I've only watched one Episode, but it has this weird charm to it; it's brimming with passion something like an indie band would. You don't get this very often in Anime, I feel. FLCL comes to mind - but for perspective, if FLCL was made by Pink Floyd, Uraharara would be more like a High School Band. I adore the design work, though.

Have you ever watched two TV shows that seem really different, only to notice how similar they are upon re-watching them? That's sort of what I've experienced upon watching both Outlaw Star and Dirty Pair. Think about it:
Both series have two female human protagonists, one who is traditionally "feminine" and one who is not.
Both series' main characters pilot a red spaceship
Both series have a cat-like creature as one of the main characters
The protagonists of both series are mercenaries who are seen as "good" only in comparison to the villains they oppose.

Yet despite all those similarities, the two shows feel completely different. Here, by the way, is a piece of Dirty Pair fan-art I found (don't worry, it's clean):

Cross Ange episode 11 - I watch this series English dubbed and I hate the way Rosalie sounds, but I still watch it because there is still ADV royalty that I can count on to get me out of that particular funk. On another topic based on this episode, I didn't notice that during the flashing of past lives in which Ange and Salamandinay were friends, one in particular of them in bed makes me wonder why they never went that route in terms of establishing their bond in later episodes since Ange already has a harem with both genders covered. :D

Attack on Titan No offence intended if you like this I'm just not getting the vibe and I find the lead insanely annoying please someone tell me does he ever stop being a know it all wanker or is he that way all season?

EDIT Okay so its better but it takes ages to get there like once your past episode 14 the paces corrects itself and the lead starts to wake the hell up, but I can see why people bail in the first half of the series because it is such hard going due to the bad pacing.

Violet Evergarden Loved this, really good solid take on ptsd and the after effects of war.

Devil man Crybaby Not far in can't comment.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid I don't normally go for stuff like this but this is kind of funny despite that the US dub people who wrote this don't understand that some stuff is really insulting to the LGBT crowd due to them changing the context on certain lines but this aside if you can ignore this issue it is a heartfelt and sweet anime with fan service.

I could only stand to see that little shit acting up towards the adults since he was a little child with Mikasa always dragging him away for his own good until episode 2! I haven't seen any other episode since even though I own the first season on Blu Ray. :irked:

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

Beautiful beautiful beautiful ending, which should appeal to the members of this forum. I will happily recommend this to anyone who enjoys good fiction, with the caveat that you really should watch Fate/Zero first, as there are many bits of Unlimited Blade Works that make far more sense with the context provided by Fate/Zero.

(Gilgamesh alone is reason enough to watch these.)

Unlimited Blade Works ending spoilers  SPOILER: Show
Very much an NGE ending, where the protagonist learns to like himself. Treats themes of heroism, selfishness etc. Also you have a giant vagina monster at the end with a guy inside it which is a tool used to end the world.

Watched Devilman Crybaby. It wasn't bad, but not as great as the internet made it out to be. Maybe two more episodes explaining the blond kid's motivation and what God is would have helped. As a newcomer to this series, I had more questions than answers by the end. The sex was also in overabundance lol.

But the aesthetic both visually and thematically was cool, though.

^Yea, I have similar feelings on the series. I'm looking forward to rewatching it in like a year or so with different expectations for it. I screwed up waiting too long to watch the damn series, man.
-----------
Anyway, I've had a really nice time watching anime of late. Seen some really fine series;

Rewatched Kiznaiver. Remember Kiznaiver? The last I watched of it was when it was premiering weekly in Spring 2016. I liked it, but I think I had a bit of a hard time following it for some reason, which is weird because it's not too complicated of a series. But, I really enjoyed it on this watch through and it probably turned out being my favorite Trigger work. Great cast of characters, great animation style and a pretty nice message. I do feel like the series makes a misstep or two during the last couple episodes, but nothing that left me with a bad taste or anything.

