episode that if your in there to long it eats the suit away. To the animes credit though it has no scene where all the guys see it with holes.

Edit
SPOILER: Show
The only plot line I'm not liking in this is the one about the shady guy saying they need the piolts to fall in love with guys so they can shatter there hearts and harden them, its not the romance that's the issue its that doing this to someone in real life would have massive consequences to both genders mental health first for the betrayer who is ordered to do it and the betrayer who feel the pain and loss of being taken for a ride and its just a really mean spirited plot line

It also hurts the animes final big time as the idea that you can have more than one form of love is subverted to late to have any real impact and the bury your gays trope in this ones really bad and feels like a sudden slap to the face and the person who is to blame for it basically gets off scot free when he should have been thrown from his position of power as clearly a human sacrifice wasn't needed all along he was just keeping the tradition alive to benefit himself knowing that his forefathers sent others to there deaths

I can believe it, only because the Government is knowingly inane for placing sensitive information adjacent to the internet, not because the plan is clever.

With autumn closing in, a Q4 line-up that looks fairly thin, and a mostly wet weekend happening, I've been doing some random scatter-gun watching of backlog titles. Most likely of the bunch to be dropped after the 3 episode test so far is selector Infected WIXOSS, which looks like it is shaping up to be Mari Okada's Mean Girls' Club, when from the aesthetic it could and should have been more like [C] but without the wonky economics.

On the rewatch front, it's at around the 2/3 mark that Ghost Hound starts to go horribly wrong; while even with the CGI of a decade ago, Rocket Girls is still as delightful as I remember it.

View Original PostAlaska Slim wrote:Plots are really dumb... I can't even remember, was Gits: SAC plot this dumb?
SAC is one of those rare adaptations that exceeds the original manga, so it's not a fair standard for comparison. Measuring it against Human Error Processor or Man-Machine Interface, the latter whose aesthetics ARISE uses, is more to the point.

For something that followed the formula of "action + magical girl cyberspace with power levels + only explain WTF was really going on as an epilogue", it sufficed as something to amuse me of an evening now that it gets too dark too early for me to be out in the garden then, even if the one about the cyborg legs was pretty damn stupid.

I couldn't even follow what Bato and his Sniper pal's motivation for fighting was.

Season almost over. I'll edit the other shows later.

Steins Gate 0: Massive disappointment might me be too nice for this one. I had always felt that adding stuff to the Steins Gate story was unnecessary, it had a good conclusion. The movie was already an unneeded ad on, but at least it was well made enough to justify is existence. 0 isn't well made at all.

The directing is a dull affair, a consequence of having a new director. The animation falls apart on every scene in witch the characters aren't standing still. The one thing that managed to come intact from the original is the soundtrack, and it isn't enough to salvage this.
These complaints wouldn't matter if the plot went to interesting places, but the good moments are few and far between and the new characters aren't anything really worth talking about. The tiny legal loli gets quite a few nice scenes spread here and there, but they feel insignificant in a 24 episode anime.

I felt like I had wasted my time at the end of this anime
5/10

Lupin V: Lupin was good, really good, go watch it. I have nothing else to say.
9/10

Happy Sugar Life: I expected this show to fall apart quickly, but it somehow managed to pull through and even had a good ending! All the fun from this one comes from the way the completely insane characters interact with each other. The main plot is actually the dullest part of the show when the two main characters are only interacting with each other. Only when they hit someone else does it get interesting.

Also, to give you an idea of the amount of mental problems every character has, the pedophile of the show is the comedic relief 90% of the time.
It's an odd show and it obviously will only appeal to a niche.

Auntie is best girl
7/10

Harukana Receive: Cute girls that might be lesbians play beach volleyball. Yeah, that tells all you need to know. Loads of fanservice with a generic sports story line in the back. That said, the anime is really good looking: drawn backgrounds, impressive looking animation. Also, you have this great upbeat soundtrack in every match.

Also, men never appear, they are only mentioned. Wouldn't want you getting distracted from the girls, I suppose.

