Reminds me how I just read that James Cameron will be filming not two, but three Avatar sequels simultaneously. Well, the three Lord of the Rings movies were filmed simultaneously, so I guess it's not unprecedented, but those weren't sequels like you were saying.

I like the pace the Rebuild movies are coming along. A longer timeframe somehow gives the series more weight, I think.

These last two next time previews look like the set up to a classic bait-and-switch to me. The fact that they both center around Asuka probably means this is her defining scene within the film. Most likely, we'll get some sort of Star Wars-like setup where there are multiple battles occurring at the same time, some on Earth, another in space and even possibly the moon.

Has there been any really good 2D animation presented in 3D? Seems like modern animation takes place in a virtual space that would maybe make 3D conversion "easy" in the same way that pure-CG stuff is "easy" to convert. Of course, cell-animated characters would have to have millions of dollars in 3D breast modelling conversion done.

Given the upset about early camrips of 2.0, I can totally see them cramming 3D in there as an anti-piracy measure.

Can't remember, nor can I find it. I could be remembering wrong, but it may have been one of the hundreds of tweets that ended up in the IRC channel or from one of those Japanese blogs that repost conversations on twitter (like room666).

View Original PostGendo'sPapa wrote:It is an absurd amount of time when the series was initially announced as being made & released all within the span of one year. It especially doesn't help that each film ends with a "Preview" of what's to come. A "preview" made for a film that clearly did not have a script yet but mostly was regulated to a series of ideas on index cards and a few storyboards. No 'Star Wars' or 'Indiana Jones' film ends with a "Next Time on ... This is gonna happen!"

Rebuild is not comparable to those other franchises. Those are all cases of the series being made on a film by film basis with no set number or overarching story in mind (and no Lucas did not have any fucking idea what he was doing with Star Wars, it was clearly made up as they went along). Rebuild was announced as 4 films with a set schedule planned. That set schedule is now over 4 years behind. Probably could be going on 5 to 6 years behind when all is said & done.

Now, without question the extra time is making Rebuild a more polished & superior product. I stand firmly behind the belief that Rebuild started as a quick sure way for Anno to drum up cash for the newly formed Studio Khara and it was only after 1.0 was knee deep in production that he saw what they could do with theatrical Evangelion & he what the series could be. The production changed then from a quick cash in piece of work - one that could have easily copied & pasted the animation like 1.0 does for 85% of it's runtime - to the new direction it's going after today.

The Rebuild production is rather hilarious because while I love the films, as a production it's clearly a mismanaged piece of work.

There's a difference between ADD - "Where's my Avengers 2! It's been two months since the first came out!" & a rationale "Hey, 3 years ago we were told this was Coming Soon and that A, B, & C were going to take place in the story."

P.S. As a fan of film you can't pick & choose. There were 19 years between Crusade & Kingdom of the Crystal Skull & three years between every film of the Star Wars prequels - that production time didn't make them any good.

"Crystal Skull" wasn't in production for 19 years just because that was the time in between installments. I wouldn't say a long production time always makes a film good, but it sure makes it likelier. Hollywood routinely finishes sets before scripts because they need them ready by a certain date. If you wanna throw out a scene, you can't because the damn set is already there. Madness...

It's kinda weird to see you bash Anno based on the original production schedule when you yourself acknowledge that the scope of this has since changed. Knowing that, how is it fair to hold them to a concept which no longer exists? It's the difference between building a mansion and building a skyscraper. A year between films for an edited-down trace job of NGE is reasonable. But it's not realistic for what Rebuild has become.

Anyway, no one has to worry about the release date anymore...

I saw this image in the Image Request Thread in the Eva Chit-Chat subforum. I'm kinda interested in what will happen if Rei doesn't take those pills in 3.0...I'm guessing they're some sort of drugs which suppress emotions.

Rei is genetically unstable thus the need for the pills, so it's less about emotional suppression and more about her health.

For once, I find myself agreeing with you. Don't know if that's a good or a bad thing.

That would be a far leap, she's been implied to just be physically frail (hence Dr. akagi's frequent examinations) which makes sense given that a) cloning isn't perfect b) she's essentially a mule. Angel and Human don't go well together.

Remember Occam's razor: If a person who was raised in a laboratory with a rather stone-faced person (Gendo) as her only parental figure with the constant knowledge that she's utterly expendable, which is, in itself, pretty much enough to leave someone emotionally stunted, don't assume that other factors are necessary.
Note that her behavior grew progressively closer to that of a normal teenagede girl (smiling, blushing and getting embarassed after compliment from attractive male, worrying about ppl, hesitating to shoot something with a classmate in it, trying to give advice to people, beginning an actual argument that Midsato had to break up, expressing gratitude, marching off without waiting for oders, questioning an order to retreat... etc) over the progress of the story/movies (untill episode 23, that is) with *no* indication that she has taken significantly less pills.
All suggest that she was that way from lack of emotional input/human interaction and *maybe* due to being alien-ish.

Also, she's not emotionless, she's a kuudere (somewhat icy on first glance, but actually quite nice) as early as ep 5, we see her smile *thrice* (to Gendo/his glasses), show a need for support (taking the glasses into the entry plug) relief (breathing out those bubbles with a sigh) annoyance/irritation (explicitly called such by the script) and get angry (*slap*)

Let me brandish my lovely little image that I specifically prepared for situations like these:
SPOILER: Show
Image

I had a better image with a close-up of that "bereft" expression, but I wanted to use as little rebuild as possible lest ppl accuse me that she's "all different" there.

To remove the last doubts, Anno himself has told her voice actress that she *has* emotions, but just has trouble realizing/expressing them for various reasons, one of his initial characterizations of her discribes her as "above everything else, a bitterly unhappy young girl..." unhappyness is an emotional state.

I'm quite curious as to how Kaworu will play out. From what I've seen in 2.22, he seems to be a completely different person. Far from the embodiment of "love." But that's only after a few seconds of footage, so I don't know. He could probably bring the Children together.

I'd also like to see how Asuka fares in 3.0.

Barney? The dinosaur? I don't get it. Anyway, I was sort of surprised they held over the same animation from the original series. I'd assumed the giddy school girl thing resulted from them not quite locking down Rei's character at the time -- she never displays such body language elsewhere (Episode 26 AU excepted).

Yeah...Barney the dinosaur. My point wasn't really the smile itself cause she looks goofy with it, but that Rei is not emotionless doll as the smile proves. The problem with original Rei was...and Anno freely admits it in an interview that's archived in the forums somewhere he admits he didn't have a strong connection to the character...and realized he flubbed her development in the aftermath of the episode Rei II. And...before anyone says it Asuka was always envisioned as a main character in the original series.

I suppose this should go here.

A few shots I made of the screening.

This seems like a shot of the vehicle that got Asuka into space. You can see between the two main shapes there's something in the middle resembling the shield thing on Unit 02's back seen at an angle.

This looks like something that launches itself at Asuka. Reminds me of a psycommu bit from Gundam. It appears after the shot of the strands of noodle arms after Asuka first starts shooting.

It'd be nice if he were similar to Manga Kaworu, if only for seeing kitties being crushed to death animated.