Watched Mobile Fighter G Gundam, which was truly awesome. Easily the best non UC Gundam series I've watched and if not for Zeta easily my favorite Gundam work. The Shuffle Alliance truly ruled; Chibodee pouring the bourbon on his mobile suit was one of my favorite moments in anime history. Also, I cried when Master Asia died. RIP

Death Parade: Sort of a weird game themed annimay that gives off slight Tokyo Ghoul vibes. Sort of melodramatic at times, but actually really good. Has nice takes on existence and fate, while being kind of silly. Full of twists and some touching moments. Recommended.

Hyouka: A bit boring at times and kind of pointless at points, but I guess that's kind of like the point of the show? Point. The animation was really clean and the characters played off one another well, but the series just kind of made me miss Haruhi Suzumiha(which I wasn't even that crazy about!). I liked the school festival arc the best what with the cooking and the quiz show and that guy wearing the Saturn costume. If I had to rate it I'd give it a nice 6.75. It's popularity kind of surprises me, but what the hell do I know?

This season of My Hero Academia I've been really happy with. The first episode of the seaosn was probably my least favorite episode of the series so far, but since then I feel like it's just constantly ripped. Can't wait to see what happens to All Might next week!
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

I'm glad you've enjoyed it. I've also watched it while it was airing and remember it pretty fondly. It's not a masterpiece, but I like how it isn't afraid to depict teenagers as the hormone-driven retarted people. I really enjoyed the humor that resulted due to hyper-dramatic screaming about shit that does not matter at all. But most of all I LOVED the visual execution. imho, this is one of the best looking shows of the decade.

View Original PostJoy Evangelion wrote:Death Parade

I like how it looks, despite feeling somewhat sterile. I've enjoyed it enough - but I would have preferred less melodrama. I think a more subdued presentation and I could have taken it seriously. It's similar to Kiznaiver in how the people act, but it's not as funny, because the problems in Death Parade are mostly larger-than life high-consequences Anime Bullshit (instead of the teen-bullshit of Kiznaiver). And the characters act like they suffer from hyperactivity, despite being drawn like adults. This disconnect kinda ruined it for me.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the show, Kyo-ani really know what they're doing. They are masters in creating places and people. Now, I'd love them to use this expertise in a premise I actually care about from the get-go.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School:

It's pretty ironic that a game series that does anime bullshit so well is so bad as an actual anime. But of course, considering the basic building blocks of the franchise, any attempt at adapting it on television would be a crazy uphill battle, especially in light of the modern dominance of the one-cour model. While Danganronpa might be infamous for its gorehound elements, the bloody bits only form a very small fraction of the total game experience. The majority of the time is spent on getting to know a large, outlandish cast of potential culprits, victims and traitors and doing dating-sim free time activities. Then an off-screen murder happens, and it’s followed by decently long, methodical investigation and trial phases, and everything is peppered with heaps of ridiculous lore. The phrase "wild ride" gets thrown around a lot in connection to DR, but it's a ride characterized by long, gentle rises, followed by sudden corkscrew drops. This dynamic cannot be replicated in a short TV series, and that's why I completely skipped the first Danganronpa anime, which was a retelling of the first game, condensed into scarily short 13 episodes. Based on what I've heard, I chose correctly: if you're a non-gamer like me and you want a proper Danganronpa experience, you sit your ass down and watch someone skilled do a blind let's play. Just let yourself be slowly swept in by the rhythm of the franchise watching someone else play, and then you can participate in their incoherent rage when you hear the body discovery jingle and find your favorite character hanging from a ceiling fan.

Spoilers for Danganronpa's Hope's Peak Academy Saga, so everything that's come before V3: Killing Harmony.
SPOILER: Show
Image

So, anyway, to its credit, Danganronpa 3 actually tries something very different from a straight-up game adaptation: it's an ambitious prequel-sequel combo intended to bookend all of the games in the Hope's Peak Academy Saga (including the bizarre near-kusoge spin-off Ultra Despair Girls), and it has double the episodes to play around with. But then again, since the two story halves, Despair Arc and Future Arc, are so different from one another, the end result is just two one-cour shorties, now burdened with an even bigger crossover cast, and as you might have guessed, the bloat absolutely murders the end result. Ambition can be a good thing, but so is knowing your limits. Danganronpa 3 is a bad anime, but it's the sort of bad anime that gets my script-doctoring juices flowing, since its badness largely results from mismanagement of good raw material. So here's my idle brainstorming as to how Danganronpa 3 might have been made good:

