The wife and I just finished Kakegurui tonight. Not bad. If you like the idea of watching that's very well aware of the fact that it's absolute trash, or something that "goes full anime", check it out. There's a lot of "OHMYGODWHATTHEFUUUUUCK" in it.

Finally finished King’s Game The Animation.

Some deaths were well deserved, especially Natsuko’s. Some were tragic like Ryou who was so far gone into lunacy he got the bloodiest death by chainsaw. Sadly Nobuaki is not the final survivor but at least got to reunite with Chiemi in heaven which must have a lax policy of who to let in if Natsuko was among them... :???:

Pokémon Sun and Moon ep. 1: Definitely can get into this generation more than X&Y. Each of the kids got their quirks like Pokémon-agoraphobic Lillie to rebel loner Kiawe.

Kill la Kill ep. 1: Boy, have I been missing out! The animation is freakishly all over the place and the characters are really wacky. Satsuki-sama has that Nazi bitch personality down to a T while Ryuko's new Goku uniform manages to be skimpy but in a somewhat respectable manner. :w00t:

Gave 3D Kanojo / Real Girl a look-in but quickly felt bludgeoned by its bland premise and execution.
Dorky teenaged boy (he be one of those yucky otaku types, eww) enters relationship with an abrasive, pretty girl. Will he slowly get over his self-imposed insecurities and will she turn out to be a lot nicer and loving than she lets on? You’d have to be painfully ignorant to not already know the answers to those questions.

Hinamatsuri passed the Tines test. The humour of the show is nothing special, and not much has been done with the whole “He’s a mobster with a psychic, adolescent time-bomb under his care” premise as of yet; she cut down a few trees, defeated a building full of rival mobsters in a slap-stick fashion, and that’s about it.
Probably the most interesting thing about the show so far is the side-character Anzu; I haven’t seen many homeless characters in this medium outside of Tokyo Godfathers, and seeing the homeless life through her experiences is …new.

Picked up A place further than the universe from the back-log.
A group of girls plan to go to Antarctica for adventure/coming of age/healing the heart.
I actually thought this was going to be some sort of sci-fi fantasy where they actually aimed for the edge of the universe. Silly me.
Image
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one thrown-off by the “shut talking” gag.
The start of episode 4 contained a funny scene with Kimari’s mother chasing her with a blunt kitchen utensil; a childhood memory I imagine many of us can relate to.
Interested to see how this one goes, I can get behind Shirase and Kimari’s drive. Not a fan of Hinata’s loud, annoying genki-girl act however; she’s giving me unpleasant K-On! flashbacks.

Full Metal Panic IV. It was a trip to see the same old characters with their same old early-noughties character designs again. I could forgive the eye-bleedingly ugly CG car-chase and AS battle if they weren’t so boring.
Not digging this one so far. Maybe I might enjoy it better dubbed, my ears have been disappointed because they expect to hear Hillary Haag’s voice come out of Tessa’s mouth...

I'm halfway through Box of Goblins. Very intriguing, but also quite convoluted. The characters talk A LOT* and the show is full of references to Japanese culture and language like Mushishi and Bakemonogatari, it's not particularly easy to follow.
Overall it is definitely a series with lots of personality, I'd recommend it.

I've tried a few of the Spring series, but nothing has really grabbed me -- Neue These is the only one so far to get to episode 2. I have just about kept current with Toji no Miko, which is having to re-develop the threat after clearing all levels in the first cour. And from the backlog, I finished Battle Girls -- Time Paradox, which was generally inferior all around to the somewhat similar Koihime Musou.

Welcome to the small and select group of us who have watched this anime -- though we've just left the title Romanized as Mouryou no Hako when discussing it here before.

It was fansubbed (though it took over a year for the last episode to emerge), but never got an official release overseas (at least not in English), mainly because of how deeply Japanese it is. The first book of the series, Summer of the Ubume did get an English translation, but is now long out of print.

Now that the anime of "Piano no Mori" has passed the point at which the 2007 film ended, I feel the need to comment on the pair of them (taking into account that I have also read the entire manga).

