I listened to his speech to a graduating college he made in 2005. He talked about when he was first diagnosed, he was told he had 3-6 months to live. He's lucky he made it this far.

Roger Williams, one of the biggest pianists of the 20th Century, recently died. He was 87.

SPOILER: Show
What? I said pianists, as in "those who play the piano"! What did you preverts think I said?

Geez. Bad month for computers and their architects.

Now I remember... He's one of the guys who created C, which then became one of the most powerful programming languages around.

I salute him.

Well, DAMN. I said I count Jobs' death as a loss and his achievements in early phases of computing age are great but ... Dennis Ritchie? Geez. Here's one of those guys whose work permeates quite literally everything anyone does in any computer, be it Windows, Linux or Mac. Or any of those pesky weird hobby projects. Or great deal of the embedded things. RIP, Ritchie.

SPOILER: Show
Even though it should be admitted his most influential contributions to computing were not free of problems and misgivings, either (then again, what ever is?). In his own, honest words:

"UNIX is very simple, it just needs a genius to understand its simplicity."
"C is quirky, flawed, and an enormous success."

Well, farewell Dennis. Even if your creation wasn't intended for widespread use, UNIX and C became two of the most important pieces in the history of computers.

For research purposes I use C every day. I'm probably going to code some Linux kernel modules by the first half of next year ( TERROR! It's not even ANSI-C 89 ).

Probably, if back in 1973 someone would have told Dennis that UNIX and C would still be in widespread use in 2011, he could have died then, by laughing!

I remember the thrill in university of being in a field whose pioneers were largely still living, and productive! And now that's starting to change. He laid out many of the principles that govern most of the computers we're typing on today.

We have a copy of K&R C that Ritchie signed when he spoke at CMU. It was one of our textbooks back then.

so I saw that postecard sent to postsecret where someone was crying over Jobs death and he or she wrote a sentence later "here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, blah blah, think different"

What the hell happened to this world?!?! Steve Jobs associated with the rebels, with the "alternative" ?!? Apple users are the anti mainstream force now?!

Something seriously DIED, and it wasn't Steve.

WTF is this now??

John McCarthy (the inventor of Lisp (and functional programming in general (and yes, my use of parentheses here is intentional))) has died...

Sure, he might be even more in the realm of "people known only by computer scientists" but really... pioneering high-level programming languages in 50's, here's another one who really changed the face of computing. RIP, John, even though not many people really know about your work.

^ At least he lived to the ripe old age of 84...

LISP.... Brought me back to those functional programming courses I took in university... Those were the days....

For Dennis Ritchie I think I still have a copy of the C programming language book somewhere.... I heard it is still being used as college textbooks but not sure if it is true...