6/10

There were 4 comedies this season, all of them good. Gokkudolls is the weirdest: barely animated, with a dark sense of humour and many, many jokes about the miserable idol life. It's the weakest of the four, but it has some of the funniest moments in all of them. 7/10
Grand Blue is the more generic of them. That said, even with occasionally dull jokes, it makes up for it with the VAs performance and the exaggerated expressions only animation can make. It also has some sort of plot about diving and maybe a romance, but it's barely noticeable. You'll probably need to read the manga to get a conclusion to that
8/10
Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro is my favourite of them all. The main character plays american/European games and has insane parkour skills. That alone would be reason enough to watch it, but the rest of that cast is equally ridiculous. You also have some pretty good fanservice moments here and there. Really, it's a incredibly funny anime.
9/10
The last is Asobi Asobase. Every single character in the cast is fantastic and the expressions they make manage to surpass the ones from Grand Blue. It has some incredibly surreal situations at times, witch will be followed by grounded moments seconds later. I don't know how they pull it of.
9/10

Angolmois: Genkou Kassenki: An historical drama about a battle the Japanese had again't the mongols. Said battle was irrelevant and is barely mentioned by the story books. A perfect choice for an historical drama.
The setting is enough to give it a shot, but the directing only has a couple of high point and the enormous cast only occasionally managed to garner sympathy from me. I'd call it all a bit above average.
The anime only has one big negative, the ridiculous filter they used. It only looks good on still shots. Add any motion and it becomes hideous. It doesn't help that the animation isn't anything special.

It's likely that I only like it has much as I do because the final episodes went all out

SPOILER: Show
and killed/raped/enslaved 90% percent of the characters, ending the anime with a mongol victory. A great bittersweet ending in witch only a few survive

7/10

Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight: I said Steins Gate 0 was a massive disappointment. This one is almost worse, despite being a better anime.

The first 3 episodes or so showed great promise: good directing, great animation, wonderful fight choreography. All a great setup for the rest of the show.
"It can only go up!" I thought. I was a moron. I expected the characters to develop and get more facets revealed with time. I expected good drama and tragic backstories. I'm basically watching the characters perform a theater piece every episode, so that wouldn't be a stretch, right?
Nothing ever happens, the character backstories are some of the most fluffy bullshit I've ever seen, not to mention said backstories are mostly super vague nonsense that could be used in any of the characters.

The two worst moments are likely Bananas backstory, witch is

SPOILER: Show
Some nonsense about her fearing the future and the responsibilities and separations that inevitably occur. Sounds good, does't it? But that first sentence is all the depth you get. It's never explained what exactly she fears or why, and that doesn't make for very interesting drama.

And the main characters relationship, that boils down to "I played with you when we were kids and we watched a theater play together!"
I kid you not, that was enough for the two of them to have an almost romantic bound. Also, they gifted each other hairpins, like anybody cares. What kind of fairy tale nonsense is that? Was it intentional? I hope it wasn't.

The character designs are generic as hell: Makes me think of those insufferable idol anime. Probably the same character designer or something.
There are no men in this anime for some reason, the only "male" is the giraffe. Why they did this I have no clue.

And despite all this, it isn't a bad show, but there is so much effort put into it. It should have a classic in the making. Instead, it's just tons of wasted potential.

Ghost Hound rewatch -- I had remembered the ending as disappointing and badly done, but had forgotten details. That was probably because it was just a total anti-climactic damp squib.

Captain Earth -- for the first three episodes it was shaping up as a so-so mech series, with a novel way for the main mech to combine out of parts, and a sub-MajPri style of antagonist faction from outer space. Then, episode 4. After it having been stated that should the bad guys reach Earth, Bad Things™ would happen, in this episode, the invaders (both of them) drive a truck carrying one of their mechs off a ferry from mainland Japan and into the good guys' Secret Main Base with its sea-front location on some small island. Bad Things™, however, do not happen. This is one of the dumbest things I've seen in anime in years. I think I lost the will to continue.

In other viewing -- I still have the last episode of Yama no Susume to go, but at least after the mid-season MISUNDERSTANDINGS there was finally a bit of consolation climbing, even if that expedition did slide gracefully into being YuruCampΔ at points.

Also up to episode 6 in Gifu Dodo and episode 3 in Sengoku Collection, which episodes were amusing to watch in quick succession.

Bloom Into You episode 1

Because I had already read the first chapter of the manga, I pretty much knew how the episode was gonna go with it culminating in Nanami's confession to Yuu. Didn't think it would also after the ED credits include the scene of the girls talking about the student council president election but go figure. As for how the show feels, it plays out like a melodrama that can be somewhat interesting or a bit boring at times but due to me not pursuing the manga beyond said chapter, I could be wrong in how the rest plays out so I say bring it on.

