From what I remember about the series, the thing that bugged me personally about the ending was

TTGL ending  SPOILER: Show
Hobo Simon, because I felt it implied he wasn't keeping in touch with his comrades. At least the film's variation of the ending showed him honoring Nia's memory.

SPOILER: Show
Yoko too, for that matter. Even when she was assisting in the final battle, she was ultra secretive about being a teacher and her life in general. I just never understood why she was so insistent on basically alienating herself from every one and everything associated with Team Dai Gurren.
My earliest childhood memory was getting mugged by Death.

Years later, I started writing this.

As far as I can tell, there is no correlation between the two.

^Both of those also bugged me a fair bit.

SPOILER: Show
I guess Yoko wasn't really hiding her identity since she gets all dressed up down to take out the two Gunmen that attack the island her school is on, but I did think that it was odd that she just left Team Dai-Gurren without a word.

Nia's death came out of nowhere at me, too.

I also really didn't understand the rationale behind Hobo!Simon, since Simon doesn't really have anything to gain by becoming a wandering traveler...I felt it was just added to give the ending that extra oomph and give some meaning to him giving Gurren Lagann to the kids.

What else was he going to do? It's already been established that he's not all that good at ruling the planet, and in fact he pretty much knows how to drill shit and that's it. Who needs him to drill shit now that people don't live in holes anymore?

Watched Episodes 1 and 2 of FLCL. It's gloriously nonsensical. I haven't got a clue what's going on. And I love it.

Also, Haruko's guitar impact noise is the coolest sound effect ever. If I could make a noise of my choice when I orgasmed, it would be BRRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNGGGGGGG

Hopefully on the way to college tomorrow I'll get hit by Haruko on her Vespa.

Starting CLANNAD.

Bring the pain, motherfuckers.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

To this day I listen to FLCL ost. :)
And I suddenly feel like listening to Little Busters again.

View Original PostMike Mars wrote:Okay, I just finished watching Gurren Lagann last night, and I have never seen an anime that has pissed me off as much as that one has. I thought the entire show was great, up until the last three minutes of the final episode.

SPOILER: Show
I don't have a problem with bittersweet endings, or even downright depressing ones for that matter. What I have a problem with though, is that Gurren Lagann presented it as a 'happy' ending, only to just kill off Nia out of nowhere at the very tail end for no reason other than to just damper the mood. Her death was just so transparently obvious that the only purpose it served was to make the viewer feel sad.

That's what really pissed me off about this. It's story writing 101. If you're going to manipulate the audience into feeling a certain emotion, you have to at least be subtle about it. If you don't, then it's not really going to invoke any emotion from the viewer other than frustration and anger. Not only that, but it feels almost disrespectful to the viewer. That entire ending was basically the writer saying "Hey, here's your happy ending. Nah, just kidding. Fuck you.".

It's not clever, it's not deep, and it's not thought provoking. It's just contrived.

I actually kinda liked the ending.... and I seem to be the minority.

SPOILER: Show
In my head canon, that intro sequence of two minutes in the first episode is what would happen if Simon never lost his drive. I.e - he's exploding the galaxy and thinking of everyone as enemy - spiral power keeps spinning and he's pretty much the most powerful spiral warrior. That's what Anti-spirals fought against. "All stars are enemies," is line which he used to address other species in galaxy. On the other hand, in the last episode, we know that his drive was Nia... since her kidnapping kickstarted the second part... so it's pretty reasonable to state that after Kamina died, Nia took place as Simon's drive, motivation or whatever it's called. Yeah, yeah, damsel in distress plot device, love and all that. And so, through that little change, which I'm guessing is accidentally finding Nia's coffin, completely altered the outcome. Her presence changed his perspective and shaped him differently, and if I remember correctly, his last line was: "all stars are friends".

I didn't find the end all that great, but I appreciated that part of GL. Instead of spinning on, his drive died with Nia, and as most powerful spiral being he decided to go around instead of possibly realizing the predictions of Anti-spirals. I liked it. Minding the construction of GL, bigger, better, stronger than the previous, nicely incorporated into episode structure and waxed with motive of drilluuu, it reached the very top, and after that fall seems like most plausible resolution. I found it satisfying, but I understand why people dislike it.

