I actually loved The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru the first (and only) time I saw it. I was just amazed at how funny it was, and I knew that what followed would not disappoint. Turned out to be my favorite episode. ^_^

It's surprising what a difference a decade can make when revisiting older shows.

Continuing with the Haruhi experiment, I found that I had to skip a chunk of episode 3 (had this been a 2016 series, being watched for the first time, it would have landed with an audible "splat!" when I dropped it about 1/3 the way in), and that episode 4 (The Boredom...) was pretty boring due to having already seen what was being alluded to in the callbacks to the as yet unseen but internally-chronologically earlier events, and the rest of it failing as comedy. Eight years being a long time on the internet, the most amusing thing so far has been the contrast between Kyon's struggle with the club web-site and the frictionless upgrades of the Brave Clab's.

By contrast, this time around with Lucky Star, what I found bland and somewhat tedious (or even grating in the case of Lucky Channel) in 2007 is just being pleasant fluff. I had forgotten to quite what extent "all they do is talk about food" characterised the first episode, but at three episodes in, it remains the most successful pure CGDCT series for me (usually getting to the first mid-episode commercial break is a struggle). "I buy sausage" is still a musical car crash, though.

Which order are you watching Haruhi? TV, DVD, or chronological?

I was never all that fond of either Haruhi Suzumiya or Lucky Star. The problem I have with these shows isn't that they're boring, but how poorly they've aged. They're both shows that came from studios trying to make what they think anime fans want to see, based on the stereotypes of the time. It doesn't matter what demographic you're aiming at when you do this, it never ends well. The only thing that changes is the cliches that you use. So instead of a hot-blooded shonen hero who wants to be The Very Best, we've got a bunch of high school students who sit around talking about the most random things.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

^Don’t know about that, might be more a case of the John Carter effect- their influences have been so strong and everything else has copied them to such an extent that over the years the originals don’t seem so special anymore. <shrug>

Started Princess Tutu. Given that this is a toon following the adventures of a transforming, Ballerina Duck recommended by Mr.Tines, I should probably be ashamed of myself for not guessing this was a magical-girl show.
Watched a handful of episodes in dub, but everybody except Luci Christian’s voice sounds too quiet to me, this is especially true of Jay Hickman’s hilarious monotone performance as Mytho/Myuto.
The OP makes me feel depressed, like it’s preparing me for some kind of tragedy…
That teacher Cat is an odd one, but he makes me laugh.

Saw ep.10 of Recovery of an MMO Junkie/ Recommendation of the Wonderful Virtual Life (What is up with that name change? I’m getting Cat Planet Cuties flashbacks); which would appear to be the final episode.
I suppose one could consider it a modern take on the whole star-crossed lovers shtick; two players of an MMO hit it off and end up meeting IRL despite all unlikelihood.
It could have explored gender roles/perceptions/politics a bit, it could have explored Mori’s mindset better, given us a little more on what caused her to quit her job and why she lacks self-confidence way she does; but no, the show didn't feel like getting into anything interesting like that.
It was an okay, vanilla romance and not much else.

YuYuYu S2 episode 3 -- in which Yuuna actually remembers the Hero Club tenets, and then proceeds to ruin everyone's Christmas. I should have suspected that
SPOILER: Show
Truck-kun was actually a Vertex
all along.

Interesting in that this was really the first time in any of the YuYuYu part of the franchise that we've actually been privy to any of the title character's introspection.

@pwhodges
Broadcast order, the exact same [a.f.k.] subs as I watched in 2006; it's just that I do remember the highlights after all these years, and that spoils the mysteries.

@chazthesilencer
But this one is a magical girl show for little girls.