M3: The Dark Metal
Image

An already-forgotten Satelight show that is one part low-rent Eva clone, one part curse-based J-horror. A fairly inert affair despite its Mari Okada pedigree. Most notable for Natsuiri being an eye-poppingly awful Gendo expy, and the final episode concluding with

SPOILER: Show
an astonishingly happy ending for what is very markedly a horror-themed series; even the E.T.-cum-kaiju toothmonster gets redeemed.

Bryger episode 15:
It's still not a good show by any means, but at least this episode showed some gosh darned honest potential in the episodic plot department. The episode actually has a bit of a twist, as it's revealed that an evil co-researcher had stolen Bryger's supposedly totally unique size-changing technology. Instead of applying this miracle science to a giant robot, he has instead turned a hollowed-out asteroid into a kind of ghetto Death Star that can perpetrate sneak attacks by approaching enemy bases as a small chunk of space rock and then morphing back to normal size almost at zero range. It is an intensely cool enemy concept, but unfortunately everything else, including the mecha action, is still terribly underwhelming.

Interestingly enough, a far superior "giant robot team vs. super mafia" show began airing in Japan mere months before Bryger. For the longest time, Goshogun was known in the west only by the film Time Étranger, a curveball sequel that completely switches genres to this comparably muted dreamscape narrative with nary a giant robot in sight. Such a genre shift might sound unprecedentedly bizarre, especially considering how mecha shows of the era were supposed to drive toy robot sales above all, but having now seen the TV series, I can see how it sets the precedent for bold genre iconoclasm. To be fair, Goshogun TV is still structurally a classic giant robot tale, but it's also a hugely ahead of its time absurdist genre satire, way beyond even Tomino's comedy mecha output. It's a very good-natured, warm satire, but that doesn't take anything away from the subversiveness of the proceedings.

Image
Hey, this guy looks pretty cool.

The craziness doesn't really peak until the final five episodes, and the early parts of the show are much more standard genre fare, but even from early on there are notable indications that things are going to be different. Although Goshogun's promotional artwork focuses on the cool-person trio piloting the titular robot, the actual protagonist is professor Sanada's young son Kenta, who in a more typical super robot show would simply be the audience surrogate character in the sidelines. The important story here is his journey of self-discovery, and Goshogun the robot is a surprisingly peripheral aspect of it. Once the final episodes roll in and Kenta's late father reveals in a pre-recorded holographic message what the mysterious Beamler has in store for Kenta and humanity at large, things truly get wild. I'm not going to spoil the details, but it involves sentient space energies, trippy Newtype visions, machine angst, a rebellion led by a modern-day Joan of Arc, fast food based comedy and fourth wall breaking, and the final episode takes the absolute piss out of the whole concept of a climactic boss fight. I would've never expected such an anarchic take on super robot anime from the year 1981, but here it is and it's glorious. And it's only 26 episodes, so it's a manageable watch, so give it a chance if you can tolerate old-ass robot cartoons.

Time Étranger is of course a hell of a thing in its own right, but it's also been extensively covered elsewhere, so I'm just going to add that while it does work as a standalone film (it spells out the required baseline info, i.e. the characters are a famous former hero team), watching the TV series first does enhance the experience. One impressive thing the film does in relation to its predecessor is that it implies there's been multiple seasons worth of further unseen Goshogun adventures between the two. Sometime after Docooga's defeat the original, miniboss villains Bundle, Kernagul and Cuttnal have paid their debt to society and become good guys to the extent that they're now considered heroes on par with the Goshogun trio, and it is said they even traveled in space together, which hints at pretty tantalizing later non-plotlines. While I don't want to exaggerate Goshogun's media footprint, the situation is a bit like seeing Watchmen done with the actual Charlton characters.

Demon Prince Enma (2006 OVA):

A.K.A. Oh, there's a grim and serious version of this. Overall, not a bad Halloween playlist choice if you're looking for a supernatural horror anime that mostly plays itself straight. It's just four episodes long, and although it begins with this urban setting, there's a midpoint swerve that relocates the action to a very genre-traditional setting. It's a real wham moment, and although I have this nagging feeling it's the result of two different manga storylines being shakily welded together, I had a real visceral reaction to it. What I would consider the main flaw of the OVA has to do with the titular character Enma himself; horror requires the feeling of powerlessness, and in order for the rogue demons to be able to do their demonic things, the narrative forces Enma not be very good at taking care of the problem and sending them back to hell. I guess he gets to be a prince because he has big dick flame powers, but he's garbage at identifying possessed people, because there wouldn't be victim of the week otherwise.