First, I should point out, for the nostalgic who haven't noticed, that this new anime is from Gainax - remember them?; the 2007 film was from Madhouse. The manga and film have had no official English release, but the anime has been taken up by Netflix for Q3. The anime will consist of 24 episodes (some sources say 12, but that's from an early press release that's been superseded), and will clearly encompass the whole manga of 26 volumes. A volume per episode? - seems really fast, but I reckon it will be fine, as the manga is, especially in the later parts, very expansively written - you could even say that the visual equivalent of purple prose abounds! But that's fine, as it all works in context if you've got drawn in enough to reach that point. If you're really not into classical (romantic) music, you might find a whole volume (eight chapters) describing the performance of a single piece (Chopin's first piano concerto) a bit much - or you might think you would, but the way the pianist's thoughts are described, with generous flashbacks as well, makes it seem perfectly natural. But that's still to come in this anime, of course.

Like so many anime films, the 2007 Piano no Mori covers only the first arc (5 volumes), not least because that's all that had been written at that point! They took that much and made it into a convincing film in its own right, which doesn't feel unfinished though it could happily take a sequel. Its design and animation are lovely; the character designs are that bit sharpened up from the manga originals (it's the mangaka's first work, and the early volumes are quite ropey in places), and the sequences of piano playing are beautifully done - presumably rotoscoped, from the accuracy of the movement, but not so that it intrudes.

The new anime is different in a number of respects. Firstly, it has the whole manga to refer to, so it can start with a flash-forward to near the end of the story (which has greatly puzzled some viewers, I note!); the OP animation includes many figures from the last part of the manga, thus confirming that the whole work is being adapted. Secondly, it has included a number of minor scenes and incidents, especially those relating to the gangster-run red-light district where the protagonist (Kai Ichinose) was born and is growing up, which will be seen to be essential background detail in future parts of the story; the film could omit them as irrelevant, as they were unimportant within its limited scope. The anime designs are closer to those of the manga, and while that can't be complained about, I guess it's to their detriment - but that'll be fine later, as the manga's designs improved in leaps and bounds, so being close to them as the characters grow up will become a virtue. The animation of the piano playing is my biggest disappointment; when the fingers-on-the-keyboard action is rotoscoped, the arms and even whole body of the player take on an unfortunate "uncanny valley" appearance, which the film avoided for the most part. When they cut between that CGI and 2D animated views of the player's face in the same scene, it's a bit jarring. And when there is no view of the keyboard, just the player across the piano, they make no effort to make the players' movements match the actions necessary to play the music being heard, which again the film generally did.

I have little to say here about the story, as I know it already. It's being transcribed faithfully. Much of the work is about the nature of musical performance (feeling vs accuracy, in short), and even more is about the judging of competitions, how to compare fundamentally different types of performance, and so on. Also the influence, at the highest levels, of politics and bribery (aka sponsorship!).

I won't say watch this, because it is clearly of somewhat esoteric interest, and the execution is not at the level that you'd want to watch regardless of that. However, it is good enough to put the story across; and if the animation improves with practice, it could easily become actually good. Meanwhile, I, at least, am happy to be watching it. But that's me.

At present: 6.5/10 - but now we are leaving the shadow of the film, there is scope for this to rise.

I've took some time to watch some Anime! I think my burn-out might be recovered enough to not be bothered by everything any longer?

I'm 6 Episodes deep into Megalobox. What brought me back in the first place was the amazing, and I really mean it, breathtaking sense of style. I can't remember a show from the top of the had, that was just my aesthetic! Apparently they've deliberately rendered out the show in lower resolution to give it even more of an "early-2000s bargain-bin flair". For me it works amazingly. Visual story-telling remains above average and even the animation hasn't taken too much of a nose-dive. Also, the MC is hot AS FUCK. Now I finally get how so many Otaku manage to trudge through trash-fests - sex really does sell. Kinda sad that Anime so rarely caters to my wishes in that regard, lol.
Despite bitchin' about the basic ass plot I was taken away by the surprisingly potent depiction of PTST in Episodes 5&6. I was amazed at how gripping the script has become, here's hope that that stays that way. Even if the framework is basic as they come, if they manage to sprinkle in interesting little human stories I'll happily keep watching.