If you want more something a bit more silly and light hearted I totally recommend Mahou Tsukai Tai!/Magic User's Club after Princess Tutu more of a gag anime with most of the same team. Well, I started watching Transformers: Super-God Masterforce and it sure is a show. This is the first Transformers anime with no connection whatsoever to the cartoon or existing characters and it seems like they didn't know what to do with it. The Transformers are people called "Pretenders" who at step one put on a Saint Seiya style armor and fight for a little and then at Step 2 jump into the middle of a Transformer to become the big robots. Kind of like the way GaoGaiGar combines smaller robots into bigger robots. Unfortunately, the art style has really changed into something more like an old Tatsunoko show and while I don't have a problem with Gatchaman or anything the robots just look like people in suits a lot. Also, part of what has made me love Transformers so much are the robots are characters! You can't just stick Optimus/Convoy in front of me and call him Ginrai because there's a person in him! The Transformers after this is called Victory though and seems to be a beloved favorite in Japan so just going to try to get to the end here.

It's been quite some time, since I've seen Haruhi, but I feel like you're both right at that front. I enjoyed it enough when I first watched it, but it might be one of those shows which are so deeply rooted in the time were produced, they don't quite work as anything else but time capsules.

Hmm... I only saw it myself ~6 months ago... but, then again, I hadn't watched too many newer anime (that is, post-2000's), so I didn't subconsciously compare it to its imitators.

Now that I think about it, I hadn't seen shows like Madoka when I first watched Eva (not long before that)... this explains a lot, actually. A few of the people I've recommended Eva to didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought they would. I guess they were a bit jaded, having seen things like Madoka, and other very dark shows? Well, I'm glad it turned out the way it did for me.

The thing is, other shows were actually doing the "high school sitcom anime" thing earlier--and, in my opinion, better. Probably the first of them, the one that started the whole thing, was Azumanga Daioh! in 2002. That show has held up extremely well today, because was able to be its own thing without relying on constant references to other anime. The comedy in it is actually funny, and derives from the characters acting more or less like, well, like people. Even the surreal aspects, like Chiyo's father who may or may not be a floating orange cat, are done in surprisingly subtle manner.

You can tell that this is what all the other high school anime were trying to do--it's just that they never did a very good job. What this results in is shows with a highly "in-your-face" style, characters talking in ridiculous slang that nobody ever used, plots that are absurd for the sake of it, and characters who are blatant otaku stand-ins. I suppose it might have been enjoyable when those shows first came out, but looking back on it it's very grating.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

YuYuYu S2 episode 4 -- in which they make up for the general lack of yuri teasing in the first half of the series, including confirmation of the fan speculation that Tougou is to Yuuna as Tomoyo to Sakura ("You're gonna get taped"). Also to thicken the plot, some of what happened in S1 episode 12 that we didn't get shown, because at the time it would have been pointless at best, or a terrible cliffhanger at worst, is now revealed.

I just wonder how much I can trust the subtitles for the next episode preview, because at least one line seemed to feed right into the second VN territory. And with only two episodes to go, it's not yet obvious what it is that YuYu is going to have to punch to make everything daijoubu.

I watched Lucky Star last year and Haruhi this year, and I thought they were both pretty good for what they were. Haruhi is a bit overrated I think, but I don't think I would feel any different about it if I'd watched it for the first time at any other time(I haven't watched the film yet). If anything I'd say Lucky Star is a bit underrated in that you don't really hear about it anymore, but then again I only really talk to you guys about animmay. Akira(that girl at the end with the long sleeves) is probably one of my favorite anime antagonists.

I'm actually watching a series right now that reminds me a lot of Lucky Star, Non Non Biyori , except the main character isn't an otaku and it takes place in the country. It's pretty funny though, with a lot of low key humor and there are some serious moments here and there too. It's pretty good.

I'm also finishing up the sixth Natsume Yujin Cho series, which has been(the entire anime run) the definition of hit or miss for me. I've been watching it through the year, a series every couple months, which began when I wanted to watch something like the wonderful Mushi Shi. Basically I really like the standalone episodes, enjoy enough episodes that deal with Takashi's life, and pretty much dislike the episodes with the exorcists or that actor guy(though I like his familiars). Watching the relationship between Takashi and sensei develop is nice and probably the reason I've stuck with the series. I feel like once I finish this season up though I won't be missing it all that much.

Re: shows that are airing now. Kino's been pretty funny in that its best episodes are just remade episodes from the first series. What went through the minds of the creators in that they thought that these episodes needed to be made again?! Do they just hate the first series? I don't really mind it because I'm really positive about anime, but it just seems like such a waste.

