The problem with that is, DBZ was made for 4:3. The cels and film always have more than you usually see, so Funi's new master gains stuff on the side but at the same time they crop off what was on top and bottom of the previous release. What they should have done is gone for full frame release that gives you as much of the film as possible. Pillarboxing is perfectly fine. I'd rather have that then cropping to make it 16:9.

According to the FUNimation representative at their panel at Anime Boston 2008, the only thing they crop was the opening sequence. They did not crop the episodes themselves.

I regards to the filtering, I dunno about that, I don't watch DBZ. :hyuga_hmm:

Bandai releases are good too though, especially their Haruhi and Gurren Lagann release.

But that's beside the point. Since Eva 1.11 is a digitally animated anyway, as well as widescreen, filtering and cropping openings are a non issue. In all likelyhood, FUNimationwill probably release it in Blu-ray as well as DVD.

Gendo'sPapa wrote:Anywho, I hope Funimation gets it right. I'm not sure if I'm missing out on any extras but I'm glad they rushed GURREN-LAGANN to DVD with no English dub cause after hearing those few clips on youtube I felt like throwing up.

That was Bandai Entertainment, not FUNimation.

Well, from the screenshot comparisons I've seen (which are sadly lost somewhere in the land of imageshack now), cropping was pretty much global. I'd love to find out that I'm wrong about at least some of my rage, but filtering was still cancer.

Either way, I'm sure I'll be happy with my Japanese 1.11 BD.

It's a good news, but it will be interesting only if the BR has a correct brightness level. If the quality's insane, but the picture's way too dark again, it would be useless.

Added a bit of info from: http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20090220/king.htm

"says that the digital anime won’t be directly transfered to DVD/BD, but that they’ll make new 35mm prints and create a High Definition telecine from the film."

Not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

If true, that is a bad thing. This is almost opposite of what Funi was doing. Instead of filtering old animation to look like the new, they'll crap up the new to look like the old. There is no point to it at all, and you're trying to pass the work off as something that it's not.

New computer assisted traditional animated is absolutely not a replacement for the good olde paint on cel shot on film. It's a whole new thing that has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Bad things happen when people don't understand that and try to force it to be like the old.

I'll still wait and see if they're trolling or not, I really hope they are. I would prefer a proper digital transfer from tasty way above HD master. I hope the fanboys in Japan create a massive shitstorm over this if it turns out bad.

Apparently, Gainax will keep re-releasing the movie until they reach version 1.99.

I just hope the 10 minutes of new footage are worth it.

I read it at a spanish forum. Now I saw that it's not mentioned in the english news articles, so it may be false.

I'm generally ignorant of this kind of thing so here goes...

Is there any significance to the number 1.11? Why didn't they call it 1.02?

i.e. Because the 1.11 'version number' is a greater difference to 1.01 than it was between the original and 1.01, does this mean the changes between this movie and 1.01 will be accordingly greater than those between 1.01 and the original?

Or did they just pick 1.11 because it sounds cool?

Because it's going to be released as Rebuild for Workgroups, of course.

But then they'll start to release REVAMP OF REBUILD OF EVANGELION. The all 3-D Super CG Hideaki Anno directed version.

Digital -> analog -> digital? :S

Someone theorized it was to get the "cinema feel", but come on...

:headbash:

Seriously, I'd been wondering how the hell they were going to "digitally remaster" a digital film. Ugh. :um-no:

I'm with this Sceleridosaurus guy:

They're, uh, working in binary + decimal point?

Also, amen to TMBounty_Hunter for mentioning Funimation's sins with DragonballZ. That "remastered widescreen" bullshit totally turned me off buying any of their DBZ releases anytime soon -- and I actually WOULD spend money on that show if I could get it in high quality fullscreen, uncut, with Japanese + quality subs option, 7-8 episodes a disc, slim-lined packaging...

I guess I'm the only one on the planet who likes the grainy film look of the final film (despite any insignificant-imo- detail lost) in comparison to the spit shiny trailer look. The image clarity and smoothness from the trailers just bugs me.

I expect to be mocked but after having projected my subbed version of the Eva 1.01 DVD on a screen 20 feet high and seen it in glorious gloriousness I like the look. But I've always been a filmmaker who loves shadows so I'm bias.