Lupin III Part 5 pulled a fast one on me! I wondered how they'd keep up this tempo for the rest of the show. Turns out, it'll be an anthology show after all. The first "arc" was amazing and everything I wanted Lupin to be. Great writing, fun characters. The writers understood technology very well.
The second "arc" was refreshingly goofy, harkening back to older shows, I guess. Super fun, also amazing looking style-choice!
We are in the beginning stages of the third arc, and it shapes up to be a nice mystery. I'm looking forward to more. Colours are more muted and moody this time.
I really love this approach, and also the willingness to play with the style. While sadly the quality of animation never reaches the stratospheric heights of Part 4, the much more "modern" story telling more than makes up for it.

Hinamatsuri was the surprise of the season for me. It's nothing special, but the execution is just perfect. Not only is every joke timed perfectly, they also don't overstay their welcome!

Next up will be Hisone to Maso-tan. The premise seems like glorification of the army as an institution, laden with lolis. Stuff like that appalls me on a deep level. But the execution seems juicy enough to mask the disgusting after-taste. I will report back.

Hinamatsuri - I said Anzu is the most interesting character largely due to her homelessness, so of course she would find a home in the latest episode. Typical.
At least it was a good episode with some well delivered, heartfelt emotion.
My short-sighted vision only mildy ruined the feels, as it looked to me like Anzu had suddenly grown a moustache after a certain, painful moment of acceptance:

Ninja Batman
This was super fun, the English dub is actually pretty swell! Not only the script made me giggle a lot, but also the visual inventiveness! There's so many fun visual ideas big and small, it's a blast to watch. This is goofy fun executed perfectly. I mean, it's basically dozens of fun ideas strung together by a competent script and amazing execution. And although it's in CG, it really looks phenomenal. Back when the first full CG shows started to appear, I predicted that 2020 will be the year the Anime industry will produce a CG show that's not searing my eyes out. We still have two years, but Ninja Batman is a great leap into the right direction. I still prefer high-quality 2D animation, but Ninja Batman already looks better than many shows airing right now.
Speaking of high-quality 2D animation, pretty much in the middle of the movie the styles starts to shift, transitioning over something I'd describe similar to Ukiyo-e into a phenomenal full-fledged 2D segment. It looks like Masami Yuasa's rendition of Ping Pong and Isao Takahata's (RIP) Kaguya had a baby. For me it came out of nowhere and I couldn't help but watching what stunning artistry unfolded before my eyes.
SPOILER: Show
is it a meta commentary that they employ 2D animation for the time joker is NOT crazy? lol

The only thing I didn't like was the flaccid and unremarkable OST.
Also, theres the problem that American superheroes are inherently hyper-individualistic vigilante power fantasy bullshit without nuance or intrigue whatsoever.

But oh well, if the amazing Jojo OPs were proof of concepts, this successful melange called Ninja Batman tells me, there is a bright future in store for CG-animation.

I thought it was okish after deciding to treat this as a silly "what-if". And to be honest, I only watched it because BATMAN. If they replaced the cast with original characters, I would have no interest in watching this.

One part I liked was the whole Joker vegatable twist, that was pretty cool.

Regarding this season's anime lineup, I think Megalobox takes the crown so far. I feel this show could be something I'll actually bother to rewatch in the future and the OP is so goddamn addicting (IMO better than OPM).

Genesis Climber Mospeada episode 1

Decided to finally check it out after getting so damn tired of trying to get through Southern Cross' Robotech version without much luck since it's THAT bad and given the impression I have on that, I don't think I would like to get through the original version of that show either.