On the other hand... Kill la Kill ending...

SPOILER: Show
Ehhh. It didn't really impress in any way. I can link you to discussions from the time ep 18 aired. It was pretty clear that there was nothing about it which could amaze, and there was no chance of it pulling Gurren Lagann. Ending was mostly formality, classic happy ending, but it was lovely in some ways. It trolled with deaths so many times it lost effect after a while, and after that time skip plot armor was rock solid as minor characters firmly established their roles in the story. We were pretty confident that if there would be any attempt at meaningful death it would be Satsuki/Senketsu/Gamagori. I can't imagine any other character making any emotional impact... I did like Nonon, but mostly because of her voice and design. But ehh, since Gamagori troll death in very episode somewhat broke the immersion, it was pretty clear who it would be by the time Ryuko launched in space. It was by no means bad, but it lacked the tension GL had. Gl established its tendency to kill characters very early, while KlK was mostly troll up to very end... I doubt I had any emotional investment in any of those. Probably yes if Simon or Satsuki died.

One more thing that really made my eyes roll was whenever Ryuko quoted Kamina on nonsensical things being their thing. I see not a single point in adding that... it happened all of a sudden and it wasn't nearly as convincing as in TTGL where it was something said in first episode, and actually helped GL establish itself. I minded it because I'd rage if KlK tried to pull off Gurren Lagann, and I'm glad it didn't. There was no need whatsoever to slash the identity of your show with another, and it wouldn't work in any way since it lacked in some aspects that made it worked for me in GL. Even PSG was its own thing, and I liked it because of that. Regardless, it didn't happen, and I ended up satisfied. I can't say I was Imashi'd since I could see it coming, and I can't see how it would apply on happy ending. I guess you have to play safe with new studio. :)

She isn't quoting Kamina. The (wakenowakanai) "UTTERLY INCOMPREHENSIBLE" talk was always there with Mako's family and is a direct remark to them and how Ryuuko has inherited their lifestyle. It also stands for Ryuuko's and Senketsu's nature and their relationship that is in direct contrast to the calculated oppressive world in form of her mother.

Additionaly you take it as meta commentary to sum up entire show.

I guess as long as we're running with endings, I liked TTGL's better than KLK's. They were both good, one of them just felt a little more right. It's a shitty way of explaining, I know, but it's the best I've got.

You know this is silly to say but has anyone seen the Naruto anime spin-off Rock Lee and His Ninja Pals? I found it to be absolutely delightful.

Rewatched Akira.

SPOILER: Show
Every time Kaori gets crushed, it just kills me. Especially when nobody seems to care or mention her at the end. She deserved better.

I need to get around to seeing the rest of that. Its brazen sexuality, when it occurs, is refreshing.

(from memory) "Hey, Sis, is she taking that whole thing up her ass?" "Yep. Right up her ass."

Nothing quite beats Mnemosyne for the inclusion of brazen borderline hentai in a non-hentai series though.

Okay so, going to lay some thoughts on the anime I´m watching:
SPOILER: Show

Black Bullet: Action and little girls. I´ll keep with it (there seem to be complaints about it skipping parts of the light novels and I noticed the fast pace but it doesn´t really bother me.)

Captain Earth: The first episodes were terrible, the protagonist is terrible, the action is bland(despite high budget). Only high point so far has been episode 5.

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: Boring, stupid, bland, ridiculous protagonist. And yet I haven´t dropped the show yet.

Seikoku No Dragonar: Very stupid fan-service show that I find entertaining for some reason.

Mushishi Second Season: Best show this season, a shame it must end eventually.

Nobunaga the Fool : Eh, I´ve gone this far, might as well finish it.

Gokukoku no Brynhildr
: I´m reading the manga, so I´ll probably drop it.

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii: I´m enjoying it, It´s a fun, simple show(and I kind of like these romantic older motherly woman/young immature boy relationships)

Mekakucity Actors: It´s okay.

Ping-Pong The Animation: I´m not really into sports anime, but I´m enjoying this one.