I've actually kind of dug the last few episodes of Juni Taisen, though I kind of wish they didn't let us know who was going to win the thing like halfway through. I liked Tiger and Ox even if the show didn't have the best character development and I was pretty alright with how their character arcs played out since I was never really expecting too much from this series. Battle royale series are cool but I don't think they'll ever live up to Battle Royale, which is the Battle Royale of the battle royale genre.

March Comes in Like a Lion and Love Live!! Sunshine have both been simply joys to watch, and everything I could want from anime.

Since it's the end of the year I'll also say my favorite series of the year was Rakugo 2, followed by March Comes in Like a Lion and then probably Sakura Quest. Looking forward to DARLING IN THE FRANXX in 2018.
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.

I was so disappointed by the first few episodes that I dropped it. I sorta feel I ought to watch some more as a matter of form, but haven't yet managed to drive myself to it.

However, I continue to find The Ancient Magus' Bride to be entrancing.

Inuyashiki ep 10

Image

God damn this show is making me tear up. ;_;

I mean yes, the scene with his daughter went on for too long, it's incredible no one has found out who he is after all this time, and holy crap,
SPOILER: Show
9/11 x50 is a bit much (two or three planes would have killed a 1,000 people),
but dammit man, the feels.

Explorations like this is why I watch anime. Utilizing hero, shounen, or any over-top tropes you like to tell a human story, as they work to make the abstract parts of the human experience visceral. Something animation does better, or just more easily, I think, than any other storytelling medium.

I also watch because robot-electro-mechanical aesthetic-as-power-fantasy, recursive learning fantasy, and thin slice analysis of Japanese socio-cultural dynamics produced by American defeat & occupation and its implications for nation-building tactics.

I recently finished watching Gundam Wing. It had been over fifteen years since the last time I watched the TV series on Toonami and liking it (for the record, I did own the Endless Waltz OVA for a few years before I donated it to a local library), and with the show coming out on Bluray along with a manga adaptation of the story being released, I thought it a good idea to give it a proper rewatch. Over the years, and along with watching several Gundam series, primarily UC shows, I have often read online about how terrible the show is compared to the above mentioned shows, often lumping it with other realtively, at least in the West, unpopular shows such as Seed/Seed Destiny, AGE, and to a lesser extant, OO. After watching it, my conclusion is that while it is not as good as my sense of nostalgia is telling me it was, but it is at the same time, much better than a lot of people give it credit for.

The story takes a few leaps in logic at various points, but the story is very consistant with some degree of complexity. I also felt that I was getting a lot more story in an episode than in some other Gundam shows. I found the characters quite memorable, even if I don't remember what they said. I think one of the factors that may have contributed to the shows negative image was the English voice acting, as the dub was how most of us first experienced it. It had been years since I first heard it, but it seemed that Heero's English voice turned him into the Terminator without the German accent. In the case of Relena, who has quite a negative reaction (I remember reading one comment describing her as "damaged goods"), her voice in English sounded very stern and unforgiving. It didn't help that she was often animated that way (the ED is the best example I can think of). Another common complaint is that the animation is terrible, and on this point, I have to agree with them. It appears so cheap and slapdash in places, though I noticed that it did improve in the final episodes. Even it's successor series, Gundam X, had better animation throughout it's run, and that was the one that was cancelled.

But I think the greatest complaint about the show that people had was about the direction. It often feels like a cheap TV melodrama, with overly dramtic scenes and poses. A prime example of that is a sceene where Wufei, who was in a bit of a funk, talking with someone, and he ends up walking onto a boat and floating down the river, while still standing and having his arms crossed. It was supoosed to be serious, but I couldn't help but laugh. This doesn't mean that the there weren't good scenes done that way. There was a scene where Noin with the scabboard of her dress saber, was using it to tap against the scabboard belonging to Zechs. It summed up their backstory and relationship without needing an exposition dump, which I liked. Wing was the first Gundam show, to my knowledge, that had a sizable female fanbase, I'm wondering if the style of the show had anything to do with it.