I would also like to make the point for Mospeada that when an elder authority figure says that they learned from their mistakes of a prior war, in anime cliches that is a huge red flag for a new invading party against a superior alien race! And because i didn't watch Robotech's version of Mospeada beforehand, i thought that Stig's blue Valkyrie lookalike was his means of transportation rather than the titular Mospeada which is a bike that can convert to human size mecha with the scope that makes it look that much more bad ass. ^_^

Now we're getting to the good shit.

Hisone to Masotan
Wow. It's been quite some time I've seen a show so high-quality, I don't care that it's premise actively repulses me, lol. Joking aside, I was never fond of shows that portray the military as this cozy place where everyone knows everyone and it's like a cute little family. But this show tells its story so well I couldn't care less. I want that every show is made with this high level of care and attention to detail and competence in craft.

Mr. Arashi's Amazig Freak Show // Shoujo Tsubaki // Midori
Now, this is a super obscure Anime, where the meta of its making is crucial to fully appreciate the awesomeness on display.
Brace for some artsy shit.
In 1991 one guy (Hiroshi Harada) decided he wanted to adapt the art of underground artist Suehiro Maruo into animation. Because of the ero guro content, he was being rejected by many animation studios, so he decided to make it himself, spending all of his savings in the process. He decided to only show this as part of a circus-like exhibition. There was no home video release. Once, the only existing copy was shown outside of Japan, but when it got sent back, a part of the movie was destroyed by authorities after they deemed it to be too edgy.
C E N C O R S H I P
As mentioned, Harada almost created this film on his own, a notable objection being the music, which is by J.A. Saezer, who is probably best known for his the mind-blowing work on Utena.
Now, the movie itself features very little animation, similar to Belladonna of Sadness (another artsy classic), but it's executed so beautifully, I was transfixed on the screen, once it started.
High recommendation, I pray there'll be a home video rerelease somewhere down the road.
Fuck it, 10/10

I've just finished Fate/Zero. It has beautifully showcased Urobuchi's talents as an honest writer, who peers into the depths of human nature. The ending especially, took various characters to their logical conclusions (much like Madoka: Rebellion), in a way that makes you go "Oh, well... you're right, you're right, that is indeed what s/he would do here. Can't argue with that."

End of F/Z, consequently very spoilerrific  SPOILER: Show
I have various questions about the world, and the way in which the Grail operates. These are, however, not faults of the show itself, but rather a sign I was sufficiently invested in the show to want to know more about it.

Irisviel is a wonderful example of the Rei expy, being that she embodies the Divine Womb of the Grail, which wishes to be born into this world. She also has this:

Image

After watching, I came to the conclusion that the wine which overflows from the Grail, and covers the world at the time of (Third Impact) the final awakening of the Grail, is meant to represent blood. It is the blood of the seven Servants, who were sacrificed to bring about the end of the War. The servants are kept alive through the mana of their Masters. Mana is life. It is also semen, the seed of which life is born. The Grail is an obviously feminine symbol: Not only is it a cup, a receiver and holder of fluid, it is also (in this show much as in Dan Brown's conception) quite literally embodied as a woman. It is also explicitly stated to want to 'be born', as though it were a fetus itching to leave the womb. It is both the womb, and in another aspect, the fetus within it.

In sum: "The grail war is basically a bunch of sperm fighting through the vaginal canal to fertilise the egg."

The ending particularly, again, evoked EoE to me quite strongly. And if I may say so, I believe it did a better job at what EoE tried to accomplish, than EoE did

More spoilers on interesting things within the show  SPOILER: Show
Fem!Arthur has the sword Excalibur.
Fem!Arthur has been summoned by a mage, who has left fem!Arthur mostly in the companion of his wife.
He entrusted to his wife fem!Arthur's sacred sheath, Avalon.

Image

Considering how much time the two spend together, and how much fun they have with each other, I am entirely happy interpreting it as sexual symbolism (sword = penis, sheath quite literally = vagina).

