@TMBounty_Hunter: Why's that? I'm pretty interested in seeing how this new series turns out, and having him back on board, as well as Sadamato, bodes well, IMO.

View Original PostStillborn wrote:I see no point in that. FLCL was pretty much a mess of allegories and metaphores. I don't think we need another one of those since it would be annoying repetition.

In other words, you didn't like the original and don't want more. For those of us that enjoyed the mess of allegories and metaphors, I don't think we'd mind seeing more as long as it is done well.

From the feel of this original announcement it seems that this will be done in Production IG's house, which was not the case for the original.

The actual creative staff, the cheif director, episode directors, storyboard artist, animation directors and key animators were from Gainax but now are at either Trigger or Khara.

The announced director, Katsuyuki Motohiro has only one notable thing out of two total on his resume.
The announced writer is barely googleable.
Tsurumaki being a mere "supervisor" is not encouraging.
Sadamoto involvement is only barely relevant since whatever design he'll do will always be at the mercy of Production IG's animation directors who determine the final look.

This project is looking like it's a bunch of producers digging something up to milk instead of the the people actually responsible for the work wanting to continue it.

EDIT:

Mildly encouraging but still keeping expectations low until full animation staff announced.

Adult Swim is partnering with Production I.G. to produce 12 new episodes of FLCL, which will be split into two seasons. No other information is available at this time. I'm not particularly excited, but at the same time I'm not not excited. The original FLCL felt just right: that odd, sometimes almost soporific flavor of storytelling with just a pinch of Gainax flavor to put it all together. It had a rather open ending, so I don't feel like the show has to stand alone as it is, but it also didn't leave me feeling like it needed a sequel. Knowing that there's actually going to be one now doesn't excite me, but it certainly intrigues me. I'll be keeping an eye out for it, and I really hope that it's going to be good.

At the very least, I want The Pillows to be involved.

I'm interested to see A) how many of the old staff they get on board and B)how it expands the 'universe' of FLCL.

The hype will probably increase as more details emerge about the show. FLCL was a huge deal for people who grew up during those early runs on adult swim.

Probably will be an interesting curiosity. But, with so little of the actual original creative team involved it probably won't share too much of a similarity with the original.
As long as the new creative team has an original vision & pursues it down a fresh path there's potential for this.
If the team just attempts a retread of FLCL only with flashier computer graphics it will fail.

Fingers crossed for fresh.

Either way, the bright spot is if they bring back Haruko's voice actress I'll get to hear her squeaky vocals again. I like her sound.

P.S. What does the shell formerly known as Gainax still have the rights too? Gurren Lagann maybe?

Eva and FLCL have so far been the only two licenses that we know got away. Everything else is probably still there.
The really should sell Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt to Trigger though, that actually demands a sequel.

Not sure what you mean by that. I hadn't even watched anything of Anno until Diebuster was already available in the US for a few years, so I wasn't aware of the announcements and hype around Diebuster.

BTW, I really enjoyed Diebuster. Gunbuster still has more of that emotional and visual gravitas towards the end for me, but Diebuster seemed to have a more steady handle on its tone throughout.

I'm not excited about it and what ever interest I have left, depends on if we get continuation of Naota's life or if Haruko will just waste use and toss away someone else. In first case I may give it a go, since the developement may be something interesting, seeing as Naota's relationship with Haruko seems to parallel Amarao's when he was younger. We could yet see Naota unknowingly following Amarao's footsteps.

If it will be focused on new characters instead of the old ones, I'll skip it completly. I don't feel like investing into some new faces from the scratch if I don't have conclusion with the old ones.

