I'm trying to be positive and hope the structure survives. Still, the stained glass is either lost or completely damaged, not to mention the various artworks inside that are too big to move. I feel depressed. I can't even image how the locals and art historians must feel.

I was in Paris not that long ago and I was going through the pictures I took back then, but most of it is from the outside sculptures and architecture. Aside from the big stained glass rosaries, the organ, the graves and how dark everything looked, I can't seem to recall much about the inside, witch is now irritating me.

Regardless of how it turns out, I'm guessing the (re)constructions are going to last quite a few years.

Drone footage shows fire throughout the interior, so nothing much can be expected to survive in there. A recent report said that it was now thought that the walls and remaining towers will be saved. How much glass might survive is hard to imagine; not very much I suspect.

First pictures of the aftermath are less bad than expected, as it seems the inner (stone) roof shielded much of the interior from the flames. Also, the organ is not completely destroyed. Heavy smoke and water damage, though... :sniffle:

The West-end Cavaillé-Coll organ had essentially no water on it at all, and (according to one of the organists there) will need no more than comprehensive cleaning. The Chancel organ (which is not so old, but still well-regarded) was soaked by the water being used to prevent the choir-stalls below burning - water is anathema to precision moving wooden parts such as an organ is full of, so this will probably need complete mechanical rebuilding although the pipes are most likely fine.

The stone vaulting protecting the interior below was a major stroke of luck - this picture shows the interior as the fire was ending:

SPOILER: Show

It has been pointed out that dumping water from a helicopter, as suggested by President Trump, would have carried a major risk of collapsing the inner stone vaulting and thus causing hugely more damage.

Interestingly, I gather that during the fire at York Minster (in the UK) a couple of decades ago, because there was no stone vaulting there the fire service was able to collapse the burning roof so that it fell to ground-level and was more easily extinguished, meaning that in that case only one transept of the building was badly damaged.

It seems the older stained glass windows survived, it's the 19th century glass that is most damaged. Despite it being younger, I do hope they repair these younger ones has well, I'd hate to see them replaced with those abstract designs that pop up in some churches.

Reminding us that heat rises, the organ builders who maintain the grand organ in Notre Dame have had access to inspect the instrument, and have recovered a temperature recorder which shows that the temperature inside the instrument didn't go above 17°C during the fire!

Well, we should all be glad that the damage wasn't as bad as it could have been. What will be interesting is the debate on how to rebuild the cathedrial. Are they going to reconstruct the roof using wood beams (covered in fire-retardant chemicals of course) to showcase mediveal contruction techniques or will they use modern materials to further reduce the risk of fire. There is a case for both sides. In the meantime, the tourists still have Saint-Chapelle (on the other side of the same island as Notre Dame) or Sacre-Couer in Montmarre to go to.

^ Yeah, that vaulted ceiling was a god send and kept it from being so much worse. I'm sure they'll figure something out for the roof, I just hope they don't remake the spire too drastically, even if they have every right to, modern design architecture would be jarring against the rest of the building.

Oh bother...

Well that was a fucked up read, though after the revelations form Hollywood the past few years, not entirely unsurprising.