Got tired of Gundam being so serious and kill 'em all so instead of going for one of the Gunpla series, I went ahead and watched the second episode of Double Zeta. My main motivation for wanting to finally tackle the much maligned show is because of Roux Louka, the certified hottie of which I keep a few NSFW pics  . Unfortunately, she didn't appear in the beginning and from what I hear isn't meant to for at least the first few episodes. If anyone could tell me which particular episode is her debut so I can move on through the ones before it in anticipation, I would be most grateful.

Found it strange how we were implying "things are going to get worse!", then we found out the corpse has apparently reached its fill of destruction & mayhem, and was going to fall apart regardless. Meh.

As the Q4 shows are starting to roll, my initial reaction has been "Come back, Captain Earth, all is forgiven!".

Apart from JoJo Vento Aureo, which can be taken as read until the part's bad reputation shows itself, I've so far tried two other of the new shows, which I'll spoiler in case anyone else was wanting to watch them.

RErideD  SPOILER: Show
As this one dropped 4 episodes at once, I watched the first three.
It has ABe character designs, the ghost of which can be seen from time to time in one of the girls.
The villain of the piece is a total stereotype of the evil arms manufacturer profiting from war, like out of the inter-war period.
It's like no-one on the creative staff has ever noticed Windows Update, even though it's reasonable that none of them have ever been in day-for-day release slip panics when late show-stoppers are found.
The MC having fallen down an ill-placed shaft, decides to climb into a coffin-like thing to hide from pursuers who are trying to kill him.
The assassin next sent after him seems to conceal anti-tank rifles about her person, and ground-attack aircraft with implausibly low stall speeds in her hammerspace.
So far : almost so bad it's good.

Sora Umi  SPOILER: Show
The PV made it look like cute girls do cute underwater things in space, and given the success of many of the cute girls do cute but unusual things series, this looked the most promising from the PVs I'd seen. The wacky premise was really not that much worse than GaruPan's was, and I was even prepared to ignore the dubious physics of these artificial water-moons.

I hadn't expected the truly bizarre mechanism used for their fishing, the wacky MoTW generator ecology of these "built in the last decade" orbital seas, had never before seen a CGDC[whatever]T where the MC turned out to be such an obnoxious little brat, nor one where they were doing assertive grrlpower things incompetently (in space).

As a comedy, it was even more un-funny than the running gags in Planet With, and as a cute-girls do unusual things, it makes HaiFuri look like a masterpiece.
So far : like a colony

Just watched episode 2 of Bloom Into You. The ambiguous imagery and beautiful music playing during such sequences sort of reminds me of the romance of Kare Kano but with a yuri twist. Right now, I feel like finishing my first volume manga and see how far this anime version episode reaches up to the manga's last page.

Started watching Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans two days ago, really enjoying it so far

At about their respective 2/3 marks --

Gifu Dodo has turned out to be more political intrigue and less slapstick samurai superhero than the first couple of episodes had suggested it was going to be.

Sengoku Collection is revealed to be an episodic set of whimsical stories linked by only the conceit that the principals are elseworlds versions of the same set of historical characters. In all, a winning entry in the "Cute Sengoku Generals Do Cute Things" genre.

This season, after a couple of episodes apiece --

JoJo is being, much as expected, Saturday morning fare, with the usual sub-titling issues (of the "read Zipper-Man, hear Sticky Fingers" kind)

SSSS Gridman rates as "mostly harmless", with a side of wondering how much of a hash is going to be made of the reveal of what it is that is deeply weird about the setting (beyond having OverJustice running the kaiju generator).

Index III fits somewhere in the middle (I can't remember exactly what the subs read when I heard the nickname BiriBiri), and I now understand all the remarks about Kuroko's voice. For a change, when I recognised some foreign landmark it was actually from personal recollection, this time spotting the Pont d'Avignon before being told where the action was starting. I was surprised to find that notorious forgery, the Donative of Constantine, referenced in a work of fiction that wasn't Dante's Inferno, even if it just turns out to be yet another weird religious item from the lands of the Far West for the purposes of the plot.

The last part of the main -monogatari story - Zokuowarimonogatari - starts in nine days time; length and number of episodes seem to be unknown at present.
