About the best I could come up with is that Rei's about to munch the last dumpling, which Shinji had his eye on...hence his expression of despair. As for Asuka and Gendo...er, she wanted it too, and he doesn't care.

My impression...it looked they were just survivors trying to..well, survive in that world..Shinji face is perfect..he doesnt know what to think now since his relation with Rei escalated in something twisted with the whole 3 impact..Gendo looks and behaves like he had received a cold bucket of water in his head..and we know why..Asuka well she had been agressive now with the whole attemp of strangling she may have become suspicious about Shinji attemps of assassination maybe something to do with Rei....And Shinji..why is he looking at Rei actions..when you see third impact in the front row and have an superior being..lilith Rei..close to you..it is natural that Shinji might want to know his reason for what happned..the why? why does he exist? where did humans come from?... etc..since Shinji doesnt know everyting like us
Asuka..angels they dont get along especialy with the eva eating incident.