Starting with the most essential thing, Future Arc is ditched altogether. Seriously, just amputate the whole thing and recycle the few good parts it has elsewhere, so that Despair Arc gets to have all 24 episodes to itself. Despair Arc is the saveable part; it is misguided but not rotten like Future Arc, which is just an unholy garbage patch. Just consider what Future Arc attempts to do:

- It attempts to be a sequel and a grand narrative conclusion to all of the DR properties so far, including Despair Arc.
- It has its own cast of anime-OG do-not-steal characters interacting with the established game characters, so it’s a case of a big cast meeting a giant cast.
- It features yet another killing game, although with a reduced "hardcore" XFL ruleset.
- It attempts to be action show.

This last item is especially bonkers, seeing how loaded the cart already is. I mean, the mainline games do have some action scenes in them, but nothing to this extent. Future Arc has so many fights, chases and explosions that in places it vaguely feels like what a shitty American Netflix-original movie version of Danganronpa might look like. What fuels these fights is the characters being rash, impulsive and stupid, even though these guys are supposed to be the top tier leaders of Future Foundation, and a majority of them are grown-ass adults. They’re made to be chumps and jobbers to a lore-deflating degree, and I'm pretty sure the people working on the anime realized this, when we consider the big finale.

Future Arc ends with what is basically the Danganronpa version of the Justice League popping in, saving the day, undoing all plot consequences to people the audience actually cares about, and then delivering a rousing message that going the anime route is bad and that you should abandon it and join all the cool kids at the game side of things. Seriously, that's the anime's equivalent to the metagaming weirdness in the mainline product, and it's a bold move, although certainly not enough reason to bother watching the show. I would be lying if I said this big ending team-up didn't give me some visceral "Oh, yes!" thrills, but even then, taken as a whole, it's not on a par with the tantalizing possibilities the preceding game was coyly hinting at, such as wild alternate character designs and cyborgs and whatnot. It feels to me like a triumphant fanservice finale like this would've worked better had it been saved up for the next mainline game, considering what an absolute fist-pumping moment DR2's smaller-scale version of the same event was. Now it seems like the franchise blew its load entirely in the wrong place.

Okay, so let's continue doctoring our hypothetical Danganronpa anime, that's just Despair Arc with double the episode count. The entire thing is now one big dark prequel, and in a perfect world it would be to Danganronpa what Ga-Rei Zero was to Ga-Rei. Our cast of characters is the cast of Danganronpa 2, the second mainline game. In terms of the total DR mythos, DR2 is kind of a side story; it tells the tale of Junko's apprehended miniboss squad and their trials and tribulations during the time when the despair near-apocalypse is winding down. Despair Arc is the tragic origin story of this goon squad, detailing how these genius teenagers were corrupted to the dark side, becoming vectors of social unrest that eventually culminated in a limited nuclear exchange. It is the darkest chapter in a bigger story, and I guess a more recent example would be Avengers: Infinity War; Where Thanos traveled around the cosmos collecting Infinity Stones, Junko sneaked around the Hope's Peak campus mindbreaking hamster owners. There is a solid skeleton of a dramatic structure in the product we got. The first couple of episodes depict the everyday life of Class 77-B, the would-be goons. Then Junko arrives, and it's all villainy from there on, culminating in a sick, sad finale that heralds the despair near-apocalypse. A good story outline on paper.

But the thing is, people who are going to watch a Danganronpa 2 prequel want to see it for the game’s beloved characters (everybody's got their particular favorites), but the constrained one-cour thing we got is too busy setting up the plot dominos for story arcs to come, and thus the characterization has no room to breathe. Almost everyone is reduced to their respective talent-related gimmick, and the episodes are just checklists of things required to happen. Hugely important scenes pass by without leaving any emotional impact because there's nothing to hold on to. Junko's arrival gives the proceedings more zest but not much more focus, and the totality remains too scattershot for her to qualify as a proper (villain) protagonist.