After the information we had confirmed I'm super optimistic and excited, however the notion that they are only doing this to "sell out FLCL" is dumb. FLCL isn't some merch cash cow especially compared to Eva which can be very much a unnecessary cash cow at times, if they were doing this JUST to milk money thats a bad investment so I doubt that is the case. It looks to be a passion project pushed by the original creators and fans (i.e VP of adult swim, and production team) Production IG was on board for the original production so going like "Oh no Gainax is not there" is dumb because Gainax is a shell of its former self, the actual names will be what matters and keep in mind IG has a great relationship with Khara they did some Animator Expo shorts so whos to say we don't see some familiar names on the animation side come on over. The pieces are in place Kazuya, The Pillows, and hope. I imagine this is the same emotions people went though before rebuild came out which is completely understandable but its not worth putting these people on the cross, they deserve at the very least a chance.

I love Diebuster as well, it's one of my favourite Anime ever; and I like Gunbuster a lot too. Back when Diebuster got made, many old-time fans had gripes with Diebuster, because they felt like it betrayed the spirit of Gunbuster. (While in fact, Gainax couldn't have nailed the spirit of fanservice any better than they did with Diebuster). Yes, Gunbuster is more hard science fiction, than Diebuster - but Diebuster happens millenia later, so get over it, elderly Otaku, ^_^

Anyways, what I tried to convey was, that now I understand the feelings of sad Gunbuster Otaku better, because I'm rather salty by that FLCL announcement. There's just too much that could go wrong. FLCL caught a lightning in a bottle, and seemed almost like an accidental stroke of genius. Which of course is the intended effect. It's easy to get blown away by the sheer density of information presented in an abstract way. But once you learn to sort through it, you can appreciate the richness that lies behind it. There's times when three narratives go on at once, and it's all under disguise of an experimental cartoon. It's outstanding, really.
Which leads me into the next topic: FLCL was a play ground for animators. Every scene explodes in creativity and interesting ways to convey information, miraculously held together by tight directing and a great soundtrack. I don't know if it's possible to redo that.
Especially considering how complete the characterization and exploration of its themes is, I really don't know, if an expansion of that universe will do the message any good.

It's clear that Sadamoto and Tsurumaki are on board, but I guess in name only. Like Sadamoto's credited as "package designer" for the G.U. games, or, and that was what I was alluding to, Anno's credit as head director for Diebuster. Tsurumaki told us in an interview Anno's only contribution to Diebuster was the idea that the main girl should be a robot. Those names are used as branding devices, the same way Shinbo is used for every Shaft show in existence.

Of course, there's something to explore - namely how deep the wallet goes. And I don't blame them. I would do the same. The difference is, while Diebuster was created by the most talented disciple of Anno, and a team of great people that already crafted the brilliant FLCL, this time we have some names behind the production, whose track record is kinda meager.

I'm normally not such a negative nancy, when reboots happen, mostly I don't care enough. But there rarely has been a story as expertly crafted, and more importantly, complete in narrative than FLCL. It said everything it could and should, and I'm afraid that a seuqel might take away from Haruko's magic.

But, now it's happening - let's hope for the best.

EDIT: Tried to make it more readable.
EDIT2: Just listening to the ANN podcast, and both of them not only have the same opinion of this remake as me, but also use same words to describe their feelings.
Kinda creepy.

The Pillows are half of what made FLCL, FLCL. They damn well better be involved. It just isn't FLCL without their music.

Holy shit this is actually happening! They had better not screw this up! I demand higher standards then just rebuild of flcl!

I mean the rebuilds were alright but they really could have been a lot better. So here's hoping that this will be a sequal done as good or at least near as good as the first one.

Pillows confirmation!!! Whatever worry I had 30 minutes ago is being drowned out currently by overwhelming joy and glee.

This doesn't really confirm that they are actually involved. This tweet makes it sound like they are trying to get them involved. Doesn't mean they necessarily will be though.

And to be honest, even if they do get them involved, I think their music is just gonna end up being disappointing because I haven't exactly been digging anything recently that they've done.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they got a newer band on the soundtrack. As far as Japanese bands go, I would love to see one like Stagnation appear in a FLCL reboot.
