Ornette wrote:The shark, that was some wild shit. It didn't taste bad, but it smelled really pungent, like cat piss, from dozens of cats, that's been sitting around for months. A couple of seconds after you eat it, you get this punch in the face of ammonia that comes out of your nose/mouth. I think I seriously caught a buzz off of it, at least temporarily enough to make me light headed.
Only one other person at the table was brave enough to try it.
Sounds like they fed you Greenland Shark. It's a deep water shark and is known for its high ammonia levels, and in fact they usually "air" those sharks out for 6 months to a year to rid them of most of the ammonia in order to make it edible. The restaurant you want to must have been a bit on the avant-garde side as the few cultures that harvest Greenland sharks usually just use them as food for dog sled teams.

I think I saw this on bizarre foods with Andrew Zimmerman. That dish dates back a few centuries and it's pretty interesting how they make it. Ornette is definitely the man cause I would not touch that stuff.
Maybe if you shut up and stop over analyzing everything you just might get it........

That's true of all sharks, actually. Sharks essentially urinate through their skin, so they all have an ammonia smell to a greater or lesser extent. Greenland sharks are a bit on the greater side, and have other toxin issues as well. It's not all that avant garde to eat 'em, though -- Hákarl is a traditional food in Iceland.

Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

Her name is Kitty. When I got her 8 or so years ago, I hadn't thought of a name for her. I always called her "Kitty" so I went with it.

"Poor son of a bitch"? I'd say "Lucky son of a bitch!" How often does a dog get a three-part name, anyway?

So since Saturday evening Toronto had a full night of freezing rain. This wasn't very nice
Past midnight on Saturday there were some noises and flashes outside. The trees weighed down with ice touched the high voltage lines. There was usually constant smouldering but occasionally arcing too, but sadly I missed the chance to take pics of those.
My building lost power around 3am Sunday.
I have no idea why the pano is so wonky but it's kinda funnier this way
Sunday around 7pm power was restored to the building, but not the traffic lights. The high voltage wires, still in contact with the trees also got power
Eventually a fire truck showed up. They took a look at it, noted something down and left with shit still on fire.
Monday comes, still no traffic lights.
Still gotta go shopping because even the Icepocalypse won't be as bad as doing it on Christmas day. Tons and tons of traffic lights not working. Lots of stores closed. Main roads are mostly clear but filled up with cars treating each intersecion as a 4-way stop. Some side roads still covered in ice or slush. Lots of uncleared fallen trees.
The fun part is that this ice isn't going anywhere any time soon. Today is below freezing. Tomorrow it gets even colder. High winds are coming so those weighed down trees and power lines that are still holding might not...
Something like 200,000 "Customers" still without power. "Customer" is a funny word because one building with like 100 apartments sometimes counts as just one "customer". Toronto Hydro just gave up promising any quick recovery for everyone. On Sunday they first said 48-72 hours. Then that some people might end up spending Christmas in the dark. Today they're saying some people may not have power until the weekend. Fun fun fun.

We'd have snowstorms and freezing rain in a lot of my Northeast winters. But I since I don't live there anymore I feel like I somewhat took for granted just how beautiful and scary it can be. Having to go to places on icy roads or in freezing rain (like, a storm suddenly happened) was always scary as hell of course. I was definitely thankful when I lived on the West Coast for 7 years, but then I'd have to deal with gloomy rainy winters.

Couple of photos of me with the boyfriend, from earlier this month. I wish we'd gotten better shots than this, but oh well.
