Still, what I liked about Yatterman Nights is that it's a sendup to the three-idiot villain team (think Team Rocket), making them both the center of the story, and the heroes, for once.
The work is also not just a subversion,

Very little that was on offer appealed, and of those tried, none really caught.

I didn't really get what your issue with the ending is, the way I see itSPOILER: Showthe "revolution" that takes place is Utena rejecting Akio's sexist ideals to the point she literally leaves his world. I loved that. Anthy follows suit, while Akio is just confused at all this due to his narrow vision of the world.
I actually didn't necessairily see Utena and Anthy as a gay pairing (the definitely are in the movie though). I once got called out for this on tumblr, like I got called a cunt lol. Even though I'm not saying my interpretation is THE ONE, it's just how I honestly saw it. I'm rewatching the show, so my opinion might change. Not that they couldn't be gay, I just felt there were no direct hints.
Anyways, what was your issue with the ending exactly?I actually feel it's pretty much the same as the movie ending, the movie just tells everything in a very condensed way, and then also shows that the world Utena and Anthy escape to isn't perfect either (you can see it at the end in the background), implying their future will be an upwards battle, much like EoE actually.
If you liked Utena, I really recommend Yurikuma Arashi by the same director. IMO it doesn't reach the same level, but it's very good. Now that show is gay as hell lol. Has a great message too.
kuribo-04 wrote:Now I know what you meant!SPOILER: ShowI agree it's sad Utena and Anthy are separated, but I see the ending more as a metaphor for leaving Akios ideals behind. So that's why it takes Anthy more effort than Utena, she was completely brainwashed by Akio since she was a child, but even her can see the truth in the end and leave. I'd say it's strongly implied both will find each other again.
Btw, that last scene of Anthy leaving moved me to tears lol, it is so well done in conjunction with the music (that music track is called Baisier). Another scene that had me tear eyed is episode 37 I believe, after Anthy tries to jump from the building and Utena tells her she couldn't leave Anthy behind, with the music track Hikarisasu Niwa-Illusion, it's a scene that encapsulates so well what the show is about.
Btw, another theme I got from Utena was that of your believes being shattered. Utena is very opimionated due to her encounter with the Prince, but then that prince turns out to be manipulative, in that case, are her convictions even hers? That was so interesting to me, and it's something so potentially scary, but I think in the end Utena takes what she got from her childhood encounter regardless but improves on herself.
And yeah, tumblr has some agressive people lol, but it's too late for me haha. I enjoy the site and have quite a bit of followers there.
I actually understand that Utena as a gay character was probably important to this person, and it's easy to get passionate about that stuff, but I didn't mean any harm, I just talked about the show how I understood it, anything else would have been dishonest. And I'm also open to being corrected, I don't stubbornly stick to one opinion, so I didn't quite get that reaction.
I also think that was bold of them to show Anthy as a woman of colour as that's so rare in anime and there were some scenes that broke my heart in the series.
I think its the issue with social media in that people forget an avatar is a real person
This is very true, and I might have been guilty of that myself during my teen years lol. I wasn't rude to anybody who wasn't being an ass, but there is no excuse in any case.