So do I like the show? Yes. Do I like it enough to buy the Blurays or the manga? I don't know, how cheap can I get it at Rightstuf? Plus, there are also other Gundam shows that I want to watch and/ or buy first. Thank you all for letting present and in depth review and probably failing at it.

I just finished Fruits Basket... It was honestly an amazing show. 9/10.

SPOILER: Show
It so perfectly treats the trauma of having lost one's mother... Both Tohru, and later, Kyo, are so perfectly written. Really. I know there are some unresolved plot points, but that doesn't make me enjoy it any less.
In that way, it's not dissimilar to EoTV. While EoTV doesn't address in the slightest the arrival of the MPEs, or anything that EoE covers, it doesn't matter. Because it addresses the most fundamental issue: "You need to live with others. You can't be alone. You simply cannot run away. You need a line in the blank space to put your feet on."

Fruits Basket's ending is much the same. Sure, you never meet the rest of the zodiac, nor do you find out what happens afterwards with Akito. But the way Tohru becomes who she is, how she reaches apotheosis, is beautiful. I cried the last two episodes.

And Akito is quite the Shinji. Because he knows he's going to die, and he's always sick, he attempts to gain some control. His meeting Tohru was the perfect way to follow the end of Kyo's arc. Because he's just like him. He too is cursed, and feels hated by all. And he truly believes that everyone just wants him to die, even though it's not necessarily the case. And he can't let Tohru get close to the Sohma's. Perhaps because he worries that they'll rely on her rather than on him? He needs to feel needed. And yet, he also exercises dominance over them, because he needs to keep them close to himself. He can't bear to be alone, no matter what he says.

But Tohru understands. She understands everyone. She understands Kyo, and Akito, perfectly. And she knows exactly what to say to them. To me, that's what Kaworu was in NGE, and that's why I love him.

And Tohru herself develops into a warm, nurturing, motherly person. After her mother's death, she is finally able to internalize her mother, so to speak. That is, she takes over the role of motherliness.

In sum, this show affected me deeply. Almost certainly more so, because my own mother died recently. But, I expect it shall always remain in my heart. I think I will forever have fond memories of Fruits Basket.

I don't regret having met any of you

- Honda Tohru

Next up: Probably Utena. Though I may watch something else concurrently, as I could use something more comedic. Still undecided. ^_^
My first fanfic: Neon Genesis Craig-Insertion
Kyoko's Melons: Currently being completely rewritten, so... if anyone liked it so far, great. I did too. But... not enough. ;)

I'd say take your time on watching it, and maybe don't watch it at all. I probably wouldn't have said that before the 12th episode but it was soooo bad it killed any positivity I had about this adaption. The stupidity of it was almost unbelievable. It made Juni Taisen look like Moby-Dick or something.
SPOILER: Show
Killer sheep? And she runs them over in a SUV? And the reasoning behind them being in now way clever or interesting or anything.

Man, screw that series.

It did give me a pretty big appreciation of the folks who worked on the second Mushishi series though, since there was a pretty big gap between the two series yet they're both phenomenal. The second series is probably even better than the first.

Yea, I rewatched it in June(used to watch it on Toonami too[4:30pm, after DBZ]) and I thought it was definitely decent. I really liked the mobile suit designs, and I like Heero, Duo and Relena as characters. The story wasn't the greatest, but I thought it had its moments. I do really like Endless Waltz. Wouldn't buy either on blu ray though I wouldn't mind those enamel pins you get with the special edition

Anyways, I watched Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi for the first time this last week, and I was really impressed with. It kept me going from the beginning, the two MCs were great, and the final episode was very well done. I'd say I like it more than FLCL or Panty and Stocking. What's the general consensus with the other Evageeks out there?

Also watched Kanon(2006), which was a pleasant surprise. Pretty nice collection of girl characters, and I didn't mind that they all liked the MC since he was a nice dude. Really liked that the series took place in that cold town and I liked that the show was kind of dark and morbid but also cheerful and uplifting. For sure a first rate anime. Liked it more than a couple of it's brother annimays, Clannad and Little Busters.

Watched The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, too. It was really long... but it was really good. I like when creators make animes that take full advantage of all of the characters available, and I feel like this one did a really good job of that.
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!