A particular and very serious mid-series misstep is the anime's treatment of The Tragedy of Hope's Peak Academy, which is just unbearably hacky directing and so very un-Danganronpa. In the games, violence and death are always sad, terrifying things. Sure, the executions are infamous for their goofiness, but the underpinning emotion is always horror and sadness because the violence is being visited upon people the player has gotten to know and probably like, too. Obviously, there's no same horror response if they’re being viewed by some rando watching anime death compilations on Youtube, and it is this crowd the anime seemingly wants to cater to with its depiction of this turning-point moment. Whereas the murders in DR games traditionally happen off-screen and we only see the grisly aftermath (and a somewhat abstract comic strip recreation of the crime during the trial's conclusion), Despair Arc goes all slasher with the student council. If you remember Another's pie fights, you know what you're in for, but with more gross-out upmanship. It really feels like The Tragedy of Hope's Peak Academy and some later torture scenes are bones thrown to the edgelord sub-fandom of the franchise, since the very final scene of super-horror actually goes for more somber shock and hopelessness.

Zeroing in on what I, as the god-emperor of Despair Arc, would do to fix things, well, go more episodic with the characters. Another particular misstep of the anime was the way Junko corrupts her victims. Because there's no room for anything else, she just uses batch brainwashing to turn the whole posse at once. Not much devilish tempting there. If she got to pick out the students one by one, breaking them by poking at their psychological weak points, the structure of the show would then actually resemble the Danganronpa formula, where people die one by one, usually after some egging on by Monokuma. The last few un-turned ones could then be hit with the same despair bomb; the show could also be playful with this, populating the usual end-game survivor spots with more surprising choices like perhaps Peko, the Impostor, Mahiru…

Another important narrative fix would be to go easy on the lore. The Danganronpa big picture deeplore is both complex and hugely silly, and I doubt any amount of Christopher Nolan-ing would make things like the political status of the Hope's Peak Academy or the Parade protest movement make much sense. Since we don't need to follow the administration and the teaching staff as much in order to build up for an underwhelming Future Arc, just keep the camera close to the 77-B characters and watch as the corrupting influence of Junko seems to warp the very reality around them. Of course, after she recruits (for lack of a better word) Izuru, Junko is momentarily SUPERHAX, so to give the doomed people of the class some illusion of a fighting chance, perhaps a two-cour Despair Arc could actually integrate elements of Danganronpa Zero into itself, ie. not the lore minutiae but the basic idea of Junko being incapacitated, but it still being part of her keikaku because she spews out new villain gambits like a firehose and she's planned ahead. Sure, the actual anime is crammed to hell and back, but there's oddly little acknowledgement towards DR:Zero, even though even Ultra Despair Girls basically got an entire episode for itself in Future Arc.

So, tl;dr, how to make Despair Arc good: two cours, No Future Arc, Junko is Thanos, turns people one by one; focus on established characters people want to see, no pie fights. Had to get that out of my system.

Interestingly enough, there's one kinda genuinely good piece of Danganronpa anime that offers a glimpse of what might have been possible: The Nagito bonus OVA. It's just this singular 25-minute thing, but since it features no anime-only idiot characters and is a sequel that needs to arrange no dominos, it actually gets to be itself, a workmanlike snippet of DR2 post-game content with, you know, proper character scenes where they talk with one another like actual people. Well, ridiculous anime people, but still. It even has dramatic stakes and some rewarding minor twists. So, if you were in a desperate need to know what happened to your DR2 favorites after the somewhat open-ended but hopeful ending of the game, spoilers, they're all alive and well, except for Kana Hanazawa, who died twice, but might still return as an AI robot at some later date.

