I'm interested in hearing everybody's take on this.It also the first topic I've ever started.

I've watched a fair number of anime and have come across a decent amount of moments that I would consider "sad". but If I listed them all we would be here for a while, so here is a moment from something recent.

Major Katanagatari  SPOILER: Show

Image
Togame's death from Katanagatari. Why Nisio? Why did you take away my cheerio? No but seriously her death was tragic but unavoidable, it may even have been for the best at least from Shichika's pov. and yet I still feel immensely sorry for the cursed princess turned strategian. ( TДT)

It's hard for me to say.

The ending to Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket works really well I think, since the it tied everything in that little show together in such a great way. It's just plain sad on its own, but it's neat how it is being simultaneously faithful to to the Gundam series when it is at its best while also being iconoclastic toward the franchise as a whole.

SPOILER: Show
Bernie is dead and is never coming back, and by making Al the viewpoint character, a child who treats war like a damn spectacle, the audience too is implicated in the death that it causes.

Not sure I'd call that sad. The end of Texhnolyze, on the other hand...

That anime was determined to kill you by the inside with those last episodes. Hell, almost any ending looks positive when compared to Texhnolyze.

Grave of the Fireflies...
I've never so openly wept from a movie since, I believe.

Also, NGE:

SPOILER: Show

I was 10 when I first saw this.
10, and deeply head-over-heels for Rei at the time.
Broke my fucking heart, man.

Broke my fucking heart.

There are a few, but for now I'm going to echo Giji and go with Clannad: After Story, and this scene in particular:
SPOILER: Show
Image
"Sanae-san told me the only places I can cry are in the bathroom, and in daddy's arms."

I literally teared up just from looking up that picture.

I am with you on Clannad AS. There were few moments in anime that I was tearing up but never have I teared up enough for it to roll down my cheeks watching other shows but this...this was different.

SPOILER: Show
It wasn't particularly sad at first. But simply hearing a child asking her daddy if she can finally "let it out", saying that she'd been told not to cry unless she was in her daddy's arm...thinking about how she must've been holding back for years...was just too much! Of course her death was another cry moment. Her asking if it became night and all...ugh the lines for these moments are simply too sad.

^Ah Damn.....I did cry when I first saw that

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I've teared up on a few things. Some of my most recent moments came from the end of Chrono Crusade, Grave of Fireflies, and Emma Victorian Romance(Yes, it's an anime). I just watched Emma last night and literally gave myself a headache crying. I'm such a sap
Maybe if you shut up and stop over analyzing everything you just might get it........

Nausicaa (film), King Jihl's murder. You shouldn't have suffered throught that, princess ;_;

SPOILER: Show
Nausica's last stand of love and the ensuing requiem scene were pretty close too, but then she was revived by the Ohmu and it somehow ended well

Another scene (well, not exactly a scene) is Puella Magi Madoka Magika's final episode. Specifically with Homura and her dynamic with Madoka. After everything she went through, after all the sacrifice, all the effort and suffering... She's never going to see her friend again. Everything she did for the sake of the person she loved and cherised so much worked out to ensure Madoka would dissapear from the world and no one but Homura would even know she existed. And despite all that, she is so... Happy, so at peace in the final episode. For some reason, that made me a little sad, if happy at the same time.