Image

And Gilgamesh himself is everything I expected; a true King of Heroes. The first of the heroic spirits, and with a manner/personality befitting such. I look forward to seeing his further characterization. (I first really wanted to watch the show after reading this short Gilgamesh fic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/14007546/chapters/32256927. warning: Explicit)

In addition, Urobuchi uses brutal choking scenes to powerful effect. That made me think of Eva as well, of course, for obvious reasons. The man is a veritable treasure.

10/10, and if you have any appreciation for such works, I urge you to take a look at it.
My first fanfic: Neon Genesis Craig-Insertion
Kyoko's Melons: Currently being completely rewritten, so... if anyone liked it so far, great. I did too. But... not enough. ;)

Triage X episode 3

The beginning of the female arsonist arc had it very obvious from the get go that exchange student Chikage was the rogue criminal at large and her lesbian undertones with bike fetish co lead Mikoto are typical of the type of big boobies that are usually designed by Shoji Satoh of Highschool of the Dead fame.

Piano no Mori, episode 8

They're clearly going for an extended treatment of the main part of the manga (covering the Chopin Piano Competition). I had already thought this to some extent because they have been going a little faster than necessary so far - but this week they've skipped a whole volume! They've left out the entire episode of Kai getting a girlfriend. OK, she doesn't play a big part in the rest of the manga, but she's a solid background character, and has a highly significant interaction with Kai's teacher - I don't know how they'll play that scene (maybe using his mum instead). And they can't just bring the girlfriend in later (at least, not as written in the manga) because that story is integrated with a character whose part has explicitly ended.

Also, so far the anime has used the exact music mentioned in the manga (unlike the earlier film, which chose different Mozart Sonatas, for instance); but today they used Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto, rather than the 3rd which is in the manga - but the comparative recognition factor probably justifies that!

The animation of Kai's playing hands seemed better this week, but perhaps I'm simply getting more used to it. OTOH, there was a scene in which his head bobbed around in a manner that made me think of a video game...

Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (Ufotable series)

Episode 10 (Fate/Zero spoilers in addition to UBW)  SPOILER: Show
The Grail War is getting highly interesting. Between Archer and the mysteries of his past (and motives for seeking an alliance with Caster), Shirou and his affinity for Archer's blades (plus those odd dreams he has where the blades are coming from his arms), and most especially, Gilgamesh, I am very much looking forward to continuing this show.

Gilgamesh raised an interesting point this episode, about superfluity. In life, he collected 10 slaves, intending to find among them one whom no one would miss, whom he might then kill. But of those 10, all were necessary for manual labor in that old world. Nowadays, however, he could (as he says) gather hundreds, or even thousands of people, and not find among them any individual who was necessary. He loves extensive decoration, he says, but only abundance for a purpose. He sees no need for waste.

I'm not sure what sort of actions/plans that will translate into, but I very much look forward to seeing them. Gilgamesh is arguably one of Fate's better characters, and I really do want to see more of him. (Should probably read the Epic too, eh?)

On Illyasviel: Haven't seen her too much since the big Berserker fight, but she's still so adorable. I remember her from F/Z, and she was so cute there... She still is, even if she kinda wants to kill Shirou-kun as revenge against Kiritsugu. I don't know how much she remembers of the ending of F/Z, nor do I know who those women are who appear to be taking care of her/serving her. She probably thinks that Kiritsugu caused Irisviel's death, somehow... whether she knows the truth I do not know. I also wonder how Saber feels about this, as she would remember Illya-chan as a child.

Kyoko's Melons: Currently being completely rewritten, so... if anyone liked it so far, great. I did too. But... not enough. ;)

I had no idea there was a Batman anime.

Uruhara -- cute girls fighting cute alien invasions in a somewhat psychedelic version of Tokyo's Harajuku district, with a side of the usual crippling social anxiety about (not) having friends. Entirely fluff, but harmless; had it been played as serious drama without the cute, it would have been way too over-wrought, but as it is, it works quite nicely as a diversion. It's not as pretty in real life as it is in the anime, alas.

Technically, Batman: Gotham Knight could count as an anime which was made a decade prior taking place in the Nolanverse after Begins but before The Dark Knight.