And another genuinely good thing about Danganronpa 3, besides the unreal SS rank voice cast slumming in this otherwise hacky, low-rent production (video game adaptations, man), is the Despair Arc's opening animation that looks like it's plucked from some alternate reality where this thing was actually amazing. Here's a recommendation-spoiler safe Polsy link.

The ancient magus bride
This one I was really unsure about as social media has tried to paint it like its some fifty shades of grey abusive shit, the reality is that its none of that.

SPOILER: Show
Yes the girl sells herself in to slavery only to be released in the first episode at no time does the demon werewolf Elias Ainsworth abuse her or treat her poorly he treats her with the up most respect she is given the freedom to walk around later in the series and do her own things she is not a prisoner she is never forced to have sex with him. Elias does put a tracking pendent on her but its clear why he does this and its not about control its about keeping her safe as her form of magic is very rare and he says if the Mage training is to much she can leave.

Yes there is a bath scene where he washes her (Off screen) but it's made clear later that he doesn't understand humanity or human modesty he openly admits it making it clear and says he wants to learn about it. He does refer to her tracking pendent as a collar and call her pup but in my view this might be a pack thing since he is in essence a demon werewolf and at no point are these lines said in a tone to degrade or belittle.

Its clear the writer understands the problematic power issue and over time resolves it and the marriage only comes up twice in the early episodes but gets put aside in favour of Elias and Chise growth as characters which is needed since Chise is an abuse victim who is still deeply depressed and has attempted suicide before and this does effect how magic works for her but this character build ensures that the deeper feelings for each they have feel more real and genuine later on.

This series is closer to the true beauty and the beast fairy tail as in the original version Beast let beauty see her father a lot she was not locked in the castle like the 90's Disney cartoon version which some how thinks that the beast was violent and abusive and needed taming when in the original fairy tail he wasn't.

He was the perfect gentleman but could be miserable due to his lack of humanity and he never hurt or touched beauty as he was in love with her and the only weird thing he did was every night asking beauty to marry him and she kept on rejecting him so this anime is in essence a true retelling and subvert of this type of tail and if you like that kind of thing its worth checking out

As well as having effectively picked up Darlifra from episode 18, and continuing with Toji no Miko as it heads to the final confrontations, I stuck with Last Period for the three episodes needed to get to the Casey and Friends cameo, but having accomplished that I see no reason to continue with it.

I've also given the 3 episode treatment to Yatterman Night, which probably would have worked a lot better if what it is affectionately subverting had been something from my childhood, and Dracula moves to Hinamizawa Shiki, which is being ever so slow and deliberate. Both, alas, so far fall far behind the trollish levels of amusement Darlifra is generating right now, so are at the very least on hold for the moment.

Yeah I did and the lesson I've learnt from this is ignore social media completely when it comes to anime as both this and miss kobayashi's dragon maid are great animes and are ones you don't watch out of context instead you watch them in full for good reason because the complete narrative changes the picture massively and both have great stories to tell and both got pissed on by social media for really stupid reasons due to stupid knee jerk reactions.

I've had Shiki on hold on Episode 5 for almost 2 years. When I finally finished it I felt like the payoff is satisfying enough to slog through the first Episodes.
Doesn't make the beginning any better, tho.

Cowboy Bebop episode 22

It took time for Andy's dumb mistaking Spike for Teddy Bomber shtick to set in for me but by the second half when they were dueling first in the elevator then on the roof in a creative battle more than made up for a dull first half.

I've never seen it, or even, AFAIK even had the opportunity to do so back in the day.

This has been a very uninteresting season for me.

DarliFra Ep20 - Nope. Don’t care anymore.

Food Wars! S3 Ep22 – The goodie chefs are facing the baddie chefs in a three-round, team battle. That’s all well and good, but who competes in the first round?: The main character.
Well, obviously the MC will compete, but in the first round? Surely you save them for the main event- the crucial, nail-biting, last-round decider?
You don’t put Hulk Hogan on the pre-show…

Hinamatsuri – I notice there are lot of close-up on mouth agape, tongue-twitching in shock shots in this show, I’m guessing the director has some kind of fetish for that sort of thing…
